he Formula 1 circus heads to the iconic sweeping turns of Suzuka with two intriguing story lines set to play out this weekend.
The last round in Singapore provided a pivotal moment in the championship as Lewis Hamilton opened up a three point advantage at the top of the standings by claiming an impressive victory, while title rival Nico Rosberg suffered a rare retirement.
Victories in Monza and Singapore has turned the championship battle between the warring Mercedes duo of Hamilton and Rosberg on its head, with the Brit seemingly now holding the momentum.
It was only a few weeks ago that Rosberg appeared to be sitting pretty with a 29 point lead following the controversial Belgian Grand Prix.
With Hamilton in his stride, the onus is on Rosberg to produce a reaction to show he is prepared to dig deep and fight for the 2014 title.
While the championship fight is simmering nicely, the story which threatens to steal the limelight is that of teenage sensation Max Verstappen, who
will become the youngest driver to take part in a F1 session this weekend.
The 17-year-old, who is set to replace Jean-Eric Vergne at Toro Rosso in 2015, will take over the Frenchman’s car for Friday’s opening Free Practice session as he continues to gear up for his maiden F1 season next year.
Verstappen’s promotion to the pinnacle of motorsport after just one season of car racing has sparked plenty of debate as to whether this is a smart move from the team and for the sport.
Only time will tell if Toro Rosso’s risk will turn into reward and Friday’s outing should provide a brief glimpse into the not too distant future.

Round 15 - Japanese Grand Prix I Editorial
e is not yet old enough to hold a driving licence and is already being compared to Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna.
Dutch teenage sensation Max Verstappen has emerged as the sport’s next bright star having whisked his way onto the world motorsport map in his debut season of car racing, resulting in a promotion to the hallowed F1 paddock with Toro Rosso.
Its been an unprecedented turn of events for the 17-year-old, who was an unknown at the start of the year, with his illustrious family name the only hint at what lies beneath the young flying Dutchman.
This time last season the son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen was celebrating a World KZ Karting title, now he is preparing to make his grand prix event debut with Toro Rosso in Free Practice at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.
“It is good preparation for next year, even if it’s not something I could have imagined a few months ago,” said Verstappen ahead
Max Factor: The arrival of Formula 1’s next superstar?H
of his first official F1 outing.“To already be participating in a practice
session is of course a dream come true.“My dad has raced at Suzuka many times and
he told me it’s not an easy track to start on.“For me it will be a very valuable
experience, spending some time in the car and also getting used to working with everyone in the team, to prepare myself for next year.
“I am not going there to break any records, I just want to gain experience.”
Toro Rosso’s decision to promote Verstappen to the 2015 race seat in favour of Jean-Eric Vergne has created plenty of headlines with the teenager yet to complete a season of car racing, having only graduated from karts to the FIA European F3 Championship this year.
Verstappen’s rapid rise to prominence will see him become the youngest driver to race in F1. This inexperience coupled with the mental aptitude required to survive in the cut throat world of F1 has led several experts to question if he is ready to make the giant leap, and whether it is safe for
him to do so. At the time of the announcement, the
racing rookie had never driven an F1 car. Since then he has racked up 400km in a 2012 specification Toro Rosso at Italy’s Adria circuit, following an embarrassing shunt behind the wheel of the machine during a street demonstration in his native Rotterdam.
He has also completed several sessions in Red Bull’s state-of-the-art simulator along with two Formula Renault 3.5 tests.
However, Red Bull’s head of driver development Helmut Markko is a firm believer in Verstappen having played a key role in recruiting the teenager to join Toro Rosso.
Markko has helped uncover the likes of four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and current Red Bull star Daniel Ricciardo and believes in Verstappen he has found yet another gem.
Last week he heaped praise on the teenage star comparing him to the great three-time world champion Ayrton Senna in an interview with the official Formula 1 website.

