President’s Message
Cindy Kailly-Smith
Greetings everyone! It’s hard to believe we are in October already – where did summer go? Hopefully, you managed to find time to enjoy some of the nice weather we had. Your Vancouver Chapter board has been very busy over the summer months. In June, some of us attended the IIA National meeting in Victoria where Chapter leaders across Canada gathered and shared best practices. As well, during the summer we conducted our annual strategic planning session and built our program events for the year.
Some of our goals and objectives for this year include:
• Increasing Vancouver membership numbers while continuing to provide valuable membership services
• Delivering a local PD program that members want and achieves CPD requirements • Creating awareness/increasing the profile of IA profession • Continuing to explore social media as a communication tool
. The programs team has done an outstanding job on this year’s event calendar (see page 5). Our first event on IA skills was held in held in September and was a huge success. Please commit to support your local Chapter by planning to come out to one or more of these events - valuable training and networking opportunities await you!
In other news, following the successful membership vote last October, IIA Canada continues its transition towards an institute. The Transition Team has a mandate to ensure IIA Canada is prepared to seamlessly begin operations as an independent institute on January 1, 2013. One of the critical hurdles to this project is the commitment of membership (including dues) to IIA Canada during the selected period (July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012). Therefore upon renewal of your IIA membership, it is very important that you indicate you wish to join the Canadian Institute and have your membership dues committed to IIA Canada. On that note, I want to end by thanking you for your continued support of the Vancouver IIA Chapter. As always, if you have questions or feedback regarding the Chapter please contact me directly at [email protected]. Cindy Kailly-Smith, CMA, CIA, CRISC IIA Vancouver Chapter President

Programs News We would like to bring you up to date on some of the initiatives that the team currently has underway. In an effort to reduce program costs, the programs team started using the BCIT downtown campus last year to host workshops and seminars. Although we had some initial challenges in getting used to a new venue and caterer, it has been working fairly well and the cost is much lower than the hotels. Hosting most events at BCIT last year, although we still made a loss, we came closer to breakeven point than when we were using hotel venues. We will, however, continue to use hotels for networking events and the AGM. Last year, we also implemented our electronic registration system, GiftTool. This has been working well and has significantly reduced administration time for our volunteers. Please note that registrations will only be accepted through GiftTool for all events. Over the summer, we have been working to source experienced speakers and find topics that address members’ training needs and requirements. We are actively trying to address topics raised by members in response to the membership survey. We also worked with IIA Canada over the summer to plan the Fall Training program that will be offered by IIA Canada and hosted by the Chapter from November 15 to 18, 2011 at the Sheraton Wall Centre. The workshops and seminars included in the program address training needs requested by members in the membership survey. Check it out on our website and please support IIA Canada in their efforts to establish the Canadian Institute. As discussed at the AGM in May, the Chapter currently has a healthy cash position due to receiving our share of profits primarily from the 2010 Canadian National Conference which was hosted in Vancouver. Over the next few months, the Board will be setting a more suitable cash reserve level and developing a strategy to give back to the members by utilizing the excess reserves. From a Programs perspective this means that the Programs Team will be working on the following: • Offering more free seminars, workshops and networking events to members. Please note that free seminars and
workshops are available to members only and are restricted in numbers to ensure that trainers and facilitators can have interactive sessions and offer a valuable training experience. We understand that free training is popular and as such the programs team makes every effort to ensure all members have the same fair opportunity to register. No shows will be charged and members who have not registered through GiftTool but arrive at the event will not be permitted to attend. In addition, the Programs Team will not be managing a waiting list for cancellations; members who are unable to attend will be able to substitute another member for their registration. Since we are all volunteers, we appreciate your cooperation in assisting us with following these rules and keeping administration work to a minimum.
• Working on a reduced pricing model for paid events, which we expect will be in place for a year or two, while we use up reserves and reassess attendance and individual seminar break-even levels. (Pricing will then be returned to current levels when the reserves have been used up).
Please keep a lookout on our website for our updates and new initiatives. Programs Team

IIA Platinum Chapter Status
We thank you for helping the Vancouver IIA Chapter in attaining the “Platinum” Chapter achievement designation for the 3rd year in a row. In order to achieve this, the Chapter must have met or exceeded the IIA’s expectations and guidelines in the areas of administration, service to members, and service to the profession for a minimum of 10 chapter years. We are always calculating our Chapter Achievement Program points and we need to know when our members participate in any of the following activities: • Speaking on an internal audit topic at a meeting, seminar, or CPE class. (1 CAP point per 50 minutes)
• Submitting and/or publishing an article to a trade publication such as The Internal Auditor, CAE Bulletin, IIA
Educator, and other specialty newsletters. (5 to 20 CAP points)
• Writing exam questions for the CIA, CCSA, CFSA, or CGAP exams. (10 CAP points)
• Participating on a Quality Assessment Review team (non-compensated). (10 CAP points per review)
• Advocacy efforts to actively and publicly communicating to clearly articulate and reinforce internal auditing’s role, position, and value; so as to influence key stakeholders regarding the necessity of internal auditing for good governance and organizational success. (2-10 CAP points)
If you have participated in one or more of these activities, please e-mail the details to the Vice President, Elaine Dianko at [email protected]
