From the Editor
Welcome to the August edition of the Club Magazine, and thanks to Matt Burke and Emma Simmons for their Mini
Biographies. I hope that you will find many of the contents interesting, and will learn via the published latest
Committee Minutes, the latest news regarding the club
As usual, please let me know of any possible omissions or errors in the latest Road Rankings. I have had problems of
late with results firms omitting some club member’s club membership details. PBs data which is partly reliant on Power
of 10, can thus not be up to date.
Finally, as we enjoy the summer weather – seemingly just now and then, please note the fixtures for the East
Yorkshire and North Yorkshire cross country 2019-20 fixtures. I will be providing more information regarding the North
Yorkshire League before the end of the month, and asking about possible participation, as the League Secretary wants
time to register over 300 entrants.

Committee Meeting Minutes
Meeting held on July 25, 2019
Present: Melanie Padgham, David Field, Glenn Shelton, Harry Forkin, Dale Hepples, Ralph Broadley, Simon Valente, Rebecca Dent, Chris Wade, Shaun Tymon, Alan Whelan. Apologies for absence: Mick Thompson, Tony Tomaszewicz, Hiede Wilson Correspondence: An incident report had been submitted to UKA via the club’s Welfare Officer regarding the incident at a club handicap race this year. No response had yet been received by the committee. The club had been approached by the parents of a junior member requesting that no identifying publicity be issued regarding that member. The club’s chairman, welfare officer and press officer had been involved in discussions regarding this with the aim of ensuring compliance with the parents’ wishes and any relevant guidelines. Lyn Clegg had written to resign from her duties as the club’s Clubmark secretary. Simon Valente, as club secretary, was asked to write to Lyn to thank her for her services and to offer the opportunity for any concluding advice she may have to be provided. England Athletics had issued a national survey of clubs. Members should have received this. Simon Valente had written to England Athletics asking for confirmation of the club’s responsibilities regarding certain aspects of club events and activities. No reply had been received despite EA committing to provide one and numerous reminders made in communication with the organisation. Simon has now contacted EA’s insurers to seek clarification on the points raised. Matters arising from notes of last meeting: An application has been made to parkrun UK for a parkrun to be set up on Scarborough seafront. The club is not associated with this application. McCarthy Stone are no longer connected with sponsoring the Yorkshire Coast 10k and fun run. Finance report: The club treasurer submitted an up to date summary of the club’s finances. The issue of online banking being available to the club is still being pursued with the club’s bank. Social events: An evening bike ride is planned for August 9
th.
The 2019 Christmas meal has been booked.
-
Junior section issues: Chris Wade reported that there had been a disappointing turnout of junior members at track and field events. In view of this it is not felt to be feasible to provide coaches to these events and car sharing will be used as far as possible. McCains 10k and fun run: Melanie Padgham reported that organisation of the event was progressing well. The schools cup will no longer be awarded due to lack of interest among local schools. Club website: The new website is ready to release, following recent adjustments to the design. The correct content can then be brought together and loaded on to the site. Payment will be made to the web design company carrying out creation of the website. Facebook: The club’s Facebook page will be linked to the new website. The importance of the club having control of who posts on the Facebook page was discussed. A recent incident involving a possibly inappropriate post had been dealt with. Defibrillator: As per the decision made at the last committee meeting, the club will obtain a defibrillator to be available at its races. It could also be made available at other local races attended by members. A local supplier has been contacted for advice on price and training. Sirius has been approached regarding provision of funding, but the club is prepared to fund the purchase in the first instance. Proposed support group: The committee considered the establishing of a support group within the club to benefit members who may have been out of action and may be helped by being psychologically supported in returning. Additional runs and informal meeting for coffee etc. were envisaged. This had been suggested by a club member. This was agreed in principle; it was felt that the club should “own” this venture, with some terms of reference being drawn up, rather than it being left in the hands of one or two members to set up and run. Officials training: There is a need for additional trained track and field judges, timekeepers etc. Interest among members will be evaluated. New track: A meeting between club officials, England Athletics and Matt Hewison will be held in August regarding progressing the planned new track venture in Scarborough. Risk assessments: Copies of risk assessments drawn up by Dale Hepples and Alan Whelan for road and off-road activity were considered and agreed by the committee. These will be highlighted to run leaders and confirmed to UKA. Any Other Business: The club has received an enquiry regarding advising the organisers of the Cayton Fun Run about setting up their event. It was decided to refer the enquiry to the Scalby Fair committee who operate a similar event. A new Clubmark secretary will be required, who will also deputise for Jo Monty as welfare officer. Any unofficial club runs led by run leaders will be monitored by the club. David Field and Harry Forkin had attended the AGM of the Rugby Club. The siting of the club’s container on site is still under discussion. Date and location of next committee meeting: To be confirmed.

