Ibn Kathir, in his Urdu Tafseer of verse 67 of Surah Al Baqarah, vol.1, page 129, has said that “Allah (az)

can create any of his Attributes, in anything He wants.”

Allah (az) is the absolute owner of everything, therefore personal powers, merits, knowledge, rights, etc.

of all human beings are 0+0+0.

Allah (az) may, however, bestow some general and specific powers, merits, knowledge and rights to His

Attorneys for use on a variable basis.

All manmade models

(Prophetic Models excluded) are defective, requires change and improvements.

The above principle

also applies to this book and this book is dedicated

to

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) Prophet of the Prophets and Rahmatul lil Alameen

and the Muslim Aulias of Allah (Sufis)

THE AUTHOR

The author was born in India, now Indian Punjab, in August 1936. He migrated to Pakistan in 1947, along with the family. The majority of the people (Muslims) who migrated were in difficulties, but when the family losses the bread winner, it becomes very difficult to pass time. His father died in 1948 hence life became miserable and the hardship faced cannot be properly described in words. He was helped by the other family members.

He appeared in Matriculation examination in 1952 but failed. He tried again and passed the same in 1953. He continued his efforts and was able to earn the followings.

• Master of Business Administration (1969) from the University of the Karachi.

• Fellowship: Cost and Management Accountants Pakistan.

• Fellowship: Institute of Bankers in Pakistan.

• Fellowship: Economic Development Institute of the World Bank, head quartered in Washington D.C. USA.

• Associate ship: Development Financing Institutions in Asia and the Pacific (ADFIAP), head quartered in Manila.

He started his career as a labourer at 8 annas a day (half Rupee) in 1953 and worked in Private and Public sectors up to 1969. After qualifying MBA, he was lucky enough to get a job as a Financial Analyst in First National City Bank, (CityBank). He was able to pursue his career in Banks and related fields. With the blessings of Allah (az) and His Prophet (SAW) he finally rose up to the top position of the Development Bank.

Managing top positions in public sector is very difficult as one has to compromise on many issues, (not allowed as part of official decorum) to accommodate the king makers and their cronies. Life becomes extremely difficult if one is not related to some high-

ranking Government officials or senior politicians. He retired from service in 1997.

He has addressed training sessions on Development Banking for Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank, in various countries. He has also taught the MBA classes at the University level.

He has travelled around the globe and visited 32 countries in four continents. He also saw the seven wonders of the World and was also lucky enough to walk on the China Wall.

He has lived in Indian Punjab in young age and in various cities of Punjab – Pakistan. He moved to Karachi in 1962 and pursued further education from B.Com. onward. He has also lived in Canada for short periods (intermittently) and most of the readings and writing of this book was accomplished there.

He is a not a professional writer. He also lacks in professional English language. This book is his first effort. He typed the book himself on the computer hence the presentation, of the book also lacks professional touch.

Love, Love and Love is the message to lead life successfully. The lesson is that if one starts the journey and follows it on with sincere efforts, clean heart and with good intention ‘niat’ then one would reach the destination one day.

PREAMBLE

I am a simple Muslim and do not belong to any sect. I have not attended any religious school. I respect everybody and believe that all of us will be rewarded in this world and more particularly in the hereafter according to one universal principle “As you sow, so shall you reap”. I have no enemies.

While living in Toronto Canada I felt that I should improve my knowledge of ‘Deen’ Islam beyond its five tenants. This necessity was realised as I could not answer many questions from Muslims and Non-Muslims

I started reading Quran followed by ahadith and some other books, to understand the correct path of Islam, especially in some controversial areas. In writing this book I have reviewed the books mentioned in the List of References. The books on Saudi History were also reviewed.

MISSION OF THIS BOOK

The writers on Islam, particularly in Pakistan, have produced a variety of books in Urdu and the use of such books is limited because Urdu is not an international language. It was therefore thought prudent to produce a book in English, which could be used internationally. The book will:

1. Add knowledge of ‘Deen’ Islam for some. 2. Revise knowledge of ‘Deen’ Islam for some. 3. Reinforce confidence for some in ‘Deen’ Islam. 4. The knowledge in this book may help reconcile the

differences among various Muslim groups.

