University of Kentucky Healthcare (UK HealthCare) is committed to the pillars of academic health care —

supports the organization’s education and research needs by offering cutting edge services on par with

the nation’s best providers.

UK HealthCare has once again been named the #1 hospital in Kentucky by U.S. News & World Report, and

Kentucky Can: The 21st Century Campaign:

The $2.1 billion campaign — Kentucky Can: The 21st Century Campaign was publicly launched this

September. Specifically, the Kentucky Can campaign will focus on three major areas of support:

• Funding 2,100 UK LEADS and other scholarships to ensure that more Kentuckians have access to a

UK education and that they can graduate on time with reduced debt. The highly successful UK

LEADS program is a nationally heralded initiative to eliminate financial need as an impediment to

attending and graduating from the university.

• Endowing efforts — particularly between and among academic and research disciplines — that

focus on solving the state’s most pressing challenges. Kentucky, for example, is among the nation’s

leaders in opioid overdoses and deaths as well as many cancers, heart disease and diabetes.

• Growing the university’s endowment from about $1.5 billion to $2.1 billion in gifts, future

commitments and investments, as part of an effort to fund recruitment and retention of leading

scholars and continue to support development programs and initiatives that provide a foundation

for the work of faculty, staff and students.

UKHC is expected to raise 25-30% of the $2.1 goal. Since campaign counting began in FY13, The

Children’s Hospital has raised an average of $4,284,798; the hospital has raised an average of $1,625,563;

and the College of Medicine has raised an average of $13,234,920.

About the University of Kentucky

Founded in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky, the University is one of the

state's two land-grant universities (the other being Kentucky State University). It has a broad range of

resources centered on a single campus in the heart of the Bluegrass. Its wide array of programs allows it to

excel in multidisciplinary studies and fosters an environment of cooperative engagement across all

colleges, programs and research endeavors. Because of the lives UK touches and teaches, it remains

anchored in its mission to Kentucky — to educate, innovate, heal and serve. To be sure, its complex, multi-

faceted mission looks different today in many ways than it did in 1865. However, its sense of responsibility

to its communities on campus and across the region is resolute. The mission has evolved and grown. The

vision of service to its Commonwealth and the world beyond remains the same. They remain its compass

— the soul of the University of Kentucky.

The institution comprises 16 colleges, a graduate school, 93 undergraduate programs, 99 master

programs, 66 doctoral programs and four professional programs. The University of Kentucky has multiple

libraries on campus. The largest is the William T. Young Library, a federal depository, hosting subjects

related to social sciences, humanities and life sciences collections.

Research at the University of Kentucky is a dynamic

enterprise encompassing traditional scholarship, the

humanities, healthcare and emerging fields and

technologies. UK’s research enterprise received

approximately $331.1 million research awards in

2017, resulting in $241 million in state taxes, 3,429

jobs across Kentucky and $511.3 million in statewide

production. With more than 50 research centers and

institutes, UK researchers are discovering new

knowledge, providing a rich training ground for

current students and the next generation of researchers, advancing the economic growth of the

Commonwealth of Kentucky and exploring art and creativity of diverse cultures.

The official nickname for the University of Kentucky's athletics teams is “Wildcats.” The Wildcat mascot

originated during the 1976-77 academic year at UK. Today, the Wildcat mascot also attends several

academic functions as well and generally serves as a friendly ambassador for the University. The University

of Kentucky adopted blue and white as its official colors in 1892.

In October 2015, UK’s Board of Trustees met to consider and endorse its 2015-2020 Strategic Plan with

five objectives and their related strategies and metrics for success. The plan has enhanced the University’s

work for the future.

University of Kentucky Healthcare:

University of Kentucky Healthcare (UK HealthCare) is made up of the hospitals and clinics of the University

of Kentucky. Its 9,000 people — physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals — all

are dedicated to providing the most advanced, most effective care available, not just in Kentucky but

anywhere. UK HealthCare physicians and other medical professionals are trained in the most sophisticated,

most up-to-the-minute medical techniques so that no Kentuckian, no matter how sick they are or how

rare their illness, needs to go far from home for the treatment they need.

UK HealthCare hosts a Level 1 trauma center,

ready every minute of every day to treat even

the most serious injuries when they come

through the door. In addition, a Level IV

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit cares for the

tiniest and sickest newborns, giving them a

chance not just to live, but to live normal,

productive, happy lives. Its nurses provide

care for every patient, every time that’s so

good it has received Magnet status, the

highest recognition available in the nursing

field. UK HealthCare’s educators in its six health-profession colleges teach the next generations of doctors,

nurses and other healthcare professionals, spreading the highest standards of care like ripples to the

future. UK HealthCare is a network of partnerships and outreach locations throughout the state, so that

world-class care is always close to home.

Knowing that research is the key to the future of medicine, UK HealthCare researchers are working every

day to find answers where there were no answers before. As an academic research institution, its

physicians as well as pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals are continuously pursuing the

next generation of cures, treatments, protocols and policies. Their discoveries have the potential to change

what’s medically possible within our lifetimes. At the same time, its educators and thought leaders in

health policy and delivery are transforming the healthcare landscape in Kentucky to provide the right care

in the right place for everyone in the state.

UK HealthCare is recognized for its world-class care:

• The UK Markey Cancer Center has earned designation by the National Cancer Institute — the most

prestigious designation possible. And because of that, UK HealthCare has access to new treatments

not yet generally available and to clinical trials most other hospitals do not.

• Since its inception in 2008, the UK Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center has been a leader in diabetes

prevention, education, research and comprehensive care.

• UK Ear, Nose & Throat, also known as ENT, addresses all facets of the medical and surgical care of

the ear, nose and throat region.

• UK Healthcare’s Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine specialists and fellowship-trained surgeons

are world-renowned for developing and implementing state-of-the-art techniques to diagnose and

treat bone and joint disorders.
