Broughton Astley WI Recently, Brenda Featherstone gave a full on farmhouse cookery demonstration of an appetising meal; soup, cottage pie with lots of extra vegetables, two puddings and a ‘quick’ apple cake, all the time telling us about her own farm where she has cattle, sheep, chickens and alpacas. The alpacas have quaint characters and the antics Brenda retold were very amusing.
Next we had a seasonal and interesting talk by David Hanger on our iconic British Seaside Piers.
Our October speaker will be demonstrating ‘Patchwork Christmas Trees’ and our members will be making one with her guidance.
The November outing to see ‘Evita’ at the Concordia theatre is eagerly anticipated, as is their Christmas pantomime. We plan to visit the Stratford Christmas Market in December and the Emma Bridgewater factory in Stoke on Trent in the New Year.
We meet on the 2nd Tuesday monthly at 7.30pm in our Village Hall, guests are always welcome to attend a meeting to see if you would like to join our friendly group.

What’s Your Elephant Called?
I have recently rediscovered the tale of the blind men and an elephant. For those of you not familiar with it or, like me, in need of having your memory tickled a bit, the essence of the story is as follows:
A group of blind men hear about a strange animal known as an elephant coming to town and resolve to visit it to discover what one is. Being blind they can only learn about it through touching and feeling. When they get there they are told that they can all touch it at the same time, but they’re each directed to a different part.
When they come to share their experiences the first man, having touched its trunk, describes an elephant as ‘being like a thick snake’. The second as ‘a kind of fan’ because of touching its ear; the third (a leg) as ‘like a tree-trunk’; the fourth as ‘a wall’ (its side); the fifth (tail) ‘as a rope’ and the last as ‘that which is hard, smooth and like a spear’ after touching its tusk. Having shared their very different versions of what an elephant is they suspect each other of dishonesty and ultimately fight with one another.
The point of the story of course is how we fall out with each other (sometimes vehemently) whilst each claiming to be telling ‘the truth’ about something based upon our frequently very limited or historic knowledge and very personal (and therefore subjective) experiences. I have often experienced this after reading about a football match I had attended: was the reporter even at the same game?! (Of course he was... but in a different seat, with a different perspective and a different set of experiences informing what he liked and disliked about the game).
As a Clinical Hypnotherapist I often think that this is what happens within our own minds with the vast array of information we acquire and store from different perspectives (stages) of our lives. We process and store in our subconscious (via each of our senses) over 11 million bits of information every second, whilst only consciously processing around 40 bits in our conscious minds. This can result in huge internal conflicts as to what is or isn’t ‘true’ at any point in time and how we act upon that interpretation, whilst continuing to process vast amounts of new information! Dependent upon the extent of that conflict the result can be all sorts of psychosomatic illness (over 70% of all illness, mental and physical is) from mild to very serious.
If you think you would benefit from a review of your elephant and how all the parts fit together to make a more comfortable experience...

Winter Feet When the sun shines your feet are always on public display. You notice every little fault. The dodgy thick nail, the fungal nail(s), the corn or callus on top of your toes, the cracked heels and the gungy white mush in between your toes. Normally you would sort it out but if you haven't it doesn't matter now because they’re now hidden for the winter. Imagine if these problems were on your hands, not to worry, wearing gloves for the next six months will hide it. If I can’t see it neither can you. Only for the sun to come out and you’re back to square one.
Now is the best time to sort out any problems that will take time to amend. The fungal nail-six + months, Athlete’s foot-6-8 weeks, verruca-2-3 months, the damaged thick nail-6-8 months. However if you had it sorted now, March ‘looking good’, May-June, ‘perfect beach feet’. Most of these treatments are 30% me and 70% you. That is I kick start it all off with a full mot and service but most importantly give you professional advice and we work as a team 30%/70% to get it right, but people tend to hide it in their boots until a winter sun holiday or Easter hols, then sheer panic.
We’re off to Majorca/Mablethorpe tomorrow and my feet are a mess. David can you sort it in one go. Yes and no - a podiatrist’s goal is to get your feet as new not to hide all the faults for a week on the good ship lollipop. Once we reach this ‘as new’ goal which is easy, the aim from us both is to keep them like that. You do not have to come every week/month but learn what to do and act on it. So even if they don’t hurt, they’re not uncomfortable but look a sorry state in bare feet, then what’s stopping you.

