DoorwaysWhen an article appears about some fabulous home, the one element that is almost never mentioned is the doors. That’s because if the doors are aesthetically right, they will be a seamless part of the interior landscape. And if the doors are technically right, the people who live in that space probably won’t give them a second thought either.

But if the doors haven’t received the attention they deserve, two things can happen. First, the interiors won’t live up to their full visual potential and, second, the doors may not do what they are supposed to do: function properly.

M AY 2 010 A S P 1 R E M AG A Z I N E 1 5

Page 18: ASPIRE Metro | 2010 May

A modest home can have 14 or 15 doors; a large home can have as many as 120 doors. The greater the number of doors, the greater the potential for variety and the greater the potential for error. So during construction or renovation, how are the countless decisions about style, finish, hardware, privacy needs and more made? And how do you keep track of them all?

In the words of Ken Goren, president of Hardware Designs, a company whose high-end offerings include doors and their accompanying hardware, you need a “take charge” professional interior designer.

“Doors should be selected early in the construction process,” says Rona Spiegel, ASID, of Lifestyle Interior Designs, “so even at this very early stage, the designer should be involved. The homeowner may not have thought about décor yet; it’s the designer’s job to do that and to help make the right decisions.”

“For example,” continues Spiegel, “there are different types of doors. Assembled doors are solid but pieced together with rails, styles and panels. This gives more stability than a single flat door with applied molding. And there are endless options for materials and finishes. The interior designer should also be involved in door selection and trim selection — casings and baseboards should be compatible with the door style and have the correct proportions.”

“A door schedule,” says Marilee Schempp, ASID, “is critical. It’s essentially a spreadsheet that defines all the doors on a job, including size, type, location and special requirements. Everything needs to be listed and numbered so that when doors and hardware come in, there are no questions as to location and what goes with what.”

“The architect often creates the door schedule,” explains Diane Boyer, ASID, “but for all sorts of reasons — sometimes budgetary — the clients may limit what they pay the architect to do. If the plans come to the interior designer without many interior details, we end up developing the door schedule.”

There are decisions to be made so that the appropriate items end up on the door schedule.

One decision is whether you are using new doors or — in the case of a renovation — existing doors. “Existing doors make for tougher decisions about hardware,” says Goren, who has a wealth of experience assisting architects and interior designers in developing door schedules. “Holes have already been drilled for door knobs, hinges, etc. You need to know exactly what you are replacing — and if they were correct to begin with. Even something as simple as hinges present challenges. You need to know their size, shape and whether they have square or round corners so that what is selected will work within the existing restraints.”

You also need to know if it is an active door or a dummy door, one that just pulls open, such as the door on a non-walk-in storage closet. In the case of a dummy door, the knobs, levers and backplates are purely decorative and don’t turn or operate a latch. What holds the door closed is a piece of hardware called a ball latch or a roller latch.

If it’s an active door, you can choose between a passage set and a privacy set. A passage set has a knob or lever on both sides that actually works, engaging and disengaging the latch and the strike plate on the door jamb to receive the latch when the door is closed. A privacy set is typically used in a bathroom, bedroom or office. There are two choices. One option is a button that is pushed and blocks the latch from moving from the outside. When the inside lever or knob is turned, the button pops out. For emergencies, there is a hole or slot on the outside so you can get in with an implement. The second option is a passage set with a privacy bolt that is mortised into the door above or below the knob. There is a release area on the other side that can be disengaged in an emergency.

Design decisions are influenced by the physical properties of the door — or the physical properties of the space. In planning a space, it’s important to factor in which way the door swings. This is the “hand” and it could be right or left, in or out. “The door should swing in to a wall,” Boyer cautions. “And which way it swings will determine what side the hinges are on.”

“As an interior designer,” she says, “one of my jobs is to determine the styling of the hardware, including the appropriate look and the finish. Finishes can be split — such as brass on one side of the door and chrome on the other. Often the same hardware is not used throughout the house . . . sometimes for aesthetic reasons, sometimes because of budget. For example, the really special hardware might be used on the first floor, the main hallway on the second floor and the master bedroom suite; the next best hardware might be used for the secondary bedrooms; and, finally, a third level of hardware for the basement. And children’s bedrooms might have an entirely different look.”

Then there’s the question of what type of handle. In today’s world of universal design, levers are becoming an increasing popular choice. “For door knobs, the door’s hand doesn’t matter,” says Goren, “but for a lever, the curve of the lever has to match the hand of the door. If it curves in the wrong direction, it will be difficult, if not impossible, to open the door.”

Less expensive doors usually come with holes predrilled for the hardware. This will limit your choice. Some doors — and all custom doors — can be ordered without predrilled holes, an option Goren highly recommends. “This way,” he says, “your choice of hardware is virtually unlimited and the holes can be drilled on site to exactly match the hardware.”

Even something as seemingly mundane as hinges is part of the door schedule. “The number and size can be contingent on the weight and thickness of the door. It’s also critical that the hinges match the rest of the hardware … a fact that the lay person often forgets,” Schempp warns. “Spacing can be critical, too,” echoes Goren. “Tall or heavy doors need four hinges, rather than the standard three. The first two are installed fairly close together at the top, the third hinge is centered and the fourth is near the bottom. This keeps the door from sagging. If the door drags on the carpet after a year, it’s because there were either too few hinges or they were improperly spaced.”

All three interior designers stress the importance of ordering all the hardware from one source, one like Hardware Design that will work with the designer to develop the door schedule and will actually go to the job site to make sure everything is properly installed. Great teamwork is the doorway to success.

To understand Jeff Silna and his penchant for collecting toys, you might first consider his pink carpet.

When Jeff and his wife, Christine, were house shopping back in 2004, a sheepish Realtor was nearly ashamed to show the huge downstairs rec room. The bubble-gum-colored carpet, she apologized, can be changed, ripped up, tossed out. Jeff and Christine politely nodded, then made eye contact when the Realtor’s back was turned.

They each knew it would be perfect – a perfect match with Jeff’s 1958 Seeburg stereo juke box and, more importantly, a perfect backdrop for the thousands of toys, games and play things that make up his museum-like collection.

And so, just weeks later, Jeff and Christine moved from their 5,000-square-foot home to the new 10,000-square-foot residence. A lot of couples would be joking when they explained, “We needed room for the toys.” In this case, it happens to be true.

Silna was born and raised in northern New Jersey. For as far back as he can recall, he loved toys. He loved them so much that he’d play with them, then carefully put them back in their boxes and store them away until the next time. He patronized Davis’s store on Cedar Lane in Teaneck. He dreamed of owning a toy emporium.

