Musings

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, September 22, at 2:00 p.m., in the Heritage Room, is our church’s Charge

Conference. This is the annual meeting, led by our District Superintendent, Roger

Russell, when we elect our new leadership that will serve beginning January 1. Also,

we look at what we have accomplished in 2013, we hear from various leaders in the

church about their area of responsibility as they give an accounting of various aspects of

our church from the building to our membership, set the pastor’s compensation for the

coming year, and Rev. Russell shares with us about what the new year will bring as a

result of decisions made at our Annual Conference session held in June. This meeting is

important as we look at where we are and where we need to go as a church to fulfill the

mission God has for us. I encourage you to come and be a part of this time. (Generally,

the meetings last less than an hour so you won’t miss much football or your Sunday nap

time).

This Sunday, also, during both services, we will be doing something different. Relax, I

know how we don’t like “different” things in our worship, but this one is painless, for the

most part. Several people have shared that we have some new people that they don’t

know. Also, the question has been raised as to whether we can have a brief time, at the

first of the service, when we greet persons sitting near us. So, beginning this Sunday we

will have a time, at the beginning of our services, to greet those around you. This will not

be a long greeting time but a time when you can meet persons that you do not know by

name. Simply turn to those near you and introduce yourself and let them introduce them-

selves to you. I encourage you to use this time as a time to acquaint yourself with our

guests in worship and persons you may have seen before but do not know. It is also a

great opportunity to meet our college students that are attending.

Finally, there are sign-up sheets for various learning and fellowship opportunities so take

a moment as you enter the sanctuary and “sign-up” for one or more of these events.

See you Sunday, Alan

Sign up sheets in Narthex on Sundays. Contact Necia for more information.

Do you know that Habitat for Humanity offers a Minor Home Repair Program for

Jackson and Union counties? The goal is to assist low-income homeowners with help such

as minor repairs on low slope roofs, partial weatherization, and building or repair of small

ramps. The group is currently moving ahead with construction of a home at 2006 Commer-

cial Ave. in Murphysboro. The 2014 project is slated to build a home at 416 East Oak St. in

Carbondale. Habitat welcomes volunteers for the Saturday 8-Noon work sessions!

Do you know 3 billion crayons are produced every year? An estimated 52,000 pounds of

crayons are recycled each year. But about 120,000 pounds of crayons are produced each

day. The paraffin wax in crayons is a petroleum by-product and takes centuries to decom-

pose. You can help prevent the leeching of toxic chemicals by putting broken or unused

crayons in recycling boxes of Re-Star.com. The collection occurs at the Farmers’ Market

and the Food Coop.

Remember the golf scramble will be held this Saturday, September 21, at Jackson County Country Club. We have slots for players, supporters, and volunteers. The proceeds of the scramble will benefit five local food pantries. Thanks for your support.

Health Concerns: Jim Lewis and Tom North are in Barnes Hospital

Welcome to Spencer Austin Hickam, born September 11. He is the son of Ashley & Thomas Hickam, nephew of Madeline & Evie Mullen & Kathryn Burke, grandson of Emily Burke and great grandson of Susan & Mike Burke.

Thank you: The Memorial Committee appreciates the work done by Gary Austin refinishing the altar table that is in the hallway by the Main Street entrance. The dark wood altar table was used in the sanctuary until the wood was changed in 1956 to the lighter color we have now. Then, the table was used in the Parlor (now the Heritage Room) for Sunday morning early services, by the UMW and oth-er services. Please take a minute to admire this piece of our heritage and thank Gary for sharing his talents with our church.

Charge Conference: Sunday, September 22 at 2:00 p.m. in the Heritage/Parlor. All church members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