What has been written in this book do not represent any of the sects of Islam. Some of the observations made during the study and writing of this book are mentioned below.

RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER

The search for the right path has revealed that various groups curse each other. Some even label the others as infidel. A verse from our Quran along with a hadith are quoted below for the benefit of the readers.

Surah Al An’am (6): 108. And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allah, lest they insult Allah wrongfully without knowledge. ## This concept has also to be used by Muslims insulting all others.

Volume 8, Book 73, Number 71: Narrated Abu Dhar: That he heard the Prophet saying, "If somebody accuses another of Fusuq (by calling him 'Fasiq' i.e. a wicked person) or accuses him of Kufr, such an accusation will revert to him (i.e. the accuser) if his companion (the accused) is innocent." (Bukhari) (Fusuq=disobedient to God).

RIVALRY AMONG MUSLIM LEADERS

Some groups of Muslims curse each other, particularly in India and Pakistan. They do not realise that all human beings will account for their deeds in the hereafter. They do not discuss and teach each other but prefer to curse them. Allah (az) has created a disparity in bestowing all the resources including Rizk, Knowledge, Bounty (‘Fazal’) etc on a variable basis to all human beings. He has however controlled the Guidance “Hydiat” and it is not available to everybody. Please enjoy the message of Allah (az) as contained in Quran.

Surah An Nahl (16) 71. And Allah has preferred some of you above others in wealth and properties. … Do they then deny the Favour of Allah?

Surah Ale Imran (3): 26. Say [O Muhammad (SAW)]: "O Allah! Possessor of the kingdom, You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You take the kingdom from whom You will, and You endue with honour whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will. In Your Hand is the good. Verily, You are Able to do all things.

Surah Yusuf (12): 56. Thus did We give full authority to Yusuf (Joseph) in the land, to take possession therein, as when or where he likes. We bestow of Our Mercy on whom We please, and We make not to be lost the reward of Al-Muhsinun. Surah Al Jathiyah (45): 13. And has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth; it is all as a favour and kindness from Him. Verily, in it are signs for a people who think deeply.

The evidence that Allah (az) has subjected what is in between the heavens and the earth to His people could be appreciated from an action taken by Hazrat Umar (ra). The hadith is long but a short version of the same is quoted below. Narrated by Hazrat Ali (ra): River Nile in Egypt was disturbing people through flooding. Hazrat Umar (ra), the second Caliph wrote a letter to River Nile in Egypt and the river started flowing normally. (internet: amazonint.in and islamqa.info)

KNOWLEDGE GAP On the pattern of other resources, Allah (az) has also created knowledge gap among His human beings. Please enjoy the following verses from Quran. Surah Al Mu’min (40) 15. (He is Allah) Owner of High Ranks and Degrees, the Owner of the Throne. He sends the Inspiration by His

Page 10: As you sow, so shall you reapvoiceofmuslims.net/Book/Introduction.pdf · As you sow, so shall you reap ii Ibn Kathir, in his Urdu Tafseer of verse 67 of Surah Al Baqarah, vol.1, page

x

Command to any of His slaves He wills, that he (the person who receives inspiration) may warn (men) of the Day of Mutual Meeting. Surah Al Mujadilah (58) 11. … Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe and those who have been granted knowledge. And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do. Surah Al Baqarah (2) 105 (Part) But Allah chooses for His Mercy whom He wills. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty. Surah Al Muddathir (74) 31: ….. Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. My personal observations are that there are many reasons for the differences among Muslims but five (5) are the most important. It may appear harsh on some Muslim Scholars and Leaders as Islam has been controlled by them directly and indirectly, through personalized education systems. I am not a Mufti and what I am saying is not a Fatwa; it is my conviction which I have formed after reading the Quran, Ahadith and other books forming the List of References. The main differences are on account of the followings.

