Tecvalco Ltd. has a new service, and it is already gaining momentum in the natural gas pipeline industry. We are proud to announce that we now offer Leak Survey services!

We at Tecvalco Ltd. pride ourselves on providing service that exceeds industry standards. We do this through hard work, honesty, and integrity. While our company is both a master distributor for a wide range of solutions and a manufacturer, we do also offer services in some sectors. The decision to enter the leak detection survey space was made after carefully considering our strengths, and after numer-ous discussions with our existing customers. Our whole team takes great pride in this chance to contribute to the safety of Canada’s natural gas pipeline network.

TECVALCO’S LEAK SURVEY SYSTEM IS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES: • Certified operators who undergo extensive training, classroom examinations, and field evaluations. All Tecvalco’s operators are certified annually per the Canadian Gas Association’s CAAP guidelines. • An extensive audit program that ensures that operators are continuously monitored in the field.• Use of industry-leading leak survey instrumentation, all of which is tested daily, calibrated and serviced by our certified technicians.• Optional use of GPS to monitor the progress of our leak surveyors.

INSTRUMENTATION BEING USED

The Sensit PMD functions by using an infrared optical gas detection system. It is designed to be selective to detecting methane only, and will not false alarm on any other hydro-carbon. It’s detection range is 1 ppm to 100% gas.

For mobile surveys the Sensit VMD is the instrument of choice. The principle of operation is open path infrared absorption spectroscopy technology. As the beam of light passes through a methane plum some of the light is absorbed between the IR transmitter and IR receiver. This is measured using specialized electronics and software. The information is sent to a computer for processing and displaying real-time information for the operator.

Utilizing GPS tracking, Tecvalco can provide proof of when a line was surveyed, and who surveyed it. Field data acquisition options are customizable to the customer’s mapping needs.

The Sensit IRED Ethane Identifier is a portable combustible gas analyzer designed to differentiate between pipeline gas and naturally occurring methane by analyzing the ethane content of a gas sample.

SERVICE OPTIONS:

• Pinpointing• Continuous monitoring • Full system leakage surveys• Mobile surveys • Building inspections• Bar hole surveys • Ethane identification• Explosion investigation• Odor investigation

For emergency situations, certified operators can be called upon to arrive on scene within 24 hours. SENSIT® PMD

Originally invented by Gas Technology Institute (GTI), SENSIT Technologies acquired the rights for commercialization and production in 2011. Since the first APL rolled off SENSIT’s production line, many advancements have been made based on input from end users.

The latest advancement is the incorporation of a Win-dows-based tablet to create 3-D image maps of scan data. The APL can be used to find metallic and non-metallic pipes, in any soil type, to depths to 30 feet. SENSIT Technologies ULTRA-TRAC® Acoustic Pipe Locator (APL) provides an alter-native and supplemental method of locating buried pipes.

The APL transmits and receives acoustic sound waves and then looks for differences in acoustic impedance in the soil caused by pipes, cables, ducts and other buried infrastruc-ture using a process known as impedance mismatch. The APL is able to locate buried utilities, regardless of material type, broken tracer wire and soil conditions.

The chassis, or foot of the unit, houses the battery, elec-tronic components and send-and-receive sensors. Located near the front of the chassis, the actuator sends a series of sound waves, or ‘pings’ into the ground. To the rear of the chassis, dual matched accelerometers receive the sound waves once they have been reflected from a buried pipe, cable, or duct.

How APL Works

With the push of the APL’s scan button, twenty-four pings are delivered into the ground at a single location, known as a slice. A series of slices is known as a scan. A scan must consist of at least 5 slices, to allow internal software to calculate the location of a buried utility line. A pattern will emerge in the survey, identifying the possible location of a buried pipe. The tablet displays this information to the operator on-the-fly in 3-D. Survey data can also be stored for use as a client deliv-erable, emailed to a supervisor for verification, or stored for record keeping purposes.

APL Limitations

• As with GPR and EM, the operator should have a ballpark idea of where the scan should be taken based on system knowledge and surface indicators• As with EM and GPR, the APL cannot tell what type of facility is being located. The operator must verify the util-ity type by potholing or tracing the utility line structure to structure.

Spring is settling in, and that means thaw-ing, melting, and rain – in other words, wet work sites. Workers can quickly remove that water from the site with the Siphon King Utility Pump by King Innovations. The Siphon Utility Pump comes equipped with a high-strength steel shaft for harsh usage and extreme temperatures. With pump sizes ranging from 24” to 72” and a removal rate of 1 gallon every 4 strokes (36” model) the Siphon King Utility Pump is the right tool to get the job done fast.

Tecvalco’s patented CWT heater provides a safe and in-novative method of heating and treating light crude oil in a vertical treater. The heat is provided with steam coils (indirect heat) to treat the oil to pipeline specifications. This is far safer than the traditional method of using fire tubes. Additionally, it alleviates the major safety concern of fire tube failure and collapse.

TECVALCO’S VERTICAL HEATER

TREATER CWT SYSTEMA safer & more economical way to provide heat to VHT’s

Benefits of Utilizing Steam Coil (CWT) vs. Conventional Technology

In a new installation the steam coil flange would be simi-lar size to the existing fire tube size.

The CWT line heater (which utilizes steam coils inside the vertical treater) has an increased thermal efficiency over conventional technology. The thermal efficiency of CWT is between 70 and 80, percent depending on the model.

The CWT boils water under vacuum to make steam for the heat exchange process. The boiling point of the water is reduced significantly under vacuum. Water at atmospheric pressure boils at 100 degrees C. In the CWT, the water boils between 45 degrees C and 65 degrees C, therefore the oil emulsion is heated in the vertical treater between a temperature of 55 degrees C and 65 degrees C by utilizing the latent heat of steam to heat and treat the oil emulsion.

The replacement steam coil will utilize the existing fire tube flanges.

As the steam coils would be located in the oil emulsion area at relatively lower temperature coking or scaling on the steam coils should be relatively non-existent. There-fore, better heat transfer, longer run life, and reduced operating/maintenance cost.

The vacuum also reduces corrosion as there is no air in the system and allows the heater to operate at less than 14.7 psig and 121 degrees C.

Closed system that requires no top ups of glycol and water.

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions due to lower fuel consumption and higher thermal efficiency.

Simplified, operator-friendly instrumentation.

Have a great shot of one of

our products in action?

Send it our way, and it could make it into one of the

next issues of Tecvalco Today.

This CWT Natural Gas Line Heater was installed for PSNC Energy in Stanley, North Carolina.

Last month was a busy one for our sales team on the road. April trade shows started with a trip to the east coast for the Canadian Gas Association Operations Conference. Held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, this show gave our team the opportunity to showcase the CWT Natural Gas Line Heater product line.

Next stop was Anaheim, California for the Western Gas Measurement Short Course, followed by the Western Energy Institute Operations Conference in Newport Beach.

The last show of April was back in Canada, at the Bardon Annual Spring Expo in Grimsby, Ontario. We featured the innovative Clear Pulse in-home filtration system at this show.

Things are not slowing down as we head into May, with shows in: Regina, Saskatchewan; Orlando, Florida; and Kitchener, Ontario.

If you are curious what shows we are heading to next, or even later in the year, head over to http://www.tecvalco.com/event-calendar/
