MAGYAR BANDS INVADE AUSTRIA Vienna Government Orders Army Recruited to Full Numbers Under Peace Treaty. PLOT TO SET UP MONARCHY Attack Town of Wiener-Newatadt, Near Capital—Backed, It la Said, by German Reactionaries—Brlek Recruiting In Hungary. Berlin.—Magyar bands have advanc- ed from Burgeoland Into Austria prop- er and have poshed the Austrtea Re&cbswehr who opposed those taaci* to the Leltha bridge. I** •*•**• - w m i,i>lllll 1 7 oua well organised force*, which arc be- ing recruited at three points In Hun gary —Budapest, Hajmasker and Zala- Egerszeg. Wiener-Neustadt is about thirty miles south uf Vienna and only a few miles across the border of Bergen- land. The Hungarian government has an- nounced that At has called the class of 19X to the colors, as It is permitted to do under the peace treaty, to bring the army up to 35,0 X men. Evidence is abundant, however, that each day about 5X men not belonging to the of 1931 arc receiving arms and being headed for Kurgenland. Re- cruit* from Germany, particularly Ba- varia, are also plentiful. No doult now remains that the so- called bands are becoming a paid army with monarchist purposes, linked with the movement to Join Austria, or at least the Austrian Tyrol, to Germany. Republican Germany and Austria are beginning to see the danger, and while the Austrian government officially an- j uounces It is prepared to deal with any attempted monarchist coup, both Vicuna and Berlin are worried. Reactionary German leaders are busy in Austria, and from working un- der cover as the) have been doing for several months they have now been forced Into the open. Meetings of old front soldiers have lieeu called in Vi- enna amt the reactionaries have es- tablished headquarters at Innsbruck, which they expect to he the capital of a Tyrolean mountain stale. The monarchists, who are anxious to break the feeble Viennese Itepub Mean government us the first step to- ward re-establishing monarebs In Cen tral Eurie. h* lleve this is the r chance. The Republican Berlin gov- ernment, however, seeing the danger, has discouraged the Tyroleans In their demand to te freed from Vienna and united to their brother mountaineers in Bavaria. The publicity given to the monarch- ist plans In the lust few days has also disconcerted the monarchists to such an extetnt that the Bavarian Stuats Zeltung has felt culled upon to den> that the purpost f seeking the union of the Tyrol iuvarla is the res toration *t King .udwlg of Bavaria to the throne. Nevertheless, the hand of the Ger- man reactionary is seen in the whole affair. These German leaders see In Austria the possibility of success where they have failed In Germany. MAGYAR BANDSINVADE AUSTRIA

Vienna Government Orders ArmyRecruited to Full Numbers

Under Peace Treaty.

PLOT TO SET UP MONARCHY

Attack Town of Wiener-Newatadt,Near Capital—Backed, It la Said, by

German Reactionaries—BrlekRecruiting In Hungary.

Berlin.—Magyar bands have advanc-ed from Burgeoland Into Austria prop-er and have poshed the AustrteaRe&cbswehr who opposed those taaci*to the Leltha bridge. I** •*•**•

-wmi,i>lllll 1 7oua well organised force*, which arc be-ing recruited at three points In Hungary —Budapest, Hajmasker and Zala-Egerszeg.

Wiener-Neustadt is about thirty

miles south uf Vienna and only a fewmiles across the border of Bergen-land.

The Hungarian government has an-nounced that At has called the classof 19X to the colors, as It is permittedto do under the peace treaty, to bringthe army up to 35,0 X men. Evidenceis abundant, however, that each dayabout 5X men not belonging to the

of 1931 arc receiving arms andbeing headed for Kurgenland. Re-cruit* from Germany, particularly Ba-varia, are also plentiful.

No doult now remains that the so-called bands are becoming a paid armywith monarchist purposes, linked withthe movement to Join Austria, or atleast the Austrian Tyrol, to Germany.Republican Germany and Austria arebeginning to see the danger, and whilethe Austrian government officially an-

j uounces It is prepared to deal withany attempted monarchist coup, bothVicuna and Berlin are worried.

Reactionary German leaders arebusy in Austria, and from working un-

der cover as the) have been doing forseveral months they have now beenforced Into the open. Meetings of oldfront soldiers have lieeu called in Vi-enna amt the reactionaries have es-tablished headquarters at Innsbruck, which they expect to he the capital ofa Tyrolean mountain stale.

The monarchists, who are anxiousto break the feeble Viennese ItepubMean government us the first step to-ward re-establishing monarebs In Central Eurie. h* lleve this is the rchance. The Republican Berlin gov-ernment, however, seeing the danger, has discouraged the Tyroleans In theirdemand to te freed from Vienna andunited to their brother mountaineersin Bavaria.

The publicity given to the monarch-ist plans In the lust few days has alsodisconcerted the monarchists to suchan extetnt that the Bavarian StuatsZeltung has felt culled upon to den>that the purpost f seeking the unionof the Tyrol iuvarla is the restoration *t King .udwlg of Bavariato the throne.

Nevertheless, the hand of the Ger-man reactionary is seen in the wholeaffair. These German leaders see InAustria the possibility of success wherethey have failed In Germany. The at-tempt to force the reaction of the Ba-varian minority upon the industrialNorth German majority proved too am-bitious. but. the monarchists believethey can grind the smaller IndustrialLower Austria between tbe rnUlatwhesof the Tyrol and the Burgenlandbonds.

By appointing the Christian Social-ist, Herr Guertler. minister of finance, the Vienna government la trying topacify he country dh trlcta, the peo-ple of which are chiefly Christian So-cialists, but Herr Guertler lias an im-possible financial problem on hishands.

Aside from the industrial crisis, thegovernment has a drain It cannot pre-vent Every tenth (>ersou in Austriais on the state payroll. They are tleold bureaucracy w.dch used to be aleech on the whole empire, but nowhas only Austria to feed upon.

To cut the payroll la Impossible without stirring up trouble, but to go 6txpaying from an empty treasury makesthe recovery the \alue of the crow nalso Impossible.
