Dystopian NarrativesIn The Great Gatsby there is a dystopian narrative as three characters die, including the main character (Gatsby). The guy who shots the main character kills himself after. This shows that the bad guy wins as he gets his revenge and kills Gatsby.

NostalgiaThe Great Gatsby was originally a book but was then made into a film in 1974. But it was then remade into a modern film in 2013.

The Great Gatsby is about the American Dream, this was a popular theme for films, as its what everyone wanted. Many films were based on the American Dream therefore films in this time period were remakes as they all had similar morals.

Non-linear Narrative

Within The Great Gatsby the narrative jumps between two scenes, past and present.

Nick is the narrator and the film jumps between him being at a sanatorium and his past memories with Gatsby.

High Art/CultureThe Great Gatsby is seen to have high culture due to its social, political, economical and intellectual elite. It is based in the 1920’s with a theme of the American Dream which meant these elements are important during this era.

Intertexuality: PasticheThe Great Gatsby is a pastiche as it is not only a modern remake of the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby but also a remake of the book. It imitates the work of the previous film with changes, however it does not mock like a parody does but is respectful.
