We have selected two orCroup, three lines from letters

freshly received from pa-rents who have given German Syrupto their children in the emergenciesof Croup. You will credit these, because they come from good, sub-stantial people, happy in findingwhat so many families lack a med-icine containing no evil drug, whichmother can administer with con-fidence to the little ones in theirmost critical hours, safe and surethat it will carry them through.

The Queen's Guard Vanquished. By a Mule Team,

Yesterday evening, about 10o'clock, a small squad of the Queen'sguard wero drilling on King street, near Kawaiahao Seminary. A tramcar happened to come along andthreatened to scratch the sdldiers'backs. A citizen riding on thefront platform sung out "get out ofthe way." This roused the martialardor of Hawaii's gallant defendersand they rushed in front of themules, bringing them to a standstill.

The officer in charge drew a re-volver and pointed it at the citizenaforementioned, while two soldiersplanted their bayonets on the rightand the left, ready to spit him at theleast motion.

The intrepid citizen, " however, charged the driver to drive on,which he finally did, and the soldierssaw their prize escape.

The.episode nearly caused an ac-

cident, as the mules swerved vio-lently. The soldiers detained thecar for about five minutes, on whatpretext is not known, but probablyto enjoy the fruits of their valor.

"You had better look oat for yoarhand, sir, Tom is a pugilist" This ad-

vice was spoken by a gateman at theUnion depot, Cleveland, and was ad-

dressed to a benevolent looking oldgentleman who hod stooped down topet a large Maltese cat.

"Oh, he seems to like me," answeredthe gentleman. "I make it a rule to befriendly with all dumb animals, andfirmly believe that they appreciate kindtreat" But at this instant the cateuddenly rose up on his hind legs andstruck out simultaneously with hisbarbed forepaws, grasping one of theold gentleman's ungloved fingers be-

tween his teeth and giving it a sharpbite. Satisfied with the result of hisattack, wily Tom scampered away acrossthe tracks, and from the other side ofthe depot watched the old gentlemanbandage his bleeding hand with a hand-kerchief.

"That's an old trick of his," said thegateman to a reporter who was stand-ing near by. "lib will meander up tohis victim in a most innocent mannerand play about his feet. Nino out ofevery ten persons will take this bait andbe bitten by Tom. I do not believethat he uses his claws and teeth out ofugliness, but for sport. Notwithstandingall this, Tom is liked by every personworking in the depot. No matter howwell we become acquainted with him, however, he can never be trusted. Some time ago I flattered myself thatTom was my friend, but one day I wasawakened to the true nature of hisfriendship when I got a badly scratchedhand."

'Who owns him ?" asked the reporter.'That is a question open to discus-

sion," replied the gateman. "W. J.Akers, the proprietor of the diningrooiui claims hiin, as does also a ladyliving on Prospect street. The catcame to the depot several years ago,and Mr. Akers claimed him from thefirst. However, about a month afterliis coming the Prospect street ladyhappened to be at the depot one day,and when she espied the cat shescreamed in a ladylike manner, andclaimed that ho belonged to her andhad run away from home. We gal-lantly waived our claims of ownership, but Tom, while showing signs of recog-nition, would not go with the lady.

"lie is very intelligent, and knows toa minute the time of arrival of thetrains bearing milk. He is always givena large allowance of the milk, and itdisappears in a remarkably short spaceof time. He will not eat meat, butloves bananas, and will beg for thefruit at the lunch counter for hours ata time. Occasionally Tom jumps intoa baggage or mail car, and when itleaves the depot he remains on boardand we do not see him again until itreturns.

"On one occasion he was left by mis-take at the depot in Cincinnati, but

At this point Tom came purring upto the reporter and invited a caress. He seemed so gentle that the news-paper man stroked the fur on his back, but a moment later regretted it, andhas since been nursing a sore finger.Cleveland Leader.

To Avoid tho Jar.Every one knows that a sudden shock

or jar, as in leaping and jumping, is feltless if the person rises at the moment onhis toes. A naval officer and a friendwere in the vicinity of a mine whilesome blasting wa3 in progress. At themoment of the explosion the naval offi-cer went through a series of peculiargymnastics. His arms hung limp athis sides, his mouth was wide open, andhe stood on tiptoe.

"What is it? Are you hit by a stone?"asked the friend a trifle anxiously.

"No; just an old memory," repliedthe officer. "That was a part of mymanual of arms when I was on a man-of-w-ar

facing Vicksburg.""I don't understand," remarked his

friend."That is the way we used to stand

when we fired a mortar," replied theofficer. "It looked a bit curious atfirst to see forty or fifty men standingon their toes with their mouths wideopen. But wo were instructed to do it,and as it lessened the concussion causedby firing twenty-fiv- e pounds of gunpowder we fell into it as into any otherregulation, and thought no more of it.It did not seem ridiculous then, for itwas a part of the art of war." How Some English Parsons Are Paid."The Clergy List" puts down the

poorest living in the Church of Eng-land a3 that at Wainfleet, Lincolnshire, where, at St. Thomas' church, the par-son apparently receives the rcsgnlflcentstipend of one shilling and one pennythree farthings and a small fraction perweek for ministering to some 200 per-sons. Tho living of Molesworth is putdown at one and eleven pence perweek, and another in Breconshire isworth eight pounds per annum. Living Church.

, Trees That Make a Noise.A curiosity is known in the tropics as

the sand bark tree and also as the mon-key's dinner belL It has around, hardshelled fruit, about the size of an orange, which when ripe and dry bursts openwith a sharp noise like the report of apistol Its juice is poisonous. TheSouth American trumpet tree mightfurnish a band with musical instru-ments, inasmuch as its hollow bz-anch-

are utilized for horns and also for drums.'Washington Star. .
