    THE AFRICAN UNION EXPRESSES DEEP CONCERN AT THE TENSION AT THE

    BORDER BETWEEN THE REPUBLIC OF SUDAN AND

    THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH SUDAN

    AddisAbaba, 15November 2011: TheChairpersonof theCommissionof theAfricanUnion(AU),Dr.JeanPing,haslearntwithgreatconcernofthefatalincidentthatoccurredintheYida

    Payam,

    Unity

    State

    of

    Southern

    Sudan,

    on

    10

    November

    2011.

    He

    has

    also

    been

    keenly

    following the statementsmade by both theGovernment of the Republic of Sudan and the

    Government of the Republic of South Sudan, relating to the situation prevailing along the

    northsouthborder.

    TheChairpersonoftheCommissionurgesbothGovernmentstoexerciseutmostrestraintand

    torefrainfromanyactthatmayfurtheraggravatethealreadytensesituationontheircommon

    border.

    TheChairpersonoftheCommissionwishestorecallthat,inthecommuniquissuedfollowing

    the inauguralStatevisitofPresidentSalvaKiirMayardittotheRepublicofSudan,on8and9

    October2011,

    both

    Governments

    reaffirmed

    their

    principled

    and

    commendable

    commitment

    tobuildingstrategicandpermanentgoodneighborly relations.To thatend, theyagreedthat

    neithercountrywouldpermitanyactofaggressionagainsttheotherandthatsecurityunitsin

    bothcountrieswouldinvestigateandtakeimmediateactionwithregardtoaccusationsthetwo

    countrieshavebeenlevelingagainsteachother.

    TheChairpersonoftheCommissionstronglyappealstothetwoGovernmentstoliveuptotheir

    commitmentasstatedinthatcommuniquandtoutilizemechanismssuchastheJointPolitical

    andSecurityMechanism(JPSM)topeacefullysettletheirdifferences,regardlessofthenature

    oftheproblemsthatmayarise.Inthisregard,itshouldbestressedthatonlybywayofgenuine

    cooperationand

    resorting

    to

    peaceful

    means

    in

    dealing

    with

    those

    problems,

    would

    Sudan

    and

    SouthSudanbe capableofbuilding twoviable States, in thebest interestof theirbrotherly

    peoples.

    TheChairpersonof theCommission reiteratesAUs resolve,especially through thecontinued

    engagementof theAfricanUnionHighLevel ImplementationPanel (AUHIP),whosemandate

    has recentlybeenrenewedbythePeaceandSecurityCouncil (PSC), toassisttheRepublicof

    SudanandtheRepublicofSouthSudantoaddressthevariouschallengestheyface.
