SETTING OF THE PLAY

• “As You Like It” is set in France in the sixteenth century. It accentuates the complications and problems of being uprooted from a specific household and the hardships that are faced with.

• The play will take place on a thrust stage, specifically an Elizabethan playhouse.

• Two essential sets: • The French court• The forest of Arden

SHAKESPEARE’S PLAY, “AS

YOU LIKE IT.” THE

AUDIENCE IS ON THE

THREE SIDES. THIS STAGE

HAD DOORS AT THE REAR

OF THE STAGE FOR

ENTRANCES AND EXITS AS

WELL AS AN UPPER LEVEL

FOR THE BALCONY.

Court SettingWhen the audience enters the theater they will be

welcomed with the harsh hierarchical patriarchy of the

usurped court setting.

The setting is cold, bleak, and dreary consisting

silhouettes that were Russian style in the stage.• Silhouettes are painted with dark black colors with

silver edges to capture the light

Setting is lifeless and colorless, which is carefully chosen

to portray the lifestyle and environment of the Court.• The setting establishes the mood as serious, somber,

and humorless.

The level of the stage balcony is always in-

sight and placed in full-view of the audience

The set is full of vibrant colors and lights.

Transition between the court to the forest is

one of darkness to luminous and grimness to

lushness.

The environment of the forest is not

concealed nor hidden away from the audience.
