Vehicle data networks are primarily software-driven systems with no moving parts. As such, beyond testing harness
integrity, the vast majority of vehicle network diagnostics rely on critical thinking skills and available scan tool testing
capabilities. Network diagnostics are a large subject encompassing many techniques and required knowledge for
each type of network protocol. This will be a quick down and dirty discussion
of the dreaded “U” code.

Congratulations to our Chapter for the most successful meeting in the last couple of decades! I particularly want to thank Kathryn van der Pol for taking care of the arrangements with Richard Flint, and
Nancy Adkins for her tremendous effort (again) to pull together all the stuff needed for our meetings.
We are blessed with many good people who care greatly about our industry and put their efforts into this association to make a difference for all who take part. Next time you see a board member thank them for what they do.
As we begin the New Year I hope that we can attract more such people, both those of you with years and years of experience in the business and those who are just getting started. It is amazing how willing those with the experience are to share that with serious new members.
Over the past few months I have been down with a back problem that made it impossible for me to attend the Chapter meetings and carry out the normal duties of being your President. The board members have stepped up to fill the gap and the group has carried on seamlessly. No one person makes this association work, it is combined effort of many. I will be back into the swing of things as the new year begins and glad to be back!
Each month we hold our board meetings on the first Tuesday of the month at the I-HOP at the corner of I-10 and Washington at 7PM. You are invited to attend and get to know more about how the association works and offer your input as to where you think we should focus our attention.
With oil prices down and interest rates finally inching up, some experts are predicting that car owners will keep their cars longer in the coming year or so. That will provide us with a great opportunity to step up and grow our businesses. There will be challenges for sure, and some of our old business practices may not serve as well as we go forward. Your association will do all it can to stay abreast of the changes and how our members may be able to better face the future. If there is a topic or area that you would like us to look into please let any board member know.
Happy 2016!
Your Editor and Friend,John Miller

Need Energy? Want to feel Passion again? Listen to Richard Flint
Have you ever stared at the pile of papers on your desk and said, “I am too tired to
deal with this?” Or, one of your employees calls in sick and you wonder why am I always having to clean up someone else's mess? Why don't they do what they should do? Why do I resist doing what I should do?
If you've ever found yourself in these situations, last month's meeting provided insight and inspiration.
At our December Meeting, Richard Flint spoke about strengthening our passion. He says, “Passion is more than a love affair for what you are doing with your life. It is the inner battery that recharges your inner spirit from all the challenges, struggles and events that deplete your spirit.”
He is an international speaker who has mentored thousands of clients through his seminars, books, personal coaching and “The Morning Minute.” The Morning Minute delivers a daily video email with an inspiring thought to focus your day and perhaps improve your life. Richard always does it with a smile and a sunrise in the background, and he wears a trademark Hawaiian shirt. Knowing this, several ASA members came to the meeting also wearing a Hawaiian shirt in response. Richard is 70 years old and will be cutting back his rigorous travel schedule in 2016. So it was a great honor to have him come speak to our Association.
At the meeting, Richard discussed what wears people down and makes it challenging to recharge. He is a big believer in using words carefully. For example being “tired” means needing
more energy than you can muster up to deal with what needs your attention. While being “worn down” means your life feels like a flat tire, and you have no spare.
Richard explained that the connection between our thoughts and actions that fuel our passion is fulfillment. When we don't see our lives moving forward we feel lost, and our passion can't be maintained.
He also defined the difference between burnout and flameout. Everyone flames out. It is when the internal fire for what we are doing is not burning brightly, however the flame can still be rekindled. However burnout means the internal fire (passion) is gone; nothing can rekindle the flame. He warned if flameout is not dealt with, then burnout is the result. Flameout can start when we don't tackle issues that we should, when we're tired, when we are bored, when everything looks too difficult, when we are under too much stress. Burnout means that you feel like running away, feeling anger toward your life, a total lack of
creativity or excitement, or you feel upset with what your life has not achieved. He says it is vital to recognize the symptoms of flame-out and face them.
Here are the 7 keys to strengthening one's passion:
Key 1 Pause, reflect, know where you are and continue to push forward. You can't grow all the time. There must be time when you stop and take a break. Think about your journey in life and evaluate if you are on track.
Key 2 Make needed adjustments. Don't get trapped in what Richard calls the “circle of sameness.” In our life we are either moving forward or moving in circles. Without adjustments, we are repeating where we have already been. Passion can't grow in sameness.
Key 3 Keep learning and growing. Don't change. Improve! Self-improvement is a continual process. Improvement is manna for passion.
Key 4 Don't give away control of your life. If you give control of your life to others, your passion diminishes. After all, whose life are you living? If it's not your design, it's not you.
Key 5 Richard teaches that we should not keep people in our life who are not part of our fan club. Include people in your life who believe in

and support you. Don't give others time or space! Passion needs a positive support group. Negative people feed you negative thoughts and doubts.
Key 6 Be honest with yourself and others. Truth must be part of the foundation of strengthening passion.
Key 7 Never run from what you know you must face! Richard says when you avoid what you know you must face, it keeps popping
back up. You have no completion and that is draining. Running away wears you down and steals your energy. Even though facing “what is” can be challenging, dealing with and completing those situations actually recharges you.
One of the concepts that Richard stresses is to make sure your pace is manageable. When our pace is too fast, we say yes to things we shouldn't and we start to lose control
of our life. Lacking a good balance, we lose the fun and we are vulnerable physically and emotionally.
What Richard offers is a philosophy of life that helps you to stay centered and focused. He helps you to remember that life is a great gift and adventure.
It was heartwarming to see over 100 people, many of whom brought their spouses or significant others to the meeting. This was the highest attended meeting of the year and one of the best.

ey Auto Werks has been picked as one of the Ten KBest Websites by ASA National! We are proud to have them as a member of our local chapter. You can
see their site at .http://www.keyautowerks.com/
We all know that the internet has replaced the phone book and has become the number one method that our customers use to find us and in many cases to even call us through web links. Without a first class website we become almost invisible to the public.
Key Auto Werks' site is a great example of how to do it right! There are nine other sites listed there. While I do not endorse plagiarism I would suggest that you spend some time looking these sites over and have whoever does your site maintenance take a look as well. You can do worse than imitate the design efforts of those who have proven successful sites.
KUKUI donated the ASA website and it is a very good site. I would suggest talking with them for ideas about your shop site. See page 2 for their contact information.
To see all of the sites selected by ASA as excellent examples of automotive repair shop websites go to /http://www.autoinc.org/sites-to-see.
Once again congratulations to Key Auto Werks!

“Forget words like 'hard sell' and 'soft sell.' That will only confuse you. Just be sure your advertising is saying something with substance, something that will inform and serve the consumer, and be sure you're saying it like it's never been said before.”
William Bernbach

and relevancy, of course, are as
important as ever, but in the advertising din of today, unless
you make yourself noticed
