* n.T. TeXT: Luke 1:67-80; Romans 1:18-23Luke 1:67And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit andprophesied, saying, 68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visitedand redeemed his people 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holyprophets from of old, 71 that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; 72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath that he swore to ourfather Abraham, to grant us 74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousnessbefore him all our days. 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of theMost High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to giveknowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit usfrom on high 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadowof death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in thewilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel.

Rom. 1:18 for the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 for what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 for his invisible attributes, namely, hiseternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since thecreation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are withoutexcuse. 21 for although they knew God, they did not honor him as God orgive thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolishhearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal manand birds and animals and creeping things.

THe ReADInG Of THe LAWIn the day you were delivered from the domain of darkness to everlasting life, there was great joy in the presence of God and his angels. (Col 1:13; Lk 15:10) Youhave been called now to glorify God in all of life, knowing and doing hiswill. (1Cor 6:20; Rom 12:1-2) And you will know his will from his perfect and mostprecious law. (Ps 19:7)No. God is judge. Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me andknow my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and leadme in the way everlasting! (Ps 139:23-24)Ex. 20:2 “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

7 “You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for the LORDwill not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.”What is required in the third Commandment? That we must not by cursing,[1] or by false swearing,[2] nor yet by unnecessary oaths,[3] profane or abuse the name of God; nor even by oursilence[4] and connivance be partakers of these horrible sins in others;and in summary, that we use the holy name of God in no other way thanwith fear and reverence,[5] so that He may be rightly confessed[6] and worshiped[7] by us, and be glorified in all our words and works.[8] (Heidelberg Catechism, Q 99)[1] Lev 24:10-17; [2] Lev 19:12; [3] Mt 5:37; Jas 5:12; [4] Lev 5:1; Prov 29:24; [5] Ps 99:1-5; Isa 45:23; Jer 4:2; [6] Mt 10:32-33; Rom 10:9-10; [7] Ps 50:14-15; 1 Tim 2:8; [8] Rom 2:24; Col 3:16-17; 1 Tim 6:1; 1 Pt 3:15

Is the profaning of God’s name, by swearing and cursing, so grievous a sinthat His wrath is kindled against those also who do not help as much as theycan to hinder and forbid it?Yes, truly,[1] for no sin is greater and more provoking to God than theprofaning of His name; wherefore He even commanded it to be punishedwith death.[2] (Heidelberg Catechism, Q 100) [1] Lev 5:1; [2] Lev 19:12, 24:15-16; Prov 29:24-25

But may we swear reverently by the name of God?Yes, when the magistrate requires it, or when it may be needful otherwise, to maintain and promote fidelity and truth to the glory ofGod and our neighbor’s good; for such an oath is grounded in God’sWord,[1] and therefore was rightly used by the saints in the Old and NewTestaments.[2] (Heidelberg Catechism, Q 101)[1] Deut 6:13, 10:20; Isa 48:1; Jer 4:1-2; Heb 6:16; [2] Gen 21:24, 31:53-54; Josh 9:15, 19; 1 Sam 24:22; 1 Kgs 1:29-30; Rom 1:9; 2 Cor 1:23

May we swear by “the saints” or by any other creatures? No, for a lawful oath is a calling upon God, that He, as the only searcherof hearts, may bear witness to the truth, and punish me if I swearfalsely;[1] which honor is due to no creature.[2]. (Heidelberg Catechism, Q 102)[1] Rom 9:1; 2 Cor 1:23; [2] Jer 5:7; Isa 65:16; Mt 5:34-37, 23:16-22; Jas 5:12

THe COnfeSSIOn Of SInYou are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, called to declare the excellenciesof God’s grace. (1Pt 2:9) What have you done? Who had deceived you? Whyhave you fallen from your high station? (2Cor 11:3; Rev 2:5) God made you in hisimage, upright and holy, but you have sinned against him and his law. (Gen 1:26; Eph 4:24) Though he did not spare his own Son, you did not believe that he would graciously give you all things. (Rom 8:32) But now is the day ofrepentance. (Is 55:6) The Lord rebukes and reprimands you because he lovesyou, and if you hear him now and repent, he is faithful and just and will forgive you your sins. (Rev 3:19; 1Jn 1:9)The humbled sinner calls out, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know mythoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in theway everlasting! (Ps 139:23-24)

Does this law absolve you, or condemn you?It condemns me because I have sinned, and am without excuse.(Rom 1:20; 3:23)

Then where is your hope?God the Father predestined me, Jesus paid for my sins with his ownblood, and the Holy Spirit regenerates me. In sum, now I am justifiedby grace alone through faith alone. (eph 1:5; 1Pt 1:19; Rom 3:24,28; Titus 3:5)

How will you now live before God?I recognize my high calling, signed and sealed in my baptism, and willwalk in newness of life, a slave to righteousness, under the sanctifyingwork of the Spirit, thankful to God for His blessings.