1. Four verses quoted above. 2. Communication gap – transmission of knowledge

over a period time. 3. Exoteric and esoteric aspects of Islamic knowledge. 4. Personal prejudices and interpretation of the Quran

and Ahadith. 5. Foreign influence permeated through corruption.

I am open for change and invite educated scholars to guide me

to the correct path of Islam.

Surah Ale Imran (3) 105. And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment.

PROBLEMS

Noted with Translation of Quran

This book has used the Noble Quran translated into English by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, Ph.D. and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan published by Dar-us-Salam Publications. The translators of the Nobel Quran have added some material in brackets changing the scope and meanings of many verses. One example is cited below.

Verse 19 of Surah Al Hadid (57)

Noble Quran Tafsir ibn Kathir

“ And those who believe in (the Oneness of) Allah and His Messengers, they are the Siddiqun (i.e. those followers of the Prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them), and the martyrs with their Lord, they shall have their reward and their light.

“And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers they are the Siddiqun (true believers) and the martyrs with their Lord. They shall have their reward and their light.”

Book 25, Number 3644: Narrated Jundub: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “if anyone interprets the Book of Allah in the light of his opinion, even if he is right, he has erred”. (Sunan Abu Dawud). Dr. Israr Ahmad (rta) a prominent Muslim Scholar from Pakistan has claimed that the status of Siddiquns, Martyrs, etc is still open for the Muslims. He has stated this as part of Tafsir of verse 57:19. Maulana Slahuddin Yusuf, Saudi Tafsir writer (Urdu) of verse 57:19 has also said that “seekers of truth and those who are busy in finding the truth are included in the category of Siddiquns. It is worth noting that Muslims could be divided into two main groups (a) Sahabas of the time of Prophet (SAW) and (b) non-Sahabas (all other Muslims). It is clear that nobody could be equal to the Sahabas of the time of our Prophet (SAW). However, there are

Page 12: As you sow, so shall you reapvoiceofmuslims.net/Book/Introduction.pdf · As you sow, so shall you reap ii Ibn Kathir, in his Urdu Tafseer of verse 67 of Surah Al Baqarah, vol.1, page

xii

grades in each category and non Sahabas (Muslims) could acquire lower grades compared to the Sahabas of the time of our Prophet (SAW). Surah Ale Imran (3) 31. Say [O Muhammad (SAW) to mankind]: "If you (really) love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." How high could be the status of an individual whom Allah (az) loves? Allah (az) says: he speaks with My tongue in this world and he will be with those mentioned in the following verse from Quran. Surah An Nisa (4) 69. And whoso obeys Allah and the Messenger [Muhammad (SAW)], then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqun, the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are!

PROBLEMS WITH AHADITH

There are similar problems with ahadith and a hadith about the age of Hazrat Aisha (raa), the beloved wife of our Prophet (SAW) and mother of all Muslims, is quoted below. The research carried out by Islamic Research Foundation International states that the age of Hazrat Aisha (raa), at the time of her marriage consummation was about 17-18 years and not 9 years as stated in the hadith books. This also reflects on the reliability of many ahadith. There are many ahadith on innovations ‘Bidats’ and also a hadith on starting some good new things in Islam. Please review the following hadith.

Page 13: As you sow, so shall you reapvoiceofmuslims.net/Book/Introduction.pdf · As you sow, so shall you reap ii Ibn Kathir, in his Urdu Tafseer of verse 67 of Surah Al Baqarah, vol.1, page

2684. Sayyidina Jarir ibn Abdullah (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “If anyone initiated a good practise and is followed them, then he has a reward for it which is equal to the rewards of those who follow him without reducing anything from their rewards. And if anyone initiates an evil practice and is followed therein then he has a sin for it like the sins of those who followed him without reducing anything from their sins.” [Ahmed 19177, Muslim 1017, Ibn Majah 203, Nisai 2553] (Jamia Tirmidhi Sunan)

STATUS OF THE LIARS

Quran

Surah Al Bagarah (2):10. In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies.

