DID YOU KNOW?

The Ascension of Our Lord, which occurred 40 days after Jesus Christ rose from the dead on Easter, is the final act of our redemp-

tion that Christ began on Good Friday. On this day, the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven

(Luke 24:51; Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9-11).(The celebration is transferred to the following Sunday).

The History of the Ascension of Our Lord: The reality of Christ's Ascension is so important that the creeds (the basic statements of

belief) of Christianity all affirm, in the words of the Apostles' Creed, that "He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God

the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead." The denial of the Ascension is as grave a depar-

ture from Christian teaching as is denial of Christ's Resurrection. Christ's bodily Ascension foreshadows our own entrance into

Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the dead at the Final Judgment. In re-

deeming mankind, Christ not only offered salvation to our souls but began the restoration of the material world itself to the glory

that God intended before Adam's fall.

The Feast of the Ascension marks the beginning of the first novena, or nine days of prayer. Before His Ascension, Christ promised

to send the Holy Spirit to His apostles. Their prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which began on Ascension Thursday, ended

with the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, ten days later.

Today, Catholics recall that first novena by praying the Novena to the Holy Ghost between Ascension and Pentecost, asking for the

gifts of the Holy Spirit and the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

GOSPEL MEDITATION

Clothing can serve many purposes in our occupation, profession or a

team association. We do dress differently for various events. Jesus

promises the disciples that they will be “clothed with power from on

high.” This clothing with the Holy Spirit resides within allowing the

person to be an icon, a living manifestation of Christ to others. Just as

Jesus is God’s Word in action, so to does the Holy Spirit empower us

today to be God’s Word in action as members of the Body of Christ.

God never forces us. We must accept and cooperate with God’s gift.

In what ways do others see Christ in us? In what ways do we need to

cooperate with God’s grace to allow Christ to be seen in us in every

moment? We are each a work in progress.

mento? Todos somos un trabajo en progreso.

BE PART OF THE ASCENSION’S

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY

At the time of a death in a family, support of the

Church is important. In addition to the pastor offering

support by celebrating the funeral Mass and gravesite blessing, lay

persons of the Church minister to the family by providing a reception

to celebrate their loved one’s life. If you have been looking for a way

to help and just do not have time to serve a ministry on a regular ba-

sis, this is a great opportunity! Our bereavement coordinator will con-

tact folks that are interested in helping these families by bringing food

items such as: desserts, sandwiches, veggie or fruit trays. If for some

reason you can not participate when you are called to bring a food

item you simply state that you can not bring something this time and

to keep you on the list for the next family that has a death from our

parish. Please contact Putzie Martin at [email protected] and add

your name to the calling list.

wiches, fruta, postres etc. Si esta interesado favor de comunicarse con

Putzie Martin correo electronico: [email protected].

Ladies of Charity Meeting

May 12. 2016 Mass at 9:30 a.m. follow by meeting.

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

As we await Pentecost, the Scriptures this week invite us to

ponder these questions: Are we a community who lives the

love and unity for which Jesus prayed? Are we courageous

witnesses of the risen Jesus and the Holy Spirit? Do we live

as people reborn and refreshed by the life-giving waters of

baptism? How will our baptism make us people of justice and

charity?