As a kid, Silna had lots of toys, but when he went away to college, his folks sold the house and the toys went, too. It was in the late ’70s that Silna ventured into a store called Fun on MacDougal Street in Manhattan. He picked up a couple of tin character toys. Soon after, he says, “I found out there were such things as toy shows.” The toy collector was back in action.

The timing of his toy re-awakening is significant, Silna will tell you. It was just before 1980. Just before Toys-R-Us. The mom-and-pop era of toy stores was still going strong. Wholesalers made a living supplying toys to local retailers who were personally invested in the toy industry and who knew the market and the merchandise.

When the world of independently owned toy shops began to unravel, the moms- and-pops closed down and sold big quantities of hand-picked toys en masse. It was a good time to become a collector and Jeff Silna did. Silna, now 52, speaks fondly of wholesalers like Fred Rosenberg of Fredro Sales in Patterson. Rosenberg was suspicious of Silna at first, until it was discovered that Rosenberg knew Silna’s grandfather, Harry. Then a relationship blossomed as, every week, Silna would buy armloads of old-stock toys from Fredro Sales. It was a place, says Silna, “the size of a football field with shelves that went to the sky.”

In this way, Silna began to build a collection of toys that turned back the clock.

But don’t get the idea that this is child’s play gone to an extreme. In very many ways, Silna’s unflagging interest in toys has become an investment of some note. Wham-O Super Stuff (a sugary substance in something like a coleslaw container) which sold for about a buck-forty years ago is now worth $75 if it’s still sealed and in its packaging. A Mr. Kelly’s Car Wash which still works and is in the vintage packaging is worth about $800. Silna’s tin Superman tank with its Superman figurine is worth about $4,000. And then there’s the Flintstones Armadillo Paddy Wagon (with Fred and Barney on their way to the clink) still in its original package and store display. That would fetch about $5,000 on the collector’s market. Silna has them all.

But that’s the high-end stuff. There’s lots more that is just plain fun – valuable, but fun.

Silna’s got Gumby and Pokey figurines, Beany and Cecil play sets, the easy Bake oven in its original box, a Jetson’s chalk board, Silly Putty, Slinky, a whole line-up of Paul Winchell’s Jerry Mahoney dummies.

He’s got whistles, batons, Kenner’s Freeze Queen Dairy Stand, skateboards, Punch & Judy puppets, a Doctor Kildare young Doctor medical kit and a De Luxe Dream Kitchen Complete Set of 176 Pieces – the kind Mom could only buy in the grocery store by “placing a deposit now” on the big purchase price of $11.88. Then there are the collectible toy cars, cases of them. Silna’s collection of Motorific autos is so extensive, he’s known as the King of Motorific.

Toys line the walls, fill the shelves and occupy the counter space of the rec room bar. An inside door leads to a labyrinthine toy archive where library-like stacks house toys in their own boxes or in labeled cartons. When Silna lifts the garage doors, there are more shelves and more toys along with the family vehicles. In town, there are toys in warehouse storage.

It’s not simply toys that Silna collects, of even higher importance and greater value is their packaging. An unopened toy is worth lots more on the vintage toy market than one that’s been opened – though Silna will sometimes break the seal ... just to see. Beyond that, there are the original toy displays and marketing materials. Among Silna’s prized possessions is a 1960’s-era candy display with Juju Beans, Dentyne gum, lifesavers and the gamut of old-style candy, unopened, in their original wrappers and in their original state of display. Akin to that is a pharmacy-type of display, with red-and-white Brylcreem boxed tubes still intact. One giddy marketing device is a sunglasses display: Marlo Thomas “That Girl” shades, plastic, round and in every color of the rainbow.

It is these advertisements and displays that are the heart of Silna’s collection. The toys are wonderful and whimsical, but their marketing context including the artwork, the slogans, the pricing and the positioning tells a far greater story of middle America in the 1950s and ’60s. It was a time when television was ascendant and so powerful as a galvanizing force that there was hardly a line between the television shows and the products and marketing schemes that were spun off of them.

Unlike 21st century media, where there are so many ways to get the news and entertainment of the day, television ruled the era that is replaying now in Jeff Silna’s basement. The effect is both nostalgic and eerie. Here in the pinks, blues, reds and greens of yesteryear is a simpler era. If you happened to have been a middle-class kid growing up then, a good deal of your memories are on display here. But it’s also a time of heavy and prescient history.

A 1950s tin Greyhound bus, about 10 inches long and 3 inches high, is on display in a lighted glass cabinet. Silna points out the irony in toy-sized form: All the passengers are white but one – a lone woman in the back of the bus – who is black. Across the room is an original display of plastic battery-operated cigarette lighters complete with a pack of fake cigarettes emblazoned Philip Morris. The cultural references can be pointed.

But there is no getting past the fact that these are the real deal. From the tin cars and plastic fire trucks to the candy-apple-red tricycle and the mechanized Mr. Machine, these are three-dimensional, tangible things of childhood. Silna insists, “Don’t get me wrong.” If he were a kid today, he’d be playing Wii and xbox and be extremely tapped into the virtual world of toys and games. But here, in a big, pink-hued basement in Northern New Jersey, he’s managed to create an oddly fitting homage to a world gone by as surely as the stylus in his Select-o-matic juke box plays “Aquarius” and “Love is Blue” on the original 45’s.

There’s both reverence and joy in this careful preservation of what many of us could call our childhood.

These days, now that he is retired from the chain of one-hour photo stores he once owned, Silna has turned to an even more sophisticated form of preservation and display. Like fossils in amber, the framed dioramas which Silna creates might include a toy, elements of its display and elements of its marketing campaign in a matted and glass-encased presentation. He’s selling them to interested customers, sometimes for as much as $2,000.

These windows into culture and a selection of his vintage toys can be seen at Baumgart’s in northern New Jersey (Ridgewood, edgewater, englewood, Livingston). They provide both context and décor to the popular eateries, a place which dabbles in its own brand of nostalgia.

That sense of nostalgia plays a big part in the collection of toys. For Silna, it translates to a delight and wonderment that is so vibrant in his basement of toys.

And it’s why Silna took special note of Donald Kaufman’s last few months. Kaufman, the owner of KB Toys, sold parts of the 7,000-piece toy collection last year at auction just before he died at the age of 79. “These aren’t my toys,” Kaufman told the New york Times. “I am just taking care of them.”