Why Computer Repair Is Better Left To The Experts
When computers go wrong, people often turn to a friend or family member for help and we quite often hear customers say that they ‘know someone who knows about computers’. Think of it this way, though driving a car doesn’t mean you can fix one. Having a lot of cars doesn’t show that the owner knows what to do when one of those vehicles breaks down.
Computer repair is better left to experts - Some people turn to someone with all the latest technological gadgets. But consider the investment you’ve made in your computer. When a computer expert sets out to investigate the problem, they do so with utmost caution. Before doing anything, they’ll know to at least ask if there is a backup of your data, so then, in identifying and solving the problem, they know what is safe to try. Importantly, they also know what actions to avoid. The price of amateur fixes - Your family/friend might turn to the internet for help and sure, Google and YouTube will provide some answers, but context matters. Will your helpful friend know which answers are relevant to your situation or all the potential issues to consider? Trying different things can be dangerous if the approach isn’t suited to the problem. Ask any computer repair expert. They’ll have stories to tell about computers ‘fixed’ by well meaning amateurs who made the problem worse. They may even have lost data along the way. Why Professional repair is better - As with most jobs, computer experts draw upon specialized training and hands-on experience. They’re also up on the latest threats, technologies and solutions. This helps them to diagnose the problem more quickly because they can go in and fix the problem right away, because they’ve seen it before or read about the problem. Don’t trust just anyone with the health of your computer. Computer repair may look simple, but expert and experienced decision-making determines the best solution.

BONES & GROANS Stand up for your health
A recent study shows that many of us spend up to 12 hours a day sitting down. Add this to 7 hours sleeping and that equates to 19 hours of inactivity a day. Some articles have dubbed prolonged sitting ‘the new smoking’ with links to premature death! This may sound somewhat dramatic but those of us who spend more time sitting have a 112% greater risk of diabetes, a 27% higher risk of heart attacks and strokes, an increased waist circumference and higher cholesterol levels.
A lot of research has looked at the benefits of adjustable height/standing desks. There is debate as to whether they are as beneficial as first thought. Standing still for long periods isn’t the answer; movement seems to be the key. The British Journal of Sports Medicine has published the ideal formula: for every half hour of working in an office you should sit for 20 minutes, stand for 8 minutes and walk around and stretch for 2 minutes! This isn’t always possible but it does provide a basic guideline. Computer users who stand for an hour a day have less back pain and NASA research confirms an increase in bone and muscle density. Standing burns 20% more calories than sitting. Your metabolic rate slows by 90% after 30 minutes of sitting.
A useful tip is to ‘walk and talk’. Your mobile phone is mobile so get mobile with it. How about walking meetings? Your co-workers may appreciate this as well. Walk when you meet friends rather than sitting in a bar or coffee shop.
If you do experience upper or lower back pain from prolonged sitting you can be assessed and successfully treated by a Chartered Physiotherapist privately, there is no need for a doctor’s referral. She can tailor treatment methods to your individual problems and give you all relevant advice to prevent the problems recurring in the future.
To see a Chartered physiotherapist privately you do not need to be referred by your GP. Jo Tait is one of the Top 3 Physiotherapists in Leicester, please visit

