Kentucky Can: The 21st Century Campaign:
The $2.1 billion campaign — Kentucky Can: The 21st Century Campaign was publicly launched this
September. Specifically, the Kentucky Can campaign will focus on three major areas of support:
• Funding 2,100 UK LEADS and other scholarships to ensure that more Kentuckians have access to a
UK education and that they can graduate on time with reduced debt. The highly successful UK
LEADS program is a nationally heralded initiative to eliminate financial need as an impediment to
attending and graduating from the university.
• Endowing efforts — particularly between and among academic and research disciplines — that
focus on solving the state’s most pressing challenges. Kentucky, for example, is among the nation’s
leaders in opioid overdoses and deaths as well as many cancers, heart disease and diabetes.
• Growing the university’s endowment from about $1.5 billion to $2.1 billion in gifts, future
commitments and investments, as part of an effort to fund recruitment and retention of leading
scholars and continue to support development programs and initiatives that provide a foundation
for the work of faculty, staff and students.
UKHC is expected to raise 25-30% of the $2.1 goal. Since campaign counting began in FY13, The
Children’s Hospital has raised an average of $4,284,798; the hospital has raised an average of $1,625,563;
and the College of Medicine has raised an average of $13,234,920.

About the University of Kentucky
Founded in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, the University is one of the
state's two land-grant universities (the other being Kentucky State University). It has a broad range of
resources centered on a single campus in the heart of the Bluegrass. Its wide array of programs allows it to
excel in multidisciplinary studies and fosters an environment of cooperative engagement across all
colleges, programs and research endeavors. Because of the lives UK touches and teaches, it remains
anchored in its mission to Kentucky — to educate, innovate, heal and serve. To be sure, its complex, multi-
faceted mission looks different today in many ways than it did in 1865. However, its sense of responsibility
to its communities on campus and across the region is resolute. The mission has evolved and grown. The
vision of service to its Commonwealth and the world beyond remains the same. They remain its compass
— the soul of the University of Kentucky.

The institution comprises 16 colleges, a graduate school, 93 undergraduate programs, 99 master
programs, 66 doctoral programs and four professional programs. The University of Kentucky has multiple
libraries on campus. The largest is the William T. Young Library, a federal depository, hosting subjects
related to social sciences, humanities and life sciences collections.
Research at the University of Kentucky is a dynamic
enterprise encompassing traditional scholarship, the
humanities, healthcare and emerging fields and
technologies. UK’s research enterprise received
approximately $331.1 million research awards in
2017, resulting in $241 million in state taxes, 3,429
jobs across Kentucky and $511.3 million in statewide
production. With more than 50 research centers and
institutes, UK researchers are discovering new
knowledge, providing a rich training ground for
current students and the next generation of researchers, advancing the economic growth of the
Commonwealth of Kentucky and exploring art and creativity of diverse cultures.
The official nickname for the University of Kentucky's athletics teams is “Wildcats.” The Wildcat mascot
originated during the 1976-77 academic year at UK. Today, the Wildcat mascot also attends several
academic functions as well and generally serves as a friendly ambassador for the University. The University
of Kentucky adopted blue and white as its official colors in 1892.
In October 2015, UK’s Board of Trustees met to consider and endorse its 2015-2020 Strategic Plan with
five objectives and their related strategies and metrics for success. The plan has enhanced the University’s
work for the future.
