YorkshireYorkshire is ahistoric countyofNorthern Englandand the largest in theUnited Kingdom.Due to its great size in comparison to other English counties, functions have been undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject toperiodic reform. Throughout these changes, Yorkshire has continued to be recognised as a geographical territory andcultural region.

Within the borders of the historic county of Yorkshire are areas which are widely considered to be among the greenest in England, due to the vast stretches of unspoiled countryside in theYorkshire DalesandNorth York Moorsand to the open aspect of some of the major cities.Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed "God's Own County".

North Yorkshire was formed on 1 April 1974 as a result of theLocal Government Act 1972, and covers most of the lands of thehistoricNorth Riding, as well as the northern half of theWest Riding, the northern and eastern fringes of theEast RidingofYorkshireand the formercounty boroughofYork.York became aunitary authorityindependent of North Yorkshire on 1 April 1996,and at the same timeMiddlesbrough,Redcar and Clevelandand areas of Stockton-on-Tees south of the river became part of NorthYorkshirefor ceremonial purposes, having been part ofClevelandfrom 1974 to 1996.

Main attractions and activitesBolton AbbeyBolton Abbey is on the banks of the River Wharfe in acres of beautiful countryside. Captain Cook Memorial Museum(Whitby, North Yorkshire)Winner of the Gold Award 2013 for the best small visitor attraction in Visit England's Awards, this 17th Century house belonged to Cook's master, John Walker, and is where the young Cook and his fellow apprentices lodged. The house is now a museum celebrating Cook's years in Whitby and later career.

Castle Howard(Malton, North Yorkshire)Home to the Howard family for over 300 years, Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th-century residence set within 1,000 acres of breathtaking landscape.

National Railway Museum