That’s just the way Silna feels about his toys. What Kaufman said is important, says Silna, “because it’s true.” True for Kaufman and true for him as well. “I take really good care of these things.”

People come, people go. It’s their toys that live on.

Influential MovementIn the world of haute horlogerie, complicated timepieces are a collector’s dream come true. A complicated watch is one that offers functions not typical in a timekeeper – functions that often take master watchmakers years to develop and months to build. Often, these finished watches house hundreds of tiny mechanical parts in their movements and are built in such limited editions that they have waiting lists and carry cool high-five-and six-figure price points.

[A] A world premiere, this 18-karat rose gold Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck watch is the first to display the gravitational influences of the moon and the sun, the centrifugal force of earth on tides and to depict tides anywhere in the world. This patented astronomical watch also displays the sun and moon positions in relation to the earth, and simultaneously displays the moon phases. Complete with GMT indication and calendar date, the watch is the fruit of years of research and development, resulting from the collaboration between Ulysse Nardin and world-renowned scientist and watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin. Moonstruck houses an in-house manufactured caliber (UN-106) and is built in a limited edition of 500 pieces in 18-karat 5N rose gold and 500 pieces in platinum. It retails for $88,000. Available at The Timepiece Collection, 58 east Palisade Ave., englewood; (201) 894-1825; ulysse-nardin.com.

[B] This Breguet Classique Grande Complication 5347 Double Tourbillon is a technical masterpiece crafted in 18-karat rose gold and housing a hand-wound movement with two tourbillon regulators rotating on the hour axis. The movement consists of 570 components including 85 jewels. It retails for $374,900. Available at Laviano Jewelers, 175 Westwood Ave., Westwood; (201) 664-0616; lavianojewelers.com

[C] From Audemars Piguet, this Jules Audemars watch is crafted in platinum and houses the 267-part hand-wound Caliber 2908 with Audemars Piguet escapement, which was 10 years in the making. It operates lubricant-free at a frequency of 43,200 vibrations per hour and guarantees superior shock resistance. It retails for $239,600. Available at Hamilton Jewelers, 19 Broad St., Red Bank; (731) 741-9600; audemarspiguet.com.

[D] From Breitling, this Chrono-Matic QP is crafted in 18-karat red gold and features a black dial with tachymeter and an Ocean Racer black leather strap with a red gold deployment buckle. The watch, which is created in a limited edition of 125 pieces for worldwide distribution, is a Quantieme perpetual calendar offering, among other things, indication of the days, date, month, season, leap year and moonphases. It retails for $58,635. Available at Leo Fasseas, 171 South Livingston Avenue, Livingston; 973-533-1114; fasseasjewelers.com.

e] From Richard Mille, this RM021 Tourbillon Aerodyne is crafted in either 18-karat red gold, white gold or titanium. It houses a tourbillon escapement, which compensates for the effects that gravity can have on timekeeping when the wrist is in certain positions. The watch retails for $315,000 in titanium. Available at Cellini at the Waldorf-Astoria, NyC; (800) Cellini; richardmille.com.

We asked three color experts: “What are the color trends for this season?”

Bold and graphic, Urban Decay is heavily influenced by the global economic meltdown and teams dark and dramatic colors with paint finishes as well as bright color for a real statement. Use full gloss paints to create a high shine surface and inject with zingy, bright colors.

At the other end of the spectrum, Glitz & Glamour is all about wealth and indulgence. Rich, opulent shades like Pitch Blue and Churlish Green co-exist alongside shimmering gold and metallics for an extravagant feel. This glamorous, glitzy look has a Middle Eastern influence, so the myriad of colors is definitely for the color-lover.

By Karen M. Harris

This season, color reflects culture in four strikingly different schemes, according to the experts at Farrow & Ball.Inspired by industrial architecture, the company’s Industrial Palette is all about modernity mixed with tradition. Old and new are combined in an urban palette of muted tones that mimic the earthy shades of natural materials such as stone, clay, chalk and brick. The deep, dramatic hues are accented and uplifted by splashes of vibrant color in citrus shades.

Also inspired by nature, Aquatic is a soft, watery palette defined by the elements. Key colors are Pavilion Blue, Tunsgate Green, Blue Ground and James White.

FARROW & BALL www.farrow-ball.com

Joe Pisarri, owner of Eagle Paint & Wallpaper, Inc. in Englewood, NJ is seeing his clients stick with conservative colors.“More people are staying with traditional colors,” he says. “The economy is keeping people in the same palette they already had. They’re afraid to mix it up, so they’re staying with creams, beiges, golds, copper, apricot and Ralph Lauren green.”

What dictates his clients’ tastes are their choices for granite, flooring and wood accents. “It isn’t off of trends,” he says. “It’s more off of monochromatic tones.”

That does mean that some clients aren’t going brighter. “If they’ve had a brighter palette, they’ll keep it,” says Joe, who has 35 years’ experience in color consultation and is the only company that ships Donald Kaufman paints throughout the world.

Joe, who is working on the former Frick Estate in Alpine, offers one tip: consider your ceiling as your fifth wall. Think outside the white box and choose a complementary color.

According to home stager Rima Hamadé of Exclusively Staged, walls aren’t the only place you can try out the latest trends.Color can easily be implemented in any environment. “Whether it’s introducing a fresh hue to a new vignette or staging project, incorporating it within key accessories such as pillows, candles or tassels has the potential to convey an innovative ambience.”

Since painting may not be possible, Rima can enhance a home by infusing some of these in-vogue colors through paintings/wall art, curtain fabrics, and even fruit displays.

She says that home décor color trends for 2010 vary from bold to soft, from tomato puree to pink champagne, spiced orange to fusion coral, violet to plum, soft turquoise to Amparo blue, and dried herbs to golden green.

“Pantone’s color palette and imagery-provoking names was a strong favorite of mine for this year,” she says. The eight palettes range in color schemes from Greenmarket (hues such as Beaujolais, Paprika and Chutney that appeal to the eyes and taste buds), Gatherings (Sand, Oasis and Twilight Mauve inspired by Africa) and Galaxy (which mimics the colors of earth and sky in Greener Pastures, Peridot and Rich Gold). “An additional palette of Tinged Neutrals is also a contributing trend and wonderful base as always,” she adds.

Rima suggests emphasizing an architectural detail or dramatizing the mood and atmosphere of your space with these hot colors.

Leather isoneoftheoldestcoveringsand,oddly,oneofthemostoverlookedforexpressivehomeinteriorsotherthanfurniture.