(SILenT COnfeSSIOn) PRAYeR Of COnfeSSIOn* DeCLARATIOn Of PARDOn (Absolution of sin) To you who by faith have confessed and repented of your sins, and trusted inJesus’ merit alone, I declare in the Name of Christ and by the authority ofHis Word that your sins are forgiven, the record of your transgressions isblotted away, and your everlasting salvation is hid now in Christ, who willresurrect you in the last day. (1Jn 2:12; Is 43:25; Col 3:3; Jn 6:39)

* O.T. TeXT: Deuteronomy 8Deut. 8:1 “The whole commandment that I command you today you shall becareful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the landthat the Lord swore to give to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember thewhole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in thewilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in yourheart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 And he humbledyou and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does notlive by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouthof the Lord. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did notswell these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplineshis son, the Lord your God disciplines you. 6 So you shall keep the com-mandments of the Lord your God by walking in his ways and by fearing him.7 for the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks ofwater, of fountains and springs, flowing out in the valleys and hills, 8 a landof wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olivetrees and honey, 9 a land in which you will eat bread without scarcity, inwhich you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whosehills you can dig copper. 10 And you shall eat and be full, and you shall blessthe Lord your God for the good land he has given you.

11 “Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today,12 lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and livein them, 13 and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver andgold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart belifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the landof egypt, out of the house of slavery, 15 who led you through the great andterrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty groundwhere there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock, 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. 17 Bewarelest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gottenme this wealth.’ 18 You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he whogives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that heswore to your fathers, as it is this day. 19 And if you forget the Lord yourGod and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnlywarn you today that you shall surely perish. 20 Like the nations that the Lordmakes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obeythe voice of the Lord your God.

* n.T. TeXT: John 6:22-40John 6:22 On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had notentered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone awayalone. 23 Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they hadeaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. 24 So when the crowd sawthat Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boatsand went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him,“Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, Isay to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because youate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but forthe food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.for on him God the father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “Whatmust we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “Thisis the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So theysaid to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness;as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then saidto them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the breadfrom heaven, but my father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 for thebread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to theworld.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shallnot hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said toyou that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the fathergives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will ofhim who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shouldlose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 for this is the will of my father, that everyone who looks on the Son andbelieves in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the lastday.”

LORD’S TABLe (Please respect our policy for participation in the Lord’s Table, printed on theinside front cover. note that cups in the center ring contain grape juice.)

fORMULARYWe read in the Scriptures, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was be-trayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, "This isMy body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me." In the same way Hetook the cup also, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in Myblood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." For as often asyou eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until Hecomes. Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an un-worthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. (1Cor11:23-27)

When our Lord said, Do this in remembrance of me, He ordained this HolySupper as a constant memorial and visible proclamation of His death. As wepartake of this Communion Supper, therefore, we bear witness that our LordJesus was sent by the father into the world, that He took upon Himself our fleshand blood, and that He bore the wrath of God on the cross for us. We alsoconfess that He endured the suffering and death of the cross that we might livethrough Him, and that He was once forsaken by God that we forever be acceptedby Him. The Sacrament thus confirms us in God's abiding love and covenantfaithfulness.

Our Lord promises, moreover, that as we eat the bread and drink the cup, weare fed with His crucified body and shed blood. To this end He gives us His life-giving Spirit, through whom the body and blood of our Lord become life-givingnourishment of our souls. Thus He unites us with Himself and so imparts theprecious benefits of His sacrifice to all who partake in faith.

The Holy Sacrament is also a means of grace that unites us with one another inthe bond of the Spirit. for the Apostle says that we who are many are ... onebody, for we all partake of the one bread (1Cor 10:17). Thus, even as He unitesus with himself, He strengthens the bond between us, His children.

finally, the remembrance of our Lord's death revives in us the hope of hisreturn. Since He commanded us to do this until He comes, the Lord assures usthat He will come again to take us to Himself. Hence, as we commune with Himnow under the veil of these earthly elements, we are assured that we shallsometime behold Him face to face and rejoice in the glory of His appearing.

To celebrate the supper of the Lord properly, it is necessary that we examineourselves as we have been directed.

So, consider your estate if left by yourself in your sins and accursedness, thatyou may abhor yourself and humble yourself before God, knowing that Godought to have punished you in His divine wrath.

Page 9: Lord’s Day Worship Service (9:30) › wp-content › uploads › ...* THe APOSTLeS’ CReeD I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus

Also, examine your own hearts whether you believe this sure promise of Godthat all your sins are forgiven you, only for the sake of the passion and death ofChrist, and that the complete righteousness of Christ is imputed and freely givenyou as your own, so completely that as if you yourself had satisfied God’s wrathfor all your sins and fulfilled all righteousness. Now, unto Him who loves us, and released us from our sins by His blood, andhas made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father; to Him be the gloryand the dominion forever and ever. (Rev 1:5,6) AMEN