Lutterworth Town Band The Band’s summer engagements ended with a well received performance at Winwick Fête on September 1st where many enjoyed fine weather and a wonderful day out.
In August a big surprise occurred for one member of the Band and his wife on the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Vice President and ex Solo Horn Player Eric Mewis and his wife Mary were preparing for their day of celebration when they unexpectedly heard the Band playing `Congratulations’ outside their home. Unknown to them, the Band had managed to get together 10 players and there were tears of joy as Eric and Mary realised what was going on. They then thoroughly enjoyed listening to some well chosen pieces of music such as, ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’, ‘Cavatina’ and ‘Wonderful World’. It was a great way to start their important day.
The Band’s autumn programme consisted of playing at two Harvest Festivals, one at South Wigston Methodist Church on September 22nd and the other at St Leonard’s Church, Willey on October 6th.
The Band’s details can be found at www.lutterworthtownband.com and enquiries emailed to [email protected] or by ringing Andrew Naylor, Engagements Secretary on 07841 651033.
Lutterworth and Villages Foodbank
Without your vital support of food and funds, we simply would not have been able to provide over 700, 3-day emergency food parcels since April to our clients in need. We have provided the equivalent of over 6,000 meals and I know that our clients join me in thanking you for your generosity.
Harvest-time is here!
This year we would like individuals, schools, churches and community groups to support us by donating a balanced 'Meal-in-a-bag' for an individual or family.
To create a balanced Meal-in-a-bag, simply donate:
Tinned meat or fish, tinned potatoes or a pack of rice, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit or a long life pudding.
Pop it all in a strong, reusable bag and drop it off at one of our collection points.
Vegetarian tinned meals, other non perishable, in-date foods plus essential household items such as toiletries and laundry products will be very gratefully received too.
If you are holding a Harvest celebration and asking for donations to our food bank, please let us know in advance so that our volunteers are prepared and we can let you know where to drop off your donation. Please email: [email protected]
Alternatively, you may prefer to make a vital financial donation towards our running costs. Check lutterworthvillages.foodbank.org.uk for more details.
Remember, if you or someone you know is in need of our help, please contact one of our many referral agencies to obtain their support and request a food bank voucher.
LU T T E RWO RT H TOW N S WO M E N S’ GU I L D Despite a summer of ever changing weather and challenges, members produced a bumper harvest table. £30 was raised from the sale of the produce. The committee ladies had made lovely fruit pies which were served to members with tea and coffee. A flower themed quiz took place during the evening which had our green fingered gardeners scratching their heads as it was anything but easy. The meeting ended with the raffle of a plant and a box of vegetables, a very enjoyable evening.
New members are always warmly welcomed, please take a look at our Facebook page or telephone 01455 554323 for more details.
Lutterworth Speakers Club Our new season is well under way with last year’s membership firmly in place and new members joining. We took part last month in our Area’s annual ‘Chatterbox’ competition. An all female team of Sue Hanger, Ruth Redmond and Emma Thompson took on this year’s theme ‘Triumph and Disaster’ and described the ups and downs of women’s underwear; an unusual take on a broad subject (for the result of the competition please see our website).
Ruth Redmond gave us an entertaining and humorous speech about a family holiday in Venice.
As a building surveyor she was fascinated by the construction of the city, but the beautiful architecture was lost on her teenage sons until one of them declared that he recognised some of the streets.
This was puzzling, because they had never visited before, until it transpired he knew them from a video game! Mercifully, in the real city there are no armed villains jumping out from random alleyways to shoot you.
Sue Hanger led a short Topics session inviting members to tell funny stories about family relatives, not easy at short notice but Eileen Fox rose to the
challenge, invited to talk about her Mum. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the
month, September to May. To see us in action come along to Karter’s Café, 20, Church Street, Lutterworth, 7.30-9.30pm.
Guests and visitors are most welcome. For more details ring Allan Rimmer on 01455 324495 or see our website LutterworthSpeakersClub.com

Blaby Bowls Having drawn a blank in both mens and womens county comps, August came with ample successes. Our Wednesday night league team topped the division 1 table and followed up by lifting the league cup against Countesthorpe. This was followed up by winning the Atkins Shield, Club Championship against Birstall by a big margin.
Before these successes our Monday and Tuesday league teams were very disappointing. The internal comps are reaching their final stages and so far, Lindsay Ford was 2 wood champion, Keith Smith the Over 70’s and Gary Toward and Alan Stephenson the men’s pairs. The presentation evening is Friday 25th October at 7pm in the club house.
The outdoor season concluded on 26th September with the annual Reds v Blues after which the usual Friday evening internal table skittles league commenced.
Leicestershire Speakers Food glorious food was the theme for our last meeting and this produced a superb range of impromptu speeches. Each member was invited to place two slips of paper in the hat on which was written an item associated with food, it could be an ingredient or a utensil. A speaker then selected a slip from the hat. The group as a whole were given 10 minutes to construct a speech.
The result was an eclectic mix of speeches, demonstrating a speaker’s knowledge and experience of different foods, their origins, how they are prepared etc. Nostalgia crept into a couple of speeches; jellies and children’s parties in the early fifties, when the catering was not as lavish as today. A question was asked if ‘Tupperware Parties’ were still in vogue in view of the opposition to the use of plastics. We heard how the growing popularity of Chinese cuisine was brought to the western palate by migrant workers. The star of the month was awarded to Jane Lindsley for her speech on vegetarianism.
The reviewer for the speeches was Sylvia Bosworth who gave a constructive and eloquent review. Needless to say, we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The Leicestershire Speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in public. We meet at 7.30pm on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at Blaby Drop in Centre. For more information ring Bev Capewell on 0116 277 0266 or visit our website www.leicspeakers.co.uk
We also provide entertainment and talks to other societies and groups.