Rather quietly over the past five years or so, leather has evolved into a breathtaking flooring surface. For stairs and walls, too. even ceilings, wall coverings, moldings and trim.

If you’re into environmental consciousness, much of today’s leather flooring is made from sustainable and renewable, often recycled, materials. Many of these may have found their way into the waste streams and are now being reused. Fortunately, leather has become an affordable, eco-friendly product with almost unimaginable style.

you can find leather in any format, from large-scale tile to long, free-flowing planks with beveled edges, even panels for walls and cabinetry. Because leather can be dyed, colors (for matching and coordinating) are plentiful. embossing and finishing technologies like top-stitching assist with more elegant looks, perhaps the look of leather from rare species without the environmental cost.

Because of the techniques used in applying leather over a substrate and the array of formats, designers can create endless custom looks, including sophisticated geometrics, with relative ease. These include pre-fab medallions ready for installation. How about an oversized tile, say 15 inches square, made of leather (ranging from burgundy to pearl white) framed in your favorite hardwood, perhaps an American exotic like maple or Brazilian cherry?

Today’s leather flooring can go just about anywhere in the home, including below grade and over some existing floors, depending on the floor’s condition and underlayment. These floors are easy to clean, maintain and even repair, if necessary, often with simple hand tools.

From yachts to commercial buildings to restaurants to your home, leather is making a statement.

Delaware Township, which lies along the Delaware River forming the western boundary of Hunterdon County, remains much as it looked in the 1700s: rolling fields dotted with picturesque barns belonging to farms that have changed little in 200 years.

A Manhattan couple familiar with Hunterdon County from summers spent there, searched and searched for a weekend home. Nothing seemed right for this in-the-fashion-world duo. After weighing the commitment and added responsibility of building, they took on the challenge of creating a home that would respect and reflect this historic community’s deep agricultural roots.

The clients were well versed in feng shui and Eastern traditions, so finding the right piece of property was key. They found an 18-acre parcel carved from a large farm overlooking preserved land that met all their criteria: the house had to be sited straight (as opposed to at an angle) on the property and it had to face both directly south and a body of water. One client recalled, “With these aspects in place and a sense of peace and calm, the creation of the house almost seemed predetermined. We knew it was right from the start.”

They joined forces with Lynne Persan of Building Designs, LLC in Georgetown, Conn., and together they designed a modern, deconstructed farmhouse, a dramatic study in minimalism. Ms. Persan explained, “We were placing our house on open farm land, where there are still a lot of quaint, old country

cottages and farmhouses all around. We created a simple, lined, white clapboard exterior with a wrap-around roof awning for a country farmhouse look, but added my clients’ own personal touch by opting for a silver metal roof as opposed to typical asphalt shingles.”

She continued, “There was an emphasis placed on simplicity, symmetry and balance in the interior as well. The lines were to be clean, with large open spaces, hidden closets and clean edging without any moldings or baseboards.”

The enormous, 60-foot-by-42-foot great room with a ceiling that soars to 24 feet, is an engineering marvel and a stunning expanse of space and light. Its 12 French doors and windows above, mirror each other across the room and throw ever-changing patterns of light on the dark ebony floors. Symmetry and balance are also evident in the furniture arrangement that flanks the fireplace centered on the far wall.

At the other end of the great room, the vast open space passes under a steel-and-glass balcony into a sleek, sun-filled, stainless steel-glass-and-marble kitchen. Also on this floor is a guest suite with six more French doors and a Zen-like, black marble bath.

A steel-and-glass stairway leads to the second floor and an office on the balcony overlooking the great room. Radiant-heated limestone floors flow throughout the master suite, which contains a handsome limestone-and-cherry-wood bath, a dressing room and a master chamber with a floor-to-ceiling wall of glass framing a single cherry tree outside.

The third floor is another large, open expanse which runs the whole length of the residence. It is more traditionally styled with paneling, a vaulted ceiling, bleached wood floors, a fireplace and a wall-to-wall banquette under a bank of wall-to-wall windows. A bath with a large circular window, walk-in shower, twin sinks and a claw-foot tub is also on this level.

With its sense of peace and calm, style, sophistication and simplicity are the essence of this elegant, minimalist farmhouse that even locals agree is a welcome addition to their rural landscape.

At first, you are startled to see what appears to be an enormous, industrial shed rising from a manicured lawn, surrounded by ancient trees and rambling stone walls. And since this steel-and-glass behemoth is sitting on 3 acres that were once part of the Pfizer estate in the affluent, exclusive town of Bernardsville, it seems even more incongruous.

As you approach one of its gigantic, garage-like glass doors, it becomes even more intriguing when you notice that this huge, galvanized-steel structure has been built over and encloses a two-story gardener’s cottage circa 1880, complete with shutters, roof and furniture on the front porch.

Opposite the cottage, at the other end of this cavernous metal building, nine rooms are stacked in a translucent, three-story concrete, aluminum and glass grid. It all brings a contemporary, life-size dollhouse to mind.

And, there’s more.

In between the vintage gardener’s cottage at one end and the modern grid at the other is a traditional, suburban living room with upholstered sofas, a coffee table, end tables, chairs and lamps flanked by two enormous glass doors that rise up to bring the outdoors in.

K A L K I N H O U S E B E R N A R D S V I L L E N J

It is quite evident that Adam Kalkin, the noted architect, designer and artist who conceived this unusual space, loves to place things and, by extension, people in unexpected contexts. A huge industrial shed constructed over the old Pfizer estate’s original gardener’s cottage on tony Bernardsville Mountain? A modern, glass grid of stacked rooms, facing a clapboard cottage with a traditional, suburban living room in between? Why not?

This house has every amenity and convenience of a traditional home. There is a modern cook’s kitchen, two bedrooms including the master, and a library with a fireplace in the cottage. In the grid, two bedrooms and a bath are on the first floor. An office, study and another library are on the second. A guest suite is on the third.

The house was decorated by Albert Hadley, a legend in interior design, who people associate more with fancy Park Avenue duplexes, Babe Paley, Brooke Astor and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Hadley, who had worked for Kalkin’s parents who live down the road, found their son’s project to be “a refreshing challenge. It’s sort of nutsville to build a hangar over that tiny cottage, but the resulting luxury of space is what we all dream of these days,” he said. Kalkin raves, “There’s no question, Albert Hadley made the house much richer and more accessible to people who might not understand it.”

This enormous steel-and-glass industrial shed with 14 rooms, two fireplaces, five bedrooms and four and half baths is so much more than an unusual, one-of-a-kind residence. In the words of Albert Hadley, “It’s a living sculpture in the landscape.”

