Sometimes it seems we have one thing after another and feel like we don’t know whether we are coming or going. Things can get so hectic that we forget, or don’t have time for, some of the parts of our life that keep us balanced. Often, it is not really our fault, it is just how things have a way of happening. It does seem sometimes that if we have one interruption to our reg- ular schedule, we have two or three. What happens after one of these periods in our life is that we can feel worn out and not having much energy to do the things that are important to us. When I have one of these times in my life, I find that the first thing that I slack off on is my daily devotion time. It seems that it is one of those things that I tell myself I will get to later, but I don’t. I suppose it is because there is no one to hold me accountable if I didn’t read scripture or pray as often as I usually do. So, I end up spiritually dry and unmotivated. What often gets me back on track is Sunday worship. There is something about Sunday worship that rids me of all the things that have brought me to my “low” point. There is something special about gathering with a crowd of other Christians, singing hymns, hearing choir anthems, hearing scripture read, and yes, preaching a sermon (sermons are often as much for me as they are for the congrega- tion) that is powerful for me. When I come to worship feeling spiritually dry, I rarely go home with that same feeling. I leave worship feeling better equipped to face a new week with whatever challenges and blessings might be coming. What is more important than that, is that I also find myself focusing on the needs and concerns that others share when we gather to worship. In other words, it isn’t always about “me”, it is about hearing the needs of others around me and knowing that my prayers and concern are of benefit to them. This is what it means to be a part of a church family isn’t it? We come together with whatever joys and concerns we have and we share those with one another. Your joys and concerns become my joys and concerns and vice versa. I have always had a church family as a part of my life ever since I can remember. For those that do not have that I wish they did, because I know how much it can mean. As a pastor, there are times of sadness, struggle, frustration and anxiety just like there is for every- one else. Sunday worship often gets me back on track with my scripture reading and prayer time, that, as I said, is often the first thing I put aside when I am busy. Dear Friends, Life can get busy can’t it. Sometimes it seems we have one thing after another and feel like we don’t know whether we are coming or going. Things can get so hectic that we forget, or don’t have time for, some of the parts of our life that keep us balanced. Often, it is not really our fault, it is just how things have a way of happening. Remember—Bread for the World Sunday is October 21!

FUMC will participate with many other churches in the Bread for the

World Sunday on October 21, 2018. There is a special urgency for

this year’s prayers and actions. Large parts of Africa and some Mid-dle Eastern countries are threatened with near-famine conditions.

The Gospel appointed for October 21 is Mark 10:35-45. BFTW hopes that many churches will join to pray and to act—so that our nation’s leaders put our coun-

try and the world on track toward the goal of ending hunger by 2030. As we work toward the goal, we find strength and hope in accepting Jesus’ invitation that “whoever wishes to

become great among you must become your servant” (Mark 10:43).

Marion Medical Mission (MMM) launched “75 in 75” campaign in the summer. MMM hoped

to fund 75 wells in 75 hours between June 15 and June 18 to celebrate that they were 75 days from

the start of the well season. Two donors were willing to match the first $15,000 of contributions. $15,000 was needed in three days. The campaign did not fund 75 wells. Donors funded over 235

wells in 75 hours. More than 28,000 people will have clean water because of the awesome donors who stepped up and made the weekend full of miracles. Two teams will go to Africa. Team One is

September 16-October 7, and Team Two goes October 7-28. Thirty-five volunteers will make the trip.

Marion Medical Mission Coordinators and Field Officers are the key to who MMM is and what is done.

Because of these workers the MMM infrastructure is the best. MMM covers 57,000 square miles in Ma-lawi, Zambia and Tanzania. The average Field Officer is responsible for 2,580 square miles…on a mo-

torcycle. The Field Officers are expected to supervise the construction of 100 wells each year. Last year, 2,835 wells were built (an average of 142 wells per Field Officer).

In addition, they work with the rural village communities and the Traditional Authorities to select the

villages that will receive wells, help organize each village’s Well Committee, select and certify the well

builders, monitor and evaluate the maintenance and functionality of the wells, conduct yearly Capacity Building workshops and maintenance trainings, and host the U.S. volunteers when they come each

year to verify and survey each well. Check the church bulletin board for the Summer newsletter that describes other accomplishments. FUMC has contributed funds to build several wells for a

number of years. Thanks for your generosity and support.

Margham, Inc. announced that Pastor Arun will visit the U.S. this fall. He will be in Oregon,

Mississippi and Illinois. He will visit Carbondale in early November. If you have an interest in meeting him, contact Darrell Dunham at 549-9800. Margham’s September report can be reviewed on the bul-

letin boards. Dunham plans to return to India with Arun.

An FUMC donor sent $100 to UMCOR’s Where Assistance Is Most Needed project. As

an advance all such funds support programs that fight hunger and poverty, assist the displaced, and respond to disasters. Such funds allow UMCOR to “Be Hope” for those who desperately need it.

Thank you for your support of agencies in our community and across the world.
