Wednesday 1st April 2015 The Townsville Identities Exhibition is a collaborative partnership between Artworks Kith & Kin and Dancenorth Community and Education Team. In September 2014 an Arts Festival of different creative and theatrical workshops was held at the School of Arts Building for the first time. The Festival was held during the week preceding Disability Action Week. One component of the Arts Festival was to invite some well-known Townsville Identities to sit for live drawings. This was the first time any of the participants had drawn using an easel and each sitting lasted for 20 to 30 minutes. Head on down to Perc Tucker and have a look at the amazing works from Artworks Kith & Kin Participants.

Nina has been on a short holiday to visit her mother in Ingham. On her return Nina has decided she would like to start Water Aerobics to increase her fitness. We will catch up with Nina on her progress and her holiday in the next issue of Konnect. Bradley and Tony have been attending Dance Works each week and are thoroughly enjoying socialising and keeping fit at the workshops. Brodie is on holiday in Brisbane visiting his family. Brodie often goes away on short holidays and enjoys sharing his experiences with Konnect. Lizzie has purchased a beautiful new couch and is making her unit look very homely.

+',5."!&+$ Lizzie would like to share and recommend a book called ”Lovely as Usual” written by author Joyce Higgins. Lizzie says Joyce is a family friend who she met at Boarding school. Lizzie’s sister has illustrated a children’s book called “The All Stars Orchestra and Chorus” Lizzie says “keep a look out for it and enjoy reading”.

This will give everyone the chance to experiment and experience new opportunities. Pictured below, Tahvy demonstrates how to play a Cajon, which is a drum that looks like a wooden box. Each side plays a different sound. Everyone participated and had fun.

In the summer heat, it’s important to stay hydrated. Our bodies are over two thirds water. Water is needed to transport all the nutrients, hormones and even wastes through our bodies, so it is important to avoid dehydration.

• Keep a large bottle of water handy to encourage you to drink water wherever and whenever

• Be sure to eat fruits and vegetables, which are a great sources of water, daily not only to stay hydrated, but to maintain optimum health

• Have a glass of water before each meal • After each trip to the restroom, drink a glass of water to replenish your fluids • Set reminders on your phone, watch or email to drink every hour • Add a slice of lemon, lime or mint to your water to give it some flavor

Some common symptoms of mild to moderate dehydration are given below (the severity will vary depending upon body size and the external temperature):

• Increased thirst • Dry, sticky mouth • Tiredness • Reduced concentration • Headache • Muscle tiredness • Decreased urine output • Dizziness or light headedness

This will promote Kith & Kin and our future under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The design we have chosen is modern and flows well with our aims and objectives of where we want to be in the future.

Sally shares her experience of meeting the Rotary club members. “On the 12th February 2015 I presented a short talk on Kith and Kin to the Rotary Club of Mundingburra Inc. I provided the members with a resource package containing information about All Abilities Support, Better Mental Health, Artworks and the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The Rotary Club was exceptionally welcoming and I had the opportunity to meet such a cross section of people that add such great value and perform so many inspirational projects in our community. I spoke of the dedicated people who established Kith and Kin in Townsville in 1981 and how the association has evolved and innovated to become a diverse service connecting people with the community and providing suitable and sustainable all abilities and better health support.

At the meeting I was welcomed by the team and was privy to experiencing how much fun the members have. During the meeting they fundraise and organise their Rotarians to volunteer their time to complete projects in the community”.

Information Sessions will be held at Kith & Kin for clients and families to access information on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Information packs will be given to all participants. You will get the opportunity to ask questions and find out as much as possible about what changes may occur under the new funding scheme. These sessions will commence in April this year and we will inform you of the dates and times available in the coming weeks. If you would like to do some research before these sessions commence, visit www.ndis.gov.au or visit our webpage and see what we can offer under the NDIS. http://kithandkin.com.au/ndis/ 4 )1/&2" Nearly 60,000 people with a mental Illness will benefit from the single biggest funding boost under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Hundreds of thousands of people suffering less severe mental problems that currently access government-funded services but don’t qualify for the NDIS are being assured their help will continue. The funding extension will ensure supports are maintained as the transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme continues across the country.

We would like to warmly welcome these new Directors to Kith & Kin and hope that their time on the Board is a rewarding one. Enquiries for the recent vacancies on the Board were overwhelming and the caliber of Directors demonstrates a keen interest from the Townsville Community to contribute to good causes and effectively run charities. It is also a good indicator that Kith & Kin’s good reputation in disabilities and mental health are slowly filtering out to the general community of Townsville.

##& "$"0/# ")&#0 The Kith and Kin office is also undergoing a revamp with fresh paint and new flooring to the back office. To accompany the fresh new look we have hung some fresh cream blinds to the middle office, which makes it look much brighter and opens up the room making it look larger and more spacious.