Mini Biographies
Matt Burke
Years as a runner/athlete: When I was younger I competed within Scarborough Athletic Club and was at Yorkshire Standard for both Javelin and Discus, as I got a bit older studying and life took over and I had a 10 year gap from the sport, when I saw that Jenna was getting things back together I figured it was time to get myself back into gear and have been competing since, slowly getting back to a good standard. Because of my profession I have always stayed very fit and strong however transferring that strength and speed back into athletics takes time! I now train with both Scarborough Athletic Club and City of York Athletic Club. I have always enjoyed running up to half marathon distance, I much prefer trail running to road running. Best performances: Running: 5km: 22.32 (Dalby Parkrun) 10km: 50.36 (McCains 10km) Half: 2:05 (No Ego Dalby Forest) Field Events: PB’s as a senior Javelin: 40.02m Discus: 26.33m Powerlifting PB’s: Bench Press: 132.5kg Squat: 187.5kg Deadlift: 202.5kg Favourite race: McCains 10km, it’s a stunning route and its fantastic to see so many people from our home town racing it, as long as there isn’t a headwind around the front because that can be killer! Favourite Stadium: Gateshead international, I had the chance of running in the same lane just weeks after Asafa Powell ran a 9.77 100m in 2006, as a 15-year-old lad that was a great memory. Favourite female athlete: Katarina Johnson-Thompson – what’s not to love, her energy for the sport is refreshing and a joy to watch. Favourite male athlete: Johannes Vetter - German Olympic Javelin thrower, for someone of his size and strength to be able to manipulate his body as he does for javelin is astonishing. The battles between him and Thomas Röhler are always great to watch.
-
Targets: Yorkshire Champion for Javelin moving onto North of England Championships Ambitions: Keep training and competing at a good standard in athletics and also return to Scarborough Weightlifting club in the off season to hopefully build the strength and speed required for a good season next year.
Emma Simmons
Years as a runner: I started running around 5 years ago after I started at a bootcamp, but really enjoyed the running side and so I went on to join SAC. My first running event was the Mcain’s 10k and I was hooked after this. Best performances: My best Marathon was achieved at London this year when I finished in 3:48 which means that I have again achieved my good for age and I hope that this will enable me to run London again in 2020. Favourite race: Having run London this year for the first time I can say that this was definitely my favourite race to date. It was a fantastic experience and the support from the crowds was amazing. It was great to be there with a number of other SAC member some who were also running the Marathon but also some who had come to offer support. Favourite athlete: My favourite athlete is the current Marathon world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge. I prefer running longer distances and find it amazing that he is able to run such a distance at that pace whilst looking so relaxed! Targets: My main target for this year is to attempt to gain a 10k Pb, which will be tough as this is my least favourite distance to run. I am hoping to gain a place at London again in 2020 and will be working towards trying to beat this years, time to gain a Pb at Marathon distance. Ambitions: My ambition is just to stay injury free and be able to enjoy running for as long as possible, a few more Pb’s along the way would be nice too.
-
Funniest moment: I took a fall during the Princess challenge, which is a lovely 17- mile trail run. I fell while running along a section on the cinder track, it was a very warm day and I hit the ground in a cloud of black dust. I crossed the finish line with a very black face and a number of people commented that I looked like I had been sweeping chimney’s.