A Storybook Setting.

Stepping into the Montclair home of Dorothea Benton Frank and Peter Frank is like stepping into another, more gracious era. The home is so hospitable, you can’t help but wish you’d been invited to their annual Christmas party, with a tree that goes up to the ceiling, loads of friends and caroling.

Their eight-bedroom English Manor House, named “Highwall,” was built into the side of majestic First Mountain in 1928, and every detail inside and out is magical, from the enchanting spiral staircase in the oak library to the secluded koi pond above the tennis court. And that’s before you even turn around and check out the view of the New York City skyline.

“I think I’ll miss the view the most,” says Ms. Frank. “It’s like a blaze of red at sunrise and when the sun sets, it’s amazing. You can see the Verrazano Bridge. You look out the window with your husband at the twinkling lights and think, ‘What did I ever do to deserve this house?’”

But the New York Times best-selling author of 10 books – from her debut Sullivan’s Island, based loosely on her own roots on the barrier island off Charleston, SC, to Lowcountry Summer, due out June 15 – clearly deserves all the goodness she gets. Storybook setting or not, she works a demanding schedule,, writing one book a year in the beautiful office with the built-in, floor-to-ceiling book shelves and windows on three sides.

“We fell in love with the house,” says Ms. Frank. “It’s a wonderful house for children. But our kids are 21 and 25, so it’s time for another family to raise their kids here.”

Best-selling author Dorothea Benton Frank raised her children and wrote her way to fame in this stunning home built into a mountain

Here’s a sam pling of what sheloves in and around Montclair:

• Montclair Art Museum: “My whole social life started there – I was on the board for two terms. And it’s so accessible. My kids walked there all the time from our house.”

• Watchung Booksellers and Montclair Book Center: “I like their taste in books.”

• Highlawn Pavilion: “First-class view from the bar – we ordered dinner there and loved it.”

• La Sicilia in Belleville: “The thin-crust pizza is to die for.”

• Ruthie’s: “Really good barbecue – out of this world.”

• Richie Cecere’s: “It’s nice to go get a martini sometimes.”

• Williams-Sonoma: “I got my glasses, dishes and flatware there.”

• Bobbi Brown Studio: “Love the Beach fragrance.”

• edgemont and Alexander parks: “Great for walks.”

• Garden Shop: “Has the prettiest flowers in Montclair.”

It’s true – it is a wonderful house for children. The Franks’ son’s and daughter’s rooms are like dream rooms from a shelter magazine, spacious and sweet with fairy-tale views out of charming windows. “How many mornings did I come in here and say ‘William, look at the sunrise with me,’” Ms. Frank says, remembering how she would rouse her young son out of bed to see the blazing red sunbeams.

History & styleBut while the house retains so much of its original charm – hand-plastered ceilings, original copper and brass sconces, a special trap door for handing logs from the wood room to the dining room – it’s wired for the modern family too.

“I am wireless and I do have Jacuzzis and a gorgeous wine cellar,” says Ms. Frank. “We operate here very much in the 21st century.” The wine cellar holds about 3,000 bottles of whites, first growths and more, in a room that is refrigerated at 55 perfectly chilled degrees.

The B-shaped swimming pool is a glamorous throwback to Elmer Bobst, a previous owner who was a prominent philanthropist and instrumental in marketing Listerine in its earlier days. The library has so much to love, not surprising in a popular writer’s home. The two floors of shelves hold thousands of books, and a huge pull-down movie screen and blackout shades turn the space into an intimate movie theater.

Ms. Frank’s eye for beauty is evident everywhere, from the feminine dressing room suited for a Southern belle to the vintage blue-and-white Ralph Lauren fabrics in the guest room.

The author also loves to create in the kitchen (her Web site, dotfrank.com, even has a recipe tab with Southern favorites like biscuits and caramel icing). She’s got an awesome arrangement for cooking and serving, and ample shelving for her cookbook collection. What’s not to love?

A Palatial Franklin Lakes Estate, Redefines Indoor/Outdoor Living As We Know It Today

From the beginning, the project was all about blurring the line between inside and out. Our clients — a publishing executive and his wife who was active in many charitable causes — spoke passionately about the indoor/outdoor lifestyle they experienced in hotels and resorts around the world,” recalled Neill Parker Jr., an architect, who along with his colleague John Stonehill of Stonehill & Taylor Architects PC, translated their clients’ dreams into reality. “They wanted an open, contemporary, light-filled space comfortably scaled for their close-knit family, friends and business associates to enjoy, that could also serve groups of up to 200 people for charity events.”

In close collaboration with their clients, Stonehill and Parker designed a palatial 16,000-square-foot Mediterranean villa with classical columns, arches, friezes and other Renaissance motifs. It all brings to mind an updated, modern-day villa in Tuscany influenced by the iconic Prairie designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. To update its timeless Mediterranean design, rich materials — limestone, marble, mahogany, ashwood, wrought iron and bronze — were incorporated to add modern detailing.

This luxurious home was structured around a series of courtyards, colonnades and loggias, with more than 40 oversized French doors, which when opened, do indeed blur the line between the inside and outside.

“John and I got very excited as we imagined a “courtyard lifestyle” with a sequence of “outdoor rooms” that would become some of the most popular spaces in the house,” Parker said.

The handsome limestone entry portico is reminiscent of the entrance to an ancient Mayan temple. It leads to an enormous central courtyard with a cascading fountain, surrounded by limestone columns, French doors and glass walls that offer a glimpse into the home’s elegant interior. Across the courtyard, the main entrance opens into an imposing, 40-foot-high rotunda, circled by clerestory windows that cast soft, dappled light on the dramatic cherry-wood stairway.

Three wings fan out from the rotunda. The first is the main living area. This includes a 50-foot sunken living room opening to a southern courtyard, and a dining room that can easily seat 28, opening to the entry courtyard with the fountain. Adjacent to the chef’s kitchen, the family room with a limestone fireplace and an entertainment center is the hub of activity in the home. Right outside is another casual outdoor room, a loggia with its own kitchen and a barbecue.

The second wing includes a book gallery and a cherry-wood paneled library with more than 10,000 books and a handsome, black granite fireplace. There is also a guest suite with a kitchenette and a private terrace in this wing.

The third wing houses the pool complex. Its spectacular 40-foot pool was inspired by the Neptune pool at San Simeon, William Randolph Hearst’s famous castle in Northern California. On a clear day, one can see for 100 miles in the glass-enclosed hot tub at the far end of the pool. A full spa with dressing rooms, showers, sauna, an exercise room and its own kitchen is adjacent to the pool.