Hadith

Volume 8, Book 73, Number 118: Narrated Samura bin Jundub: The Prophet said, "I saw (in a dream), two men came to me."

Then the Prophet narrated the story (saying), "They said, 'The person, the one whose cheek you saw being torn away (from the mouth to the ear) was a liar and used to tell lies and the people would report those lies on his authority till they spread all over the world. So he will be punished like that till the Day of Resurrection."' (Bukhari)

HADITH ON FUTURE OF ISLAM

The Centre of Islam “moved (from Madina) to Damascus to Baghdad and to Cairo. Out of the Desert had come the faith and the driving force, but Arabia having given birth to these, sank back

Page 14: As you sow, so shall you reapvoiceofmuslims.net/Book/Introduction.pdf · As you sow, so shall you reap ii Ibn Kathir, in his Urdu Tafseer of verse 67 of Surah Al Baqarah, vol.1, page

xiv

into its old state. Once more it became a land of ignorance and violence, shut off from the outside world.” (Lord of Arabia, page 13) Book 1, Number 0271: It is narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Umar ('Abdullah b. 'Umar) that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) observed: Verily Islam started as something strange and it would again revert (to its old position) of being strange just as it started, and it would recede between the two mosques just as the serpent crawls back into its hole. (Muslim)

DETERIORATION OF PRACTICES

Some ahadith mention that deterioration had started immediately after the death of our Prophet (SAW). This was also one of the reasons for the differences of opinion among Muslims and the same have been aggravated over time. Volume 1, Book 10, Number 507: Narrated Ghailan: Anas said, "I do not find (now-a-days) things as they were (practiced) at the time of the Prophet." … Narrated Az-Zuhri that he visited Anas bin Malik at Damascus and found him weeping and asked him why he was weeping. He replied, "I do not know anything which I used to know during the life-time of Allah's Apostle except this prayer which is being lost (not offered as it should be)." (Bukhari)

Volume 1, Book 11, Number 622: Narrated Salim: I heard Um Ad-Darda' saying, "Abu Ad-Darda' entered the house in an angry mood. I said to him. 'What makes you angry?' He replied, 'By Allah! I do not find the followers of Muhammad doing those good things (which they used to do before) except the offering of congregational prayer." (This happened in the last days of Abu Ad-Darada’ during the rule of ‘Uthman) (Bukhari).

THESIS ON LIFE

Imam Muhammad Ash - Shukani (rta) (1759 -1834) is reported to have said that human life starting from the first material birth (of Insan) continues into the Barzakh (Faith ul Bari). (30:55-56)

On the other hand Saudi Tafseer written by Maulana Slahuddin Yusuf has rejected the thesis of Imam Shukani (rta). (The reference is available in chapter IV on Insan and Islam). His main argument is that dead persons are moved to Barzakh hence there is no life.

NICE TO KNOW

A note from the Saudi History is being quoted below for the benefit of the readers.

“Millions of Muslims, including many Saudis, see the seventh century, when Islam grew so rapidly as a golden age when saints ruled the world, a utopia that they want to restore.” (Prophets and Princes, page 9).

Book 35, Number 6473: Hammam b. Munabbih reported so many ahadith from Abu Huraira and one out of them is this that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said that Allah thus stated:

• When My servant draws close to me by the span of a palm, I draw close to him by the space of a cubit, and

• When he draws close to Me by the space of a cubit, I draw close to him by the space (covered) by two hands, and

• When he draws close to Me by the space (covered by) two hands, I go in hurry towards him. (Muslim)

Another hadith from Bukhari Volume 8, Book 76, Number 509 included in chapter I on Spiritual Entertainment provides evidence on the status of the true believers where Allah (az) says: I become his (believers) tongue with which he speaks.

