President’s Perspective … President’s Perspective … President’s Perspective … President’s Perspective …

2014 is history. Time to start making history in 2015! What is your aviation resolution? Fly more, look up at those that are flying less, finish a build or modification, start a build or modification, earn a ticket or learn to fly more precisely? What’s your goal? Mine is “all of the above”! EAA’s Ultralight Chapter #1 should be your resource for the stepping stones to your ultimate aviation goals. Please consider exploring the history and knowledge of your fellow Chapter members when questions arise or you reach a hard stop on your project or upgrade. Asking the Chapter through our various modes of contact may be your best first step in overcoming an obstacle and getting that answer, tip, or contact number you need to move forward. Give us a chance to help. We’ve already started out our new year with a kickoff Chapter 1 event. Yes, it was cold and rather unpleasant to be outside at this time of year but you can’t pass up an opportunity to get out and visit with fellow Chapter 1 members and friends, eat good food, and talk tall tales in a heated hanger, can you? We had a nice turnout with many 2015 membership renewals from both past members and new, 1st time joiners. Thanks for joining and renewing! I’d also like to thank Rob and Connie Thomas, James Hoeppner, Lee Taylor and Tom McCarthy for sponsoring this 2015 kickoff event. It’s no small task to set up, cook, feed, entertain and clean up for an event in your own hanger so THANK YOU ALL. Last but not least, THANK YOU! to everyone that brought a dish to pass or put some $$ in the donation jar. Your participation is very much appreciated.

The January general Chapter meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 10th. We will once again be meeting at the Hartford Municipal Airport pilot’s lounge at 10:00AM. I will have the coffee hot and the sweet rolls fresh for those that can attend. We will be setting goals for 2015 at this meeting amongst other aviation topics and your input is greatly appreciated. Stop in and let us know what you’d like to see our Chapter accomplish in the coming months. The Chapter event calendar will need some work along with commitments from event sponsors. If you’ve previously sponsored and annual event, please let me know if you’ll be sponsoring this coming year. I’ll need to pin down the dates and event details for posting on our on-line calendars and newsletters. If you are considering sponsoring a new Chapter 1 event at your local airport or private strip I’d like to know as soon as possible to help get it properly planned and insured. Help is just a question away if you’re not sure how to start the planning for a new event. We are here to assist from start to finish, just ask! I’ll keep the actual meeting agenda topics short so that we can sit back and watch EAA’s January Chapter Video Magazine on the big screen provided in the lounge. EAA puts a lot of effort into producing these informational videos and I feel that sharing the content with our membership is a positive way to stay connected with our primary support organization. I recently had to suffer through a major computer operating system crash (thanks Windows 8.1) and lost a lot of e-mail contacts and message content. If you didn’t get this message (haha) you’re one of my contacts that got deleted. I’m working with our membership Chairman to get everyone’s latest current contact info updated in my personal database. I’m also going to be saving it off of my home PC just to be safe if it decides to roll over and play dead again.

This month’s link of the month comes to us from AircraD Owner Online.

It shows a light aircraD callus a Foxbat landing on the flat deck

of a 280D mulGpurpose ship at sea.

If you’ve ever dreamed of your own carrier landings, this could be for you!

(Just kidding, don’t try this at home.)

The “carrier takeoff” is good for a laugh as well.

Let’s all count our blessings that we haven’t had to shovel and blow huge amounts of SNOW this winter season. I think we’re about half way through with winter and hope that Mother Nature is kind enough to keep the snowstorms centered around Minnesota instead of Wisconsin. That would be real nice... As for flying, there will be none done by myself until it’s pleasant enough to wear only one or two layers of clothes to stay warm up there. Open cockpit flying isn’t something I enjoy doing when the temps are in the teens. In my younger years I was much more enthusiastic about getting a flight in during the winter and would often push the hanger doors open at Aero Park and spend a half day prepping the Quicksilver and myself for a quick flight around

the snow covered patch. More often than not I’d get stuck in a snowbank, or something that should be an important mechanical moving part would fail or freeze on the way out to the “runway” and the day would be shot. I feel that I’m smarter now and can spend my time outside being productive in other ways than futile attempts to obtain frostbite at 200 feet. Spring is only a few short months away. I’ll just spend my time prepping for a great 2015 flying season. I hope you plan to join in the fun. See you all soon. Steve M. President

We received this letter, forwarded on by Bob Campbell and Scott Cameron at EAA. It is from Jensen Czernejewski, thanking our chapter for our sponsorship of the EAA Air Academy camp. Geri wanted to share it with the rest of the chapter.

Flying into EAA 2014 This year I was able to commute to EAA twice via the Fun Fly zone strip, otherwise known as the ultralight strip. I am fortunate enough that the fine folks at the Kolb booth welcomed me to tie my plane down and watch it as I volunteered. Of course, I checked the weather very closely on Thursday, and found only a 30% chance of scattered T-storms. Well, after all, this is Oshkosh, and I felt very uneasy as I saw Corey fly in after me, he is a well known storm attractor, as history will confirm. Sure enough, one after another wave of afternoon storms, one producing hail the size of marbles as I sat in the Kolb trailer watching. The storms cleared, and it looked like I had a tiny window to fly out only to find out that the fun fly zone had 2" of standing water on it , and I was without floats. I was able to find a friend with overnight accommodations, and flew out the next morning. Flying into AirVenture is always an adventure. Try it some time. Watch the YouTube video produced by EAA a few times, and it is very easy.

At home in the Kolb display area.

Return trip on Friday showing how much haze is in the air from the forest fires out west.
