What does it mean to be aPioneer?
We are driven by a constant pursuit of excellence; we were eighty-seven minutes from a national championship last year. However, our postseason success, national rankings, All-American selections, and sold-out crowds tell only a small part of the story.
We are hard-working, goal-oriented, and pressure-tested. In the classroom and in competition, we showcase passion, character, grit, and mettle. We take pride in our college and in our city. We are leaders, ambassadors, and volunteers. We are champions.
Our experience is more than a game. Much more.

Feeling
“I’ll never forget that feeling. It was a night game, and the stadium was packed. Everyone was cheering and going crazy. The announcer called my name. I ran out of the tunnel onto the field. The lights were shining, and it was just loud. I was like, ‘I couldn’t have picked somewhere better. This is it for me. This is all I wanted.’”

BALANCE
“I had no intentions of playing college hockey. I wanted to bear down on academics. I wanted to do research. I wanted to prepare for graduate or medical school. The hockey coach contacted me, and started mentioning some of the things Utica athletes have achieved off the ice – presenting research at national conferences, competing for admission into the top medical schools and law schools. The balance between academics and athletics here is perfect.”

“They say there’s nothing like throwing a
no-hitter,and I’ll never forget being on the mound and sharing that moment
after the final out with my teammates.”

here.”Everyone is so supportive. It’s great
to look up in the stands and see so many other men’s and women’s
athletes – football players, hockey players, water polo players, lacrosse players. Everyone is there to support
each other because everyone wants Utica to succeed.”

“There’s no better place to play college hockey than the Aud. To step out onto the ice every night, in a big game atmosphere,
there are no words to describe it. Four years later, I still get that
same feeling as I had my first game.”

There’s a lot of pride when I put on every single jersey I wear.
“I’m a three-sport athlete. Each team is different in terms of the atmosphere and the experiences I share with my teammates, but what’s the same is the feeling I get when I look down and see Utica sewn across the front of my jersey. There’s a lot of pride when I put on every single jersey I wear.”

“The coaches here are really great. They’re always pushing you to succeed and achieve your goals – not only athletic goals. They’re making you a better athlete, but they’re driving you academically as well. I don’t remember a conversation with my coach where we didn’t talk about what’s going on in my classes.”

“We were in the Pioneer Pub watching the NCAA tournament selection show, hoping we’d hear our name called and we’d receive a bid. We were staring at the screen, waiting, and completely unaware of our surroundings. We were the last team called, and everyone jumps up and is screaming and crying. It was the most intense, most emotional moment probably in my entire life. When I calmed down and looked around I couldn’t believe how many professors and staff were there sharing the moment with us. Many of them had tears in their eyes too. And when I got to my next class after that, my classmates and professor all clapped for me when I walked into the room. The people here, they are not only supportive, but they’re involved and they really care about you.”

Where thecommunitycomes together
Utica College has some top notch facilities. In fact we are building an all new multisport complex with a full size track right now.
But that is just brick and mortar.
More importantly, these facilities are the places where 3,000 people scream in unison. The turf where teammates sweat together. The places where lifelong bonds are made.
