The Second Sunday of Easter
Sunday, April 19th A.D. 2020
+GOD GATHERS US BEFORE HIS HOLY PRESENCE+
PRELUDE
Stand. The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.
INVOCATION
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
EXHORTATION
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Kneel/Stand Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.
CONFESSION
P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.
C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We
have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and
by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we
have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and
eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk
in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
INTROIT Exodus 15:2a, 6, 13, 17–18; antiphon: v. 1b
I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed | gloriously;*
the horse and his rider he has thrown in- | to the sea.
The LORD is my strength | and my song,*
and he has become my sal- | vation.
Your right hand, O LORD, glorious | in power,*
your right hand, O LORD, shatters the | enemy.
You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you | have redeemed;*
you have guided them by your strength to your ho- | ly abode.
You will bring them in and plant them on your own | mountain,*
the place, O LORD, which you have made for | your abode,
the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have es- | tablished.*
The LORD will reign forever and | ever.
Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*
and to the Holy | Spirit;
as it was in the be- | ginning,*
is now, and will be forever. | Amen.
I will sing to the LORD, for he has triumphed | gloriously;*
the horse and his rider he has thrown in- | to the sea.

+GOD SPEAKS TO US IN HIS WORD+ EPISTLE 1 Peter 1:3-9
[“He has caused us to be born again to a living hope.”]
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he
has caused us to be born again to a living
hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead, 4to an inheritance that is
imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept
in heaven for you, 5who by God’s power are
being guarded through faith for a salvation
ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this
you rejoice, though now for a little while, if
necessary, you have been grieved by various
trials, 7so that the tested genuineness of your
faith—more precious than gold that perishes
though it is tested by fire—may be found to
result in praise and glory and honor at the
revelation of Jesus Christ. 8Though you have
not seen him, you love him. Though you do
not now see him, you believe in him and
rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled
with glory, 9obtaining the outcome of your
faith, the salvation of your souls.
A This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God .

HOLY GOSPEL John 20:19-31
[Jesus appears to the disciples and to Thomas.]
P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 20th chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
19On the evening of that day, the first day
of the week, the doors being locked where
the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus
came and stood among them and said to
them, “Peace be with you.” 20When he had
said this, he showed them his hands and his
side. Then the disciples were glad when they
saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again,
“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent
me, even so I am sending you.” 22And when
he had said this, he breathed on them and
said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If
you forgive the sins of anyone, they are
forgiven; if you withhold forgiveness from
anyone, it is withheld.”
24Now Thomas, one of the Twelve,
called the Twin, was not with them when
Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him,
“We have seen the Lord.” But he said to
them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of
the nails, and place my finger into the mark
of the nails, and place my hand into his side,
I will never believe.”
26Eight days later, his disciples were
inside again, and Thomas was with them.
Although the doors were locked, Jesus came
and stood among them and said, “Peace be
with you.” 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put
your finger here, and see my hands; and put
out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not
disbelieve, but believe.” 28Thomas answered
him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Jesus said to
him, “Have you believed because you have
seen me? Blessed are those who have not
seen and yet have believed.”
30Now Jesus did many other signs in
the presence of the disciples, which are not
written in this book; 31but these are written so
that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of God, and that by believing you
may have life in his name.
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.
NICENE CREED
C I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.