Upstairs, there is a three-bedroom wing for the children, and a 1,260-square-foot master bedroom suite with separate his and her marble baths, each with its own sunken whirlpool and private terrace.

Just 40 minutes from midtown Manhattan on the highest point in exclusive Franklin Lakes, this 3.5-acre, gated, hilltop estate took two years to design and two more years to build. With its stunning, world-class architecture and palatial proportions, this luxurious residence redefines indoor/outdoor living as we know it today.

The owners of this gracious home in Summit left no stone unturned in their renovation of the historic Shipman House. They approached every step with the refined taste and wealth of knowledge that comes only from those who are passionate about true craftsmanship and artisanal details.

Standing majestically on

tranquil, tree-lined Hillcrest Avenue, the four-level, 17-room residence is a masterpiece, accentuated by stylish landscaping, an in-ground swimming pool and every comfort of a well-appointed home, from seven wood-burning fireplaces to breathtaking his and hers dressing rooms. You’ll find an integrated audio system (even on the screened porch), central Lutron lighting system, heated floors in all five full bathrooms and an inspiring office with balcony and built-in bookshelves.

All through the Colonial Revival home, you can’t miss the marks of mastery and delight that embrace the history of Shipman House yet also take it to the peak of modern luxury.

tHis is living“My wife and I were involved in every selection, every detail,” says the owner. “We had our thumb on everything, from the flowers in the garden to the French marble in the dressing room and the special art lighting. This house deserved that kind of treatment.”

The architect drafted 25 different designs before the couple settled on their spacious, streamlined gourmet kitchen, with slide-out

pantry, electronic blinds, hand-carved woodworking and a cup of color and whimsy where you’d least expect it – inside the cabinet doors.

If the walls could speak, they’d tell of a summery Sunday brunch for 120 held on the terrace to honor the couple’s daughter and her bridegroom the day after their New York wedding. They’d recall the sweets-laden table inside, the glasses raised and hot coffee sipped in a setting of timeless elegance. Those walls would also remember happy Thanksgiving feasts and colorful Halloweens.

The house is so spacious, the owners have slept 14 comfortably when guests were in town – and the guest room is lovelier than any upscale B&B’s master suite. “Everyone who has stayed there has not wanted to leave,” notes the owner. With their artistic sensibility – a gift they’ve polished during years of travel – he and the lady of the manor have made everything alluring and inviting.

“Every view is calculated around here,” he says, “even what you see when you look out the window in the powder room.” It turns out good taste runs in the family. One of the owner’s brothers was the architect, and another did the interior design.

garden PartyOutside mattered a great deal, too. The grounds (1.28 acres) were put in the hands of Alice Recknagel Ireys, one of the most prominent landscape architects of the 20th century, who designed the Fragrance Garden at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. She was in her eighties when she took on the Summit house, arriving via car and driver from Brooklyn; it was her last major project before her death.

“Alice was almost finished here when she died,” says the owner. “She had done work for Babe Paley, Barbara Walters. She touched everything here, right down to the mass of flowers planted near the garden house because I said I wanted to feel like I was looking at a garden in France.”

Inside and out, it is truly a home for those to the manor born.

When he wants to sell a house, he parks Rolls Royces and Maseratis in the driveway, puts swimsuit models in the pool and hires “The Next American Idol” (his words) to belt out Christina Aguilera on the floating double staircase. Then he invites the cognoscenti of Wall Street and the glitterati of the design world to mix and mingle.

“I always found that an event brought people together,” he explains.

For his latest event in Upper Brookville, NY, he started with a guest list of 250. More than 500 showed up at the 14,500-square-foot Mediterranean-style Villa at Chestnut Hill. To get past the phalanx of black-clad bodyguards, guests had to produce a business card. “It became the place to be,” he says. So much so that the line of Mercedes, Porsches and other imports squeezed the streets of the gated community into one lane and stretched for more than a half-mile. Not bad for a Wednesday night in March on Long Island’s North Shore.

Shawn says the Villa was the right venue for his party. He had the ability to utilize his strategic partnerships with Rolls Royce Motorcars Long Island, Ferrari of Long Island and Maserati of Long Island to fill the gated courtyard, Thomas Grimaldi Billiards to furnish Ms. Pac-Man and pool tables and the Echo Agency to supply a bevy of white-clad models serving up de Loach chardonnay and tuna tartar. A couple also lounged in the indoor pool room, soaking in the hot tub and chatting with guests.

“There is the anticipation that if someone didn’t buy that night, then 500 people would tell 10 about the home and so on,” Shawn says. His theory paid off: there was a bid during the party.

Shawn has always had a knack for making the deal. He began his career in the family retail shoe business, honing his sales skills. After graduating with a marketing degree from the University of Miami, he decided to branch out from the family business. Since the women who bought shoes from the Elliotts would also obviously have to buy clothes, he opened a shop and used the shoe store’s mailing list for promotion. From there, he branched out to United Colors of Benetton franchises, eventually opening 14 stores which became the most profitable in the U.S.

With his proven retail success and marketing background, Shawn decided in 1999 to form The Elliott Retail Group, a consultant for major wholesalers wanting to expand into the retail sector. His first client was a West Coast chain of stores. Good and bad: a successful new career but constant commuting to L.A. The travel eventually became too much for the family – wife Betsy and sons Jake (now in 11th grade) and Zachary (an undergrad at the University of Miami). So Shawn decided it was time for another career makeover.

His mom says Shawn was a born real-estate agent. She remembers taking him to look at a house when he was 5. “He told me we couldn’t buy the house because the driveway was too long and he’d be late for school,” she remembers.

He got his real estate license in 2001 and joined a major broker. His first sale in his first month was north of $1 million. Shawn Elliott Luxury Listings was quickly born under the aegis of his employer. The business lasted a year, when Shawn decided it was time to go out on his own.

In 2002, Shawn Elliot Luxury Homes & Estates was born, quickly growing from three to five to 20 agents. A second office was opened. Other agencies were acquired. The business grew to 30 agents and associate brokers.

With the real-estate brokerage going strong, Shawn decided in 2008 to add condos to his repertoire. He bought another firm, growing his organization to more than 100 full-time agents. He also branched out in the industry with Luxury Title Agency.

By mid-2009, Shawn Elliot Luxury Homes & Estates had put into contract more homes worth more than $5 million than in the history of the company. Sales reached in excess of $200 million.

