What were Magazines original purposes?

Before the real advert of the internet, magazines served much greater purpose that they do now.Magazines are collections of articles and imagesTo find information or options about popular cultures, current events.Brief information about what is going on around the world.Commentaries of popular interest, also advertising different products.

What Technologies were used to make magazines?

Type used to have to be set up manually - individual letter in racks - then eventually it became cast - now it is done by computer and everything including images

It used to be done by a compositor, or page makeup guy, the type face was laid out and blocked together. It was like a hot metal... They called it print press:They wrote letter on a paper one by one and they pressed it to an other paper it was something like a stamp kind of a technology.

• There are different kinds of content to put on magazines depending of what target audience/topic it is for.

What materials (ink/paper/binding) were used to make magazines?

• Ink - mostly black and white, as getting modern started adding more colour -make the letters look more classic (sans serif)

• Paper – as a newspaper/ typical paper (not glossy)

Around the 18th Century

1731 – Gentlemen's Club 1st MODERN MAG

1739 – The Scots Magazine

1770 – The Lady’s Magazine

1732 – The London’s Magazine

Most magazines started being published in the 18th Century.

Magazines were invented to spread and give information to specific target audience weekly, daily or monthly.

• They are entertaining and informative

• Great for casual readers who are looking for a pleasant way to pass the time while being entertained and picking up a useful information.

• Magazines are invented to interest every age group, special interest group, and even many clubs and organizations.

- One of the first popular magazines that was the Gentlemen’s Magazine.

- The Gentleman's Magazine, first published in 1731, in London, is considered to have been the first general-interest magazine.

Why they was invented at this time 1700- 1800

• During the late 1800s improvements to magazines came about through the process of better printing techniques. In 1870, printers experimented with better uses of colour.

•The history of the magazine dates all the way back to the 1700s

• Only the rich could afford to purchase magazines and only the few educated people of the time had the skills to read them.

- This magazine was first published in 1739

- Although multiple changes in ownership and the gaps in publication totalling over 90 years weaken that claim.

• Magazine ads have always been more about image than response.

• The branding message ads of today follow a consistent theme in trying to match the qualities of a product into how this fits into the quality of our lives.
