    Cookie Lockhart:

Let me tell you about my worstauction I ever did.. that turnedinto the best one ever...

Im pregnant my wife of 45 days tells me(it was December, 1 1989 when we married).I couldnt have been happier, new wife, nowIm gonna be a dad life was good. About a

week later she got sick, really sick. On Feb-ruary 6, 1990, they told me she had inoper-able cancer. I lost her and the baby the nextday.

Needless to say I was devastated. I wonteven attempt to describe the hurt. For sev-eral years I tried to cope. The only times Ihad anything close to happy times is when

I would donate my time to help cancerpatients. I started raising money for sickkids. I went to Nashville auction schoolin 2004 and then via my auction schooleducation, the help I could then offer wasexpanded thru the bene t auctions I con -ducted. I must admit I got pretty good atraising money using the auction method.I probably conducted 100 auctions overthe years for different childrens groups. Iwas on the path to happiness once againusing of all things... the auction industry.

One particular group I helped was a can-cer research group. They were a groupof Scientists and business profession-

als that were committed to battling can-cer thru education. I thought... battlingcancer thru education sounded silly. Butonce I looked into it, the process wasvery unique. Imagine cancer patients be-ing able to access the best minds in theworld thru manuals if you will, that thesescientists wrote describing each particu-lar kind of cancer in plain understandableterms. These manuals described the lat-est treatments... medicines... clinical trialsaround the world that opened up doorsfor cancer patients that they had no clueof before. They actually GIVE THESE

    AWAY to cancer patients.

I was hooked. This sounded like my kindof program to get involved in. I pitchedthem ( the board members of this non

pro t ) an idea I had. Lets do an auctionto raise money for the program... but letsinvite all the scientists from their group todo a question and answer session with thecrowd before the auction. Imagine currentcancer patients actually being able to askthe best scientists in the world questionsabout the current research thats beingdone. How inspiring would that be for

cancer patients to have one on one timewith such important people.

Well, the board agreed, I started to plan. AsI worked on the project, it started to gainmomentum. I got calls from cancer patientsaround the country that were planning on

coming. I was very excited about helping somany people at one time. I rented the Hag-erstown Md Speedway for the event withmy own money. I rented tents, 500 chairs,I had food prepared for the many guests Iassumed were coming. I got several hotelsto donate rooms for our visiting scientists. Iwas donating money I really didnt have tomake this work, but I felt it was worth it if Icould help someone.

I advertised on Auctionzip, radio, & in thenewspaper.. The local TV News even did

a story on it the week before. I was over-whelmed with how big this grew from whenI had started it. The big day came... It was aSaturday morning. The scientists were therefrom across the country. The caterers hadthis big display of food out I had purchased. Ihad the donated auction items over in the ap-

propriate area. I had several hundred phonecalls between Wednesday and Friday frompeople that were coming... I actually had therental store ready to bring more tables andchairs if we needed them.

But we didnt... No one showed up. I checkedall my ads thinking something was wrong...the ads were right... NOT ONE SINGLE PER-SON SHOWED UP. I got physically sick, I ac-tually went behind a tent and openly wept atthe thought that no one showed up for this

incredible opportunity to meet and askquestions with all these cancer research-ers. Ive drawn 200 person crowds with aweeks notice doing bene t auctions andhere I plan this for 3 months and not oneperson shows up? I wiped the tears frommy eyes, and as I started to go back into

this monstrosity of a tent I rented to atleast thank the scientists for coming Isaw a car in the parking lot. ONE SINGLECAR. As I looked closer, there was some-one in the car leaning over the steeringwheel.

I approached the car and lightly tappedon the drivers window. A middle agedwoman whose hair was matted downfrom tears; she looked like she had beencrying for days. She rolled down her win-dow. I asked her if she was ok. She apolo-gized and slowly told me, through boutsof crying, that while driving by, she sawmy signs out on the street reading cancerconference in front of the race track. See-ing no one in the parking lot she assumedit was over and that she had missed it. I

asked her if she had cancer. She repliedthat while she didnt her husband did. Iasked her what kind. She responded withwhat I perceived was a 100 syllable word.I had her repeat it slowly so I could write itdown. She said the doctors gave her hus-band no hope and she just didnt knowwhat else to do. I begged her to stay justfor a few minutes so I could introduce herto my scientist friends who could maybepoint her in the right direction. She agreed.

I all but ran to that big beautiful tent andasked my scientist friend, have you everheard of this kind of cancer? I showed himthe notepad I had scribbled the name ofthis mans cancer. He looked at it and thenat me... Is this some kind of joke? heasked me. No sir, why? I replied (I point-

Story and information brought to you from, Cookie Lockhart

ed at her lone car in the parking lot) and told

him her story. He told me that less then 20people in the world had that kind of can-cer... and that the scientist in the big bowtie eating all my shrimp was trying to puttogether a FDA study of a medicine, he wasconvinced would help these people. Buthe needed ONE more patient for the study.Theres your one person over there I point-ed. Those scientists went over, introducedthemselves, and I watched as they sat inthat poor womans car for over 2 hours dis-cussing ways to help her husband.

I never believed in miracles. But how doessomeone who desperately needs some-thing nd exactly what they need; from theonly person on the planet (that scientist)that has the ability to help them, by chance?

Later as I thought about the days events,

What if a thousand people showed up?What if 2000 showed up like I wanted? That one woman would have been just an-other face lost in the crowd seeking some-thing she could never nd. While I wontuse this forum to preach. God knows whathes doing. You might think youve failed atthings. But give it time. Beautiful owersdont grow the day they are planted. Some-times we dont get to see our successes.Sometimes we only choose to see our fail-ures. Do your best, do what you can andhell handle the rest.

My auction brought in not one dollar thatday... But it was in fact my most success-ful auction Ive ever done. I love being anauctioneer.