Page 16: As you sow, so shall you reapvoiceofmuslims.net/Book/Introduction.pdf · As you sow, so shall you reap ii Ibn Kathir, in his Urdu Tafseer of verse 67 of Surah Al Baqarah, vol.1, page

(4204). Abu Hurayrah (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “The person who obeys me has obeyed Allah (az). The person who disobeys me has disobeyed Allah (az). The person who obeys my Imam has obeyed me, and the person who disobeyed my Imam has disobeyed me.” (Sunan Nasai) (2935) Sayyidina Abu Sa’eed reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAW) narrated: The Lord, Blessed and High, says, “He whom the Quran keeps occupied from My remembrance and from supplicating Me, (must know that) I grant him better than that which I give the supplicants. And the excellence of Allah’s words over all other expressions is like the excellence of Allah over His creation” (Jamia Tirmidhi Sunan)

ISLAMIC EDUCATION SYSTEM There are a number of Public and Private Universities in Muslim countries. It is important to note that none of the Universities including the Universities in Pakistan are part of the list of top 100 Universities of the world. (Daily Dunia Newspaper October 31, 2015, front page). In Pakistan there are a large number of Islamic private educational institutions known as Madrassas which normally teach a syllabus of a particular Aqeeda / faith. The example of these Madrassas, with some exceptions, can be cited with an example of a ‘Kohloo’ an oil extraction Mills from canola seeds and the ox used in the ‘Kohloo’. The machine is fixed at a place and is driven by the ox. The ox is blind folded, who would move on a fixed circle path around the ‘Kohloo’. My impression about the education provided by these Madrassas, perhaps with some exceptions, is on the pattern of ‘Kohloo’ operation. There is a need for improvement in the education system of these Madrassas.

LANGUAGE OF THE BOOK

Some friends in Toronto suggested that if an effort is to be made to explain some important concepts pertaining to the differences, then English (International language) may be used to describe the same. It may be mentioned here that translation from Urdu into English, for various ahadith and other material, included in this book, was performed by the author himself. The translation may contain errors and omissions and the same are regretted in advance.

CONFERENCES ON ISLAM I have attended four (4) International Conferences on Islam while

stationed in Toronto Canada. These conferences were addressed

by scholars from all over the world including India (Dr. Zakir Naik)

but there was none from Pakistan.

In one of the conferences attended on commemoration of Khawaja

Muenuddin Chisti Ajmeri (rta) from India, the main speaker on Sufism was

from Tunisia. I have not heard any comparable scholar in Pakistan.

Pakistani Mufti however recited ‘Naats’, praise of our Prophet (SAW).

TYPE, FONT AND PAPER SIZE The book has used Arial and its Font 12. However, in order to avoid the headings appearing towards the end of a page, some paragraphs on that particular page, were replaced with Font 10, 11 and line spacing with 1.15. The paper size of book is 23 x 16 cm. The margins are: Top 2.5 cm., bottom 1.5 cm., left 2.5 cm. and the right 1 cm.

Page 18: As you sow, so shall you reapvoiceofmuslims.net/Book/Introduction.pdf · As you sow, so shall you reap ii Ibn Kathir, in his Urdu Tafseer of verse 67 of Surah Al Baqarah, vol.1, page

xviii

The book has been typed by me. I have not received formal computer education hence there were problems on balancing each page of the book.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

(1). Each chapter starts with heading “Without Comments” material picked up from our Quran, Hadith books or other published sources. This material has important connection with the chapter title or the discussion in the chapter. (2) Similarly, each chapter starts with odd page number, so where the chapter discussion ended with odd page number, the next even page was used to include material from Quran or Hadith book and it has been named as “Bonus”. There are in all eight (8) Bonuses in the book. (3) I have used the word “vignette” in this book which means “short description”.

MY BELIEF My research placed in this book and the lecture of the Tunisian Speaker, heard in Toronto Canada, have influenced me a lot and I now believe that Sufism is based on true ‘Deen’ Islam. It may be mentioned that the first man and the first Messenger of Allah (az), first husband, first father and first father in law [Hazrat Adam (as)] was also a Sufi.