Shawn credits his ability to be creative and proactive for his success, saying Realtors can’t stick with traditional sales methods. Open houses from 3 to 5 don’t bring in potential buyers. But a sunset party with engraved invitations at the home of a professional athlete do. The New York Times covered it. The $4.5 million house was in contract within a week of the party.

His customer base includes “the Who’s Who of the North Shore”: Fortune 500 businessmen, physicians, athletes and entertainers. Partygoers include Talon Air Vice President Jason Sanders, jewelry designer Ron Rizzo and handbag designer Kathy Van Zeeland. “This is relationship driven,” he says. “Everybody helping everybody.”

Shawn’s next venture is magazine publisher, the perfect marriage for real estate and promotion. Shawn Elliott Luxury magazine debuted in the fall of 2009 and will be published quarterly. Each magazine will coincide with a party at a listed Gold Coast home.

“I want to build a brand, do something different,” he says, adding that Long Island needs a lifestyle magazine so he’s filling the niche. His “strategic alliances” are showcased in the pages. From interior designers to exotic car dealers to builders, all those who work with Shawn are also in print.

Shawn Elliott Luxury has a distribution of 25,000 copies. The size is growing: from 58 pages in the first issue to probably 84 with the third issue in June. He envisions the brand expanding beyond print. He hired a film crew for the Villa event and is putting together a demo to pitch to HGTV and Bravo.

But that isn’t enough for 2010. He’s also buying another real estate company. One more way that, as his office phone message states, he can “sell your home faster and for more money than the competition.”

Dr. Jim Morgan flew into Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the Saturday after the earthquake and began the arduous task of looking for a way into Haiti. There were organizations taking physicians into the country but lining up a flight took time. Dr. Morgan did not feel he had time to play with. He wanted to get into Port Au Prince ASAP and then make his way to check on his clinic and the people in the village of Cite Soleil. He spoke with some journalists in the airport in Santo Domingo. They had reserved a bus, more like a van, and were heading into Haiti the next day. They had an extra space if Dr. Morgan needed it. With that in his back pocket, he kept looking. He noticed a sign – handwritten – that said, “U.N. Reception Area.” He told them his story, about the clinic and the people who relied on it, that he spoke Creole, that he was a doctor. The next day, Sunday January 17, he was on a helicopter to Port Au Prince. He had a bird’s eye view of the devastation. The only word he could think of to describe it: “unbelievable.” He landed in the capital city amidst the rubble and chaos. “This was like 9-11 that kept going,” he said. That night he worked in a nearby hospital doing pre- and post-operative work. There were so many abdominal wounds to people injured in collapsed homes and buildings. In the operating room, doctors were overwhelmed with amputations. Dr. Morgan didn’t stop until after 10 p.m. The next day, he needed to get to his clinic. There was no phone contact, so he took a taxi.

In the days after the earthquake some of his staff had been accosted by renegades. “(Our clinic) had been protected by the U.N.,” Dr. Morgan said. “But the U.N. headquarters (in Port Au Prince) collapsed and a lot of people died in the building. I think a lot of the (soldiers)

retreated to the collapsed building to help out there. That left a vacuum. There were reports of gangs reassembling. Some of our staff were accosted by two different people. One with a gun, one with a machete.” His priority was to reassemble his staff, reopen the clinic. “It was important to show solidarity with the community,” he said. “To show them this earthquake was not going to stop us. To open the doors. He had to find food, water and generators, smaller things like tires and drivers for the water truck. Three of his staffers lost their homes, one was living under a tarp. Meanwhile, the people in the community walked around dazed. Most wore surgical masks to block out the stench of decaying bodies. Once the clinic was up and running, the staff would begin work in the morning, take a late lunch and get back to the clinic at 5 p.m. They stayed until after 9 p.m. They extended hours, revised policy – the strongest waited for the neediest to be seen first. Dr. Morgan was there three weeks. He is home now. His wife, also a physician, arranged a trip in February. “You know,” Dr. Jim Morgan said, “parts of the experience were uplifting. A couple of women came up to me and hugged me. They said they heard we were abandoning the clinic. They were so happy we weren’t. “And I kind of felt like a baby. It is so hard down there, the work is so hard. It’s such a grind. You look around and, obviously, this is the state of affairs there now.” It feels overwhelming, he said. And he is planning on going back.

t he Food Service Training Academy is a free, 14-week program operated by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Hillside. The FoodBank, New Jersey’s

largest, occupies a 40,000-square-foot warehouse, the size of seven football fields. FSTA students are mostly very poor and African-American; classes include ex-cons, recovering addicts, low-wage earners, and people receiving public assistance. Recently, a number of recession victims have enrolled, hoping for a fresh start in the culinary field. Students range in age from 18 to 65. Some are passionate about cooking; others are steered into the program by counselors, relatives or former graduates. The professionally trained chefs and support staff combine idealism and generosity with a no-nonsense, boot-camp approach to teaching ”what the industry requires.” The Academy, which opened in 2000, is celebrating a decade of job training in food services.

It’s the first day of the once-a-term Food Competition at the Food Service Training Academy. U.S. regional cuisines are on display, to be followed over three more days by offerings from around the world. Twelve teams are hoping to medal. A handwritten sign, “Yo, Adrienne!” dominates the wall behind Doreen Racklin and Ali Bey’s serving station. Next to the sign are 16 iconic photos from the Mid-Atlantic Region of the U.S. On the lunch line, FoodBank staff members recognize the Liberty Bell, the New York Harbor and a Maryland crab. Two warehouse workers point to Rocky Balboa – arms raised in triumph – on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A woman from Jersey City identifies the Miss America Diner on West Side Avenue as a landmark eatery. Napkins in red and blue with dancing white stars decorate Doreen and Ali’s long serving table. Diners, they remind us, are All-American places, whether owned by food-loving Italians or Greeks who dominate the business. Red-checkered tablecloths and red bandanas wrapped around display stands reinforce the down-home, made-in-the-USA look. New Jersey, Doreen and Ali report, has more diners per capita than any state in the nation. Let the drums roll! Here’s to New Jersey-on-the-turnpike, book-ended by Philly and the Big Apple. Here’s to no-nonsense East Coast eating, the menu announces: the Maryland crab cake, the Philly cheese steak, Jersey “disco fries” and New York cheesecake. Here’s to taste-friendly food for folks in a rush. In the division of labor, Doreen presides over the station while Ali is back at the stove. Both hostess and waitress, she greets customers as if they are her friends, her regulars, her reason for getting up in the morning and standing on her feet all day. Her routine is smooth as a dancer’s. First, she serves mini steak sandwiches on home-made potato rolls. “Cheese,” she asks as she waves a mustard dispenser filled with cheesy sauce – “Cheese Whiz” is the classic – in the direction of the roll. Next, she reaches to grab a tiny paper cup of miniature fries and drops it neatly into each customer’s black plastic box. With another twist of her torso, she plops in a quarter-size spiced crab cake. Into her rhythm, Doreen points to the small squares of cheesecake, each topped by a slice of strawberry, at the far end of her table. “New York’s best,” she says. “You’ve gotta have it.” Back in the kitchen, Ali keeps the food coming, sweating and smiling as he works. Ali, who refers to himself as “a man from the streets,” is a social creature. He would have preferred being out there: chatting up the customers and hearing their responses to the setting and food. But Ali is also a team player with a well-controlled ego. In fact, in his backstage role, focused on cooking, he’s into his own Rocky Balboa moment. Ali (named Sir Ali by his parents) is a tall, muscled man with golden brown skin and training as a boxer. The diner, “Yo, Adrienne,” (the spelling is the students’) speaks to his knowledge of boxing history;

