ABET is a federation of 30 member societies representing applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology education.

ABET accredits some 2,900 degree programs at more than 600 colleges and universities in the U.S and has

Each year, the member societies contribute over 1,500 volunteers serving as program evaluators, committee and council members, commissioners, and Board representatives.

ABET Accreditation

Visiting Team of evaluators is assembled and self-studies are reviewed in advance of a 3-day on-campus visit by the Team in the Fall. (last Fall we did 124 accreditation visits -- 10 outside the US)

The school receives the Team’s report of each program on the last visit day. There is a due process response period.

Final judgment is rendered the following July

ABET Accreditation is valid for six (6) years? sometimes we go back in three years?occasionally we revoke accreditation.

Accreditation Process Snapshot (cont’d)

All this is done by volunteers and requires 100+ hours of effort.

The ASME Center for Education maintains an active cadre of ~170 Program Evaluators (PEV’s)

PEV’s are selected from applications. They must be ASME members with at least a Master’s Degree and 10+ years

CEd Product & Service Portfolio

members with at least a Master’s Degree and 10+ yearsprofessional experience.

They must participate in a 2-day training workshop involving about 40 hours pre-work and go on an Observation Visit with an Evaluation Team before joining the active pool of evaluators.

PEV performance is formally evaluated during training and on the Observation Visit and on every evaluation visit thereafter.

PEV’s can and are removed from service on the basis of poor evaluations -- This is serious business.

Graduate Teaching Fellowships

Collaboration between ASME and mechanical engineering departments to encourage academic careers.(Most PhD’s go to industry)

Teaching assistantship commitment from applicant's department required

$5,000 each year for a maximum of two years

Generally, two (2) new Fellows selected each year

Program began 1992

43 fellowships have been awarded (56% to women)

75%+ of the Fellows have pursued academic careers

Notably – GTF’92 Patsy Bracken, Rose-Hulman is now an ASME/ABET EAC Commissioner) and GTF’94 Johne Parker, University of Kentucky was an ASME Federal Fellow
