However, at All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysore only students with 50% aggregate marks in any three subjects among Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics in 10+2 are eligible to appear for the national-level qualifying examination.

Selecting the Right CollegeDr (Prof ) Venkataraja Aithal, HOD - Speech & Hearing, Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences says choosing the appropriate institute is important. “Studying in a medical college or institute affiliated to a hospital gives expo-sure to cases referred from departments like ENT, oncology, psychiatry and paediatrics.” According to him, studying at a medical college gives you a lot of hands-on experience. “For instance, laryngectomy cases get referred to us, where the larynx, which is responsible for voice functions is removed in case of laryngeal cancer,” he said.

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India financially supports AIISH which was set up in 1965. The institute grants a monthly scholarship of Rs 400 for the first ten months in a year until third year. The fourth year stipend is subject to the location of internship. The institute con-ducts two independent undergraduate programmess namely, BSc (Speech and Hearing) and Bachelor of Special Education BSEd (HI). The scholar-ship grant and duration is same for both the courses.

To meet the acute shortage of trained professionals in Speech and Audio therapy, SRM University recently started undergraduate course spanning four years accompanied with a year of internship. All India Institute of Medi-cal Sciences, Delhi and Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, also offer very good environment for study. See list of Top Institutes for BSc Audiology.

paediatrics, surgery and oncology departments. Undergraduates also work alongside to provide assistance at various specialised and early intervention centres and special schools. “The eventual focus is to help people of all ages and walks of life improve their communication skills,” shares young speech language therapist Gayathri Khandhije who works at an ‘early intervention centre’ for young children with hearing and speech-related issues.

Audiology practice may be leveraged on call basis where expertise is handed out to special schools where students tend to have speech-related problems. Likewise, an audiologist may serve as a consultant, but this can be an uphill ride as explained by private practitioner Sanjay Kumar, “It needs investment and contacts, which is tough for freshers,” says Sanjay.

Industrial career prospects abound in manufacturing and marketing segments specialising in hearing aids.
