Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Is the department within the government of Canada that is responsible for developing and enforcing policies and programs in support of Canada's economic, ecological and scientific interests in oceans and inland waters.

Its also known as the DFO. ( Department of fisheries and oceans.)

DFO works with the Coast Guard to contain a sustainable use of Canada’s oceans.

Department Of Fisheries & Oceans

DFO is a national and international leader in marine safety and in the management of oceans and freshwater resources. Departmental activities take place on Canadian waters to help ensure the safe movement of people and goods. As a sustainable development department, DFO will take all perspectives to ensure Canada’s oceans and freshwater resources benefit this generation and those to come.

What The Fisheries Do..

Save lives. Work with security forces to ensure the safe and

secure use of Canada’s waterways. Help with ship-to-shore communication, navigation,

and clear passageways for safe water travel. Study, conserve and protect aquatic ecosystems. Conduct scientific research and related activities. Provide services to fishermen such as issuing

licences. Maintain a network of harbours. Provide high-quality hydrographic data, products and

services. Respond to ship-sourced oil spills Develop and promote the wise use of technology to

ensure the long-term health of Canada’s waters.

The budget for 2009, Fisheries and Oceans Canada provides almost $400 million for areas where we can have the most direct, beneficial impact on the Canadian economy.

The maritime provinces account for about 75% of Canada’s fish catch. In the Atlantic coast around 1,000 communities rely on the fishing industry. Any change in the fishery industry exerts a powerful effect on the communities that support it.

A First Nation of Prince Edward Island, pleaded guilty in Port Hood Provincial Court on April 21, 2010, to having fished snow crab gear inside the closed Crab Fishing Area in 2009. Fishery officers laid charges against the individual under Section 7 of the Aboriginal Communal Fishing Licences Regulations. Provincial Court Judge imposed a $4,000 fine.

Violations close to home..

Tracadie-Sheila (N.B.) The Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced on

Feb.4th, 2010 the sentence imposed on a New Brunswick lobster harvester for violating the lobster fishery regulations.

An individual of Baie Ste-Anne, pleaded guilty in Richibucto Provincial Court on January 19, 2010, to possession of 30 undersized lobsters. Provincial Court Judge imposed a $3,000 fine to the individual while prohibiting him from fishing the first two days of the 2010 lobster fishing season.

On September 14, 2009, while conducting an inspection of lobster catches at the wharf, fishery officers discovered the 30 undersized lobsters in his lobster catch.