and it speaks in larger, mythic terms to both student cooks. The name comes from the sixth and last of Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky films, “Rocky Balboa.” Rocky, now a retired boxer, owns and runs an Italian restaurant in Philadelphia. The restaurant is named “Adrian,” for the champion’s wife, dead of cancer. In “Rocky Balboa,” the 50-something protagonist is lured back into the ring to fight the heavy-weight title holder, Mason “On the Line” Dixon, a man in his prime. At one point, as he begins training, Rocky tells his son, “it ain’t about how hard you fight but about how you take the punches and keep going forward.” The actual fight between the aging Balboa and the youthful Dixon goes 10 rounds. There’s a split decision, in favor of Dixon. After the match, Balboa goes to Adrian’s grave and thanks her for her support. “Yo, Adrian,” he exclaims, “we did it! We did it!” Doreen Racklin and Ali Bey, fighters both, understand the power of Rocky’s monumental comeback effort. They understand from the inside. They are both, in their different ways, Rocky Balboa coming back: blond Doreen, at age 50, from 15 years of addiction to painkillers, crack cocaine and heroin. She’s coming back, too, from the loss of her suburban home, marriage and children. Ali, also 50, is coming back from a lifetime of drug dealing (but not using) and 25 years behind bars. Ali and Doreen see Rocky with his dreams, grit and tragic sense as Their Guy. They have transformed his homey restaurant in Philly into their star-spangled East Coast diner. While they’re not calling it a place for American dreamers, the diner is all about inspiration: their precious opportunity for a different way of living and being. It’s a rare moment at the Food Service Training Academy. Two mature students, who understand the cost of their wretched choices, using the Food Competition to announce “we’ve got what it takes to beat the odds and change our game.” Ali and Doreen know in their bones that no one comes back alone from the places they’ve been. Everyone needs a team. Most of us need an audience. Cooks need hungry customers or friends and lovers with hearty appetites. Regardless of the outcome of the competition, this fighting team has already triumphed.

At graduation, Doreen and Ali won the gold medal for the best all-around concept, food preparation and presentation. Ali accepted an 18-week paid position at the school as a culinary associate. Doreen was hired to cook at the shelter and rehabilitation program in Montclair, where she lived while attending the FSTA. She has re-established warm relations with her twin daughters and expects to soon move into her own apartment.

This article is an excerpt from Doris Friedensohn’s book on the Food Service Training Academy at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, to be published by the FoodBank in the fall of 2010.

That gorgeous kitchen countertop that appears to be made of distressed wide-plank dark walnut, complete with hand-hammered nails? “It’s concrete,” says Michelle Radley, J&M’s owner, marketing director and Jeff’s life partner. Michelle, just 29, is speaking over the whir of the compressors in the Randolph factory that transforms Jeff’s one-of-kind designs into concrete reality.

She and Jeff, 38, have nothing against wood. In fact, they love it. It’s just that Jeff — a guy who thinks so far out of the box he’s in another room — loves to find innovative new uses for concrete. He’s never taken a sculpture course in his life, but he can mold concrete into rocks for audacious aquariums; he can capture nature’s details, like fossils and willowy leaves, in concrete tables and countertops; he can design and engineer concrete bars that glow in the dark.

No wonder a bevy of Tri-State hot spots — including Manhattan’s Muse Hotel and the Chelsea Diner — have looked to J&M to supply them with custom concrete creations like sinks, “wood” floors and even aquariums.

Jeff’s artistic and engineering know-how, along with Michelle’s marketing and product development skills, have fueled the company’s rise from industry upstart to leader in just five years, crowning Jeff and Michelle as the king and queen of concrete.

How did you get started?Michelle: Jeff and I met five years ago, at a trade show in Atlantic City. I’d worked in product development, and I was there to test out reaction to a new reflective dog leash a friend of mine created. Jeff had worked in high-end construction for 20 years and was there to promote a rockscape for a custom aquarium he’d designed and engineered. Our booths were across from each other, and we exchanged cards.

And the rest is, well, history?Michelle, smiling: You could say that!

What about you, Jeff? Were you always a creative person? Jeff: I grew up around Sayville, Long Island, on the South Shore, and I used to watch the men building boats. When I was around 12, I made my own six-footer, powered by some weed whacker engines. (He grins.) Let’s just say they were repurposed.

What’s the key to J&M’s success?Michelle: Jeff is half artist, half engineer. It’s a rare combination. The work really speaks for itself. We’re growing much faster than we anticipated. Our sales doubled from 2007-08 and jumped another 30 percent from 08-09. We’re expanding into the 6,000-square-foot space next door.

Despite the bad economy?Michelle: Because of it. When things are tough, contractors, architects and designers need to set themselves apart. And a great way to do that is by using old materials in new ways.

And an example of that would be Jeff’s iconic Chrysler coffee table?Michelle: Exactly. It was inspired by the Chrysler Building and it’s made of concrete, metal, glass and fiber optics. My great-grandfather worked on the skyscraper and helped make the ornamental silver eagles on the 61st floor. Jeff made them a part of the table’s design.

Jeff: The story about her great-grandfather and the Chrysler Building came up around the dinner table at Thanksgiving, and the idea just came together.

What’s it like to work with your life partner?Michelle, chuckling: I’m surprised we haven’t killed each other yet. We’ve been working together for five years, but it sometimes it feels like 15. (She waits a beat.) I actually mean that in a good way!