BOOKS AND MATERIAL REVIEWED

It should be noted that: Chapters III, VI, VII, VIII, X, XI and XII of this book are based on Questions and Queries raised by:

2. The Jamaat Tableegh and the Deobandis written by honourable Sajid Abdul Kayum

3. Two writers (most probably Arabs) have written against Sufism. The title of the articles is “the Reality of Sufism” and the title of the second writer is “the other side of the Sufism.” (The details of the writers are available in the reference list)

4. Some other small booklets by different scholars.

against the aqeedas and practices of the Bareilawis and the Jamaat Tableegh and the Deobandis.

After reading the books and the material from the abovementioned sources, it is clear that the friend believe that there is no life in Barzakh and that Sufism has corrupted Islam. It is mentioned for information that chapters: Critique on Barzakh (6) and Critique on some Attributes of our Prophet (SAW) (12) are worth reading. Please enjoy:

Ibn Kathir, in his Urdu Tafseer of verse 67 of Surah Al Baqarah, vol.1, page 129, has said that “Allah (az)

can create any of his Attributes, in anything He wants.”

SIKHISM AND SUFISM

Sikh is a nation which originated from India. They are perhaps not Muslims. They respect Sufism. A story from internet is placed below for the benefit of the readers. The material available in the internet lacks copy and paste facility.

It has been reported that a Sikh family of Guru deb Singh has reconstructed / renovated the tomb of Hazrat Noor Shah Jamal, a Muslim Sufi, in Hoshiarpur India and he is looking after the annual fairs and other activities. Who is right and who is wrong?

FINAL POSITION

All human beings will be rewarded for their deeds done by them in this material world but the entry in to the Paradise will be subject to the bounty and grace of Allah (az). Please enjoy the following verses and the hadith.

Quran

Surah Al Zalzalah (99) 6. That Day mankind will proceed in scattered groups that they may be shown their deeds. 7. So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it. 8. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it.

Hadith

Volume 7, Book 70, Number 577: Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise." (i.e., None can enter Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet's companions) said, 'Not even you, O Allah's Apostle?' He said, "Not even myself, unless Allah bestows His favor and mercy on me." So be moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability: and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to Allah." I am grateful to Syed Muhammad Wasaf, my neighbour in Karachi. He is M.Sc. in Accounting from England and very clear headed young man especially in his personal aqeeda of Islam. He has provided me professional support in selecting the authors to be studied. I have benefitted a lot from the intellectual discussion held with him.

He has also helped me in writing this book on the computer and he was usually available on a very short notice. By the grace of Allah (az) he has migrated to Canada. I wish him success.

_________________________________ I am also grateful to Dr. Shaikh Maqbool Ahmad Makki, Chief Editor, Us’va-e-Ha’sanah, Jamia Abibakr Islamia, Gulsha-e-Iqbal, Block 5, Karachi.

He has also been my teacher for Arabic Language. The doctor has also helped me in providing clarifications and references for some of the difficult

topics encountered by me in writing this book.

____________________________________ I am also grateful to Mr. Iqbal Azad, my oldest ex colleague and very good professional friend. He purchased some of the books from abroad and brought to Pakistan for writing this book. He has served the Islamic Development Bank. I wish, I were like him.

_________________________________ Lastly, I would like to record that all the family members, who, despite the fact that my wife was suffering from paralyses and confined to bed, spared me from all possible family shores. My daughter Naheed Aslam looked after me as also the ailing mother, besides managing the family shores. They all helped me physically, financially and morally.

My grandson Mr. Waqar ul Hassan has also been very kind. He created a Web Site for this book known as themuslimsvoice.net on the internet. My e.mail address is [email protected]

Lastly, there is only one authority (Allah), Who has always been very kind, especially in taking up a stand (during active

service) on controversial subjects. The blessings of our Prophet (SAW) have also been with me 24 hours of the day

and night.
