5. SCIENCE–A GOOD SERVANT BUT A BADMASTER

Science has given us thousands of wonderfulinventions. These inventions have made our lifecomfortable and easier. We are able to communicatebetter through instruments like telephones, mobiles, e-mails, faxes. We get hold of informationof various types within seconds through theinternet due to computers. We eat a variety of foodproduced in any part of the world. Ships, airplanes, rockets, have made distances shorter. Television, radio, satellites have made entertainment cheaper, faster and easier.

Science has no doubt brought us comfort, happinessand leisure at a fraction of the cost. But if scienceis used for evil purposes like making atom bombs, missiles, submarines, guns, bullets, it can lead toloss of thousands of lives. Several billion rupees ofworth of property also get destroyed in wars. Therefore, it is rightly said that if science is usedfor good purposes, it can be a good servant but if itis used for destructive purposes it will be a badmaster. So it is the duty of mankind to put scienceto its proper use.

5. CHILDREN SHOULD PARTICIPATE INREALITY SHOWS

Respected chairperson, members of the jury andmy worthy opponent. The topic for today’s debateis “Children should participate in reality shows”. I,Shashi Dhawan stand before you to speak againstthe motion. I am of the opinion that children shouldnot participiate in reality shows. Such shows arefake and are managed for the entertainment of theviewers. These shows do not really judge the skillor talent of the children. They rather make thechildren work very hard. The result is that childrenpay no attention to their studies. Often the childrenare given bad remarks if they fail to meet theperfection demanded by the show’s judges. Childrenwho fare poorly often break down, cryuncontrollably, and become emotionally upset. They also tend to view their opponents as theirenemies. This leads to development problems in thechildren, which is a bad sign.

I hope that I have been able to make my point clear.

Thank You.

5. PLEASURES WILL ALWAYS FOLLOWSORROWS

Honourable teachers and my dear friends. Thetopic of my speech is “Pleasures will always followsorrows”. The famous poet Shelley said once “Ifwinter comes can spring be far behind?”. Wintermeans sorrows and suffering. Spring means joysand pleasures. As spring follows winter season, sopleasures will always follow sorrows. Nobody iscondemned to sorrows forever. Nothing iseverlasting. Change is the law of nature. Weshould not lose heart. We should not have negativethoughts. We should face pain and sorrows bravely. We must not lose hope because there is always achance. We must wait with patience. A day willcome when success will smile on us.

5. UNIFORMS ARE A MUST FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN

Respected chairperson, members of the jury andmy worthy opponent. The topic for today’s debateis “Uniforms are a must for school children” and I,Ravi Kumar of class IVA stand before the house tospeak for the motion.I am of the opinion that school children need to wearuniforms. They are able to maintain discipline bydoing so. There is a uniformity in their presentation. This way there will no distinction between thechildren from the poorer strata of society and fromthe richer strata of society. They are simply equalin the schools. No more will the rich child look downupon the poor child because his clothes are cheap, out of fashion or poorly maintained. No child willfeel inferior as he lacks the fashionable clothes thata rich child could afford. Moreover school childrencan be readily identified based on the colour anddesign of their uniform. I am sure I have been ableto make my point clear.

Thank you.

5. MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINESHonourable teachers and my dear friends. Thetopic of my speech is “Make hay while the sun

shines”. It means that you must use opportunitieswhenever they come. You cannot delay the passageof time. You should not put off the favourableopportunity to do something else. Opportunitiesnever come again and again. So make use of itwhenever it comes, because once it gets out of yourhand, you will be left with nothing but regret andrepentence. Then there will be no use crying overthe lost opportunity. It is also true that onlymentally alert people can take advantage of theopportunities that arrive. Fools fail to avail theopportunity when it comes. They cannot reach thepeak of success in their life. So make the best useof opportunities when they come to you in life andachieve success.

Thank you

5. WHY WE SHOULD CONSERVE ELECTRICITYHonourable teachers and my dear friends. The topicof my speech is “Why we should conserveelectricity”. Electricity is very useful for us. Wecannot watch television, listen to music, or chargeour mobile phones without it. Our food would getspoiled if electricity is not available for therefrigerators. The roads would be dark if there wasno electricity to light the street lights. Our clotheswould remain dirty and smelly if the washingmachines did not work. Can we play video gameson our computer or operate the internet? No, wecan’t if there was no electricity. At night, if fans do

not work we cannot sleep well. In fact life would cometo a standstill. Indeed, it is correct to say thatelectricity is a big gift to mankind. We cannot remainwithout it. So let’s conserve it and not waste it.

Thank you

• Apply mosquito repellent creams on yourexposed skin areas.

• You can burn mosquito repellant mats/ coils asits smoke drives them away.

• Do not allow water to collect and stagnate inpools, pots and containers.

• Finally you need to spray insecticides to killthe mosquitoes in the room.

7. WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAYHonourable teachers and my dear friends. The topicof my speech is “Where there is a will, there’s away”. This proverb means that a man of willpowerand determination can do whatever he wants.Willpower can even move mountains. Due to thepower of will a man can have his way in everything. All the difficulties vanish before the force ofwillpower. Study of human civilization tells us thatgreat things have always been achieved by men ofwillpower. The biggest achievements in science, artsand literature are all due to the efforts of men ofwill who worked against heavy odds. Man’s progress

from chaos to order, from savagery to civilization isnothing but the story of his willpower versus thedangerous forces of nature. Willpower can be achievedby anyone of us by a continuous process of concentrationon proper objectives. Once willpower is acquired, itwill enable us to have our way in all things.