“Most likely Ayrton Senna,” said Marko, when asked to compare the teenager to another driver.
“And in such a case you must not look at his age.
“He has been talking with people who are experts when it comes to the development of youngsters and they all say that (in terms of ) his mind he is more like 22 than 16.
“And regarding his skills behind the steering wheel, he has been racing since he was four years old – professionally.
“So we expect him to be competitive from the first race.
“We are not playing the lottery – we know what we are doing. And success proves us right.
“He is an exceptional talent that comes along only once in decades.”
Considering Verstappen has competed in just 40 car races in his entire career, the comments speak volumes in regard to his perceived potential.
Although he is relatively unproven, it is fair to say that the signs of a future star have begun to emerge after recording eight victories in the highly competitive FIA European Formula 3 championship.
Lying second in the standings, he could yet go on to win the title in his maiden season, an impressive feat in itself.
There is no substitute for experience but F1 in the past has proved there are exceptions to the rule with these anomalies often transforming into superstars.
When Verstappen makes his F1 race debut in Melbourne next year he will have completed just 46 races outside of karts.
To put this into context, Vettel made his
debut in 2007 at BMW with 94 races under his belt, while Verstappen’s new Toro Rosso team-mate Daniil Kvyat racked up 147 starts before his maiden grand prix this year.
In sport, there are always those standout individuals that defy rules once perceived as gospel and F1 is no different.
After just 40 competitive outings in British Formula Ford and British Formula 3, Sir Frank Williams fast tracked a then 20-year-old Jenson Button to the big time in 2000. He quickly adapted to the stresses, strains and workings of F1 with ease before going on to become a world champion in 2009.
Arguably the best driver on the grid, double world champion Fernando Alonso surpassed Button’s stats by making his F1 debut at Minardi having completed just 24 races. The Spaniard suitably inpressed in a underfunded and underpowered Minardi, which saw him catch the eye of the Renault squad.
His Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen entered the category straight from Formula Renault with just 23 races under his belt. The Finn has claimed 20 race wins along with the 2007 title once again proving if the talent is there experience isn’t a crucial factor.

Round 15 - Japanese Grand Prix I Cover Story
The Japanese Grand Prix will forever hold happy memories for Damon Hill after victory secured him his only world title in 1996.
Suzuka hosted the final round of the championship with the title battle going down to the wire between the Williams duo of Hill and Jacques Villeneuve. The Canadian rookie needed to win the race and for Hill not to finish in the points to wrestle the title away from the Brit.
Qualifying was dominated by Villeneuve who claimed pole by almost half a second
from his title rival Hill, with Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher well positioned in third.
Following an aborted start caused by McLaren’s David Coulthard, Hill took the lead while a slow starting Villeneuve slipped down the order to sixth.
Benetton’s Gerhard Berger followed Hill in the early laps but he was soon forced into the pits after damaging his front wing while trying an audacious pass at the chicane.
Hill soon galloped into the lead which he
kept after the pit stops.Meanwhile, Villeneuve had progressed
up to fourth but his title bid soon came to a dramatic end. On lap 37 his right rear wheel came loose from his car sending him into the gravel trap.
Villeneuve’s retirement effectively handed Hill the title.
In the end, Hill wrapped up the title in style by securing his eighth win of the season as he finished ahead of Schumacher and McLaren’s Mika Hakkinen.

SUZUKA CIRCUIT GUIDETrack Conditions
The circuit is used fairly regularly
throughout the year by a variety of different motorsport categories, placing track evolution around the middle of the scale at around two seconds per lap between Friday practice and qualifying.
Venue Peculiarities
Japan is one of the toughest locations of
the season for the teams in terms of the offset hours, which are tricky to get to grips with. For those working back at the factories in Brackley and Brixworth in particular, effectively adjusting to a night shift for the week inevitably puts a strain on the body.
Suzuka itself is the only circuit on the calendar to run in a figure-of-eight configuration, with the run between Turns 14-15 crossing over that of Turns 9-10. The distribution between left (8) and right (10) turns around the track is well-balanced, leading to relatively equal tyre wear on each side of the car.
There are also a lot of elevation changes - the most significant of which begins on the run out of Turn 1 and continues all the way up through the ‘S’ curves towards the Dunlop Curve at Turn 7.
Climate Suzuka regularly sees significant shifts in
weather patterns - not necessarily across a race weekend, but certainly from year to year. While ambient temperatures tend to remain between 23-25 degrees, track temperatures have historically varied from 25-38 degrees.
This is due to the ever-changing cloud cover above the circuit. Rain is not uncommon, with the muggy conditions regularly leading to quite intense thunderstorms overnight and often into the following day. When it rains in Suzuka, it really rains - demonstrated by the infamous pit lane boat races, as last seen in 2010.
Tyres
Suzuka sits towards the upper end of the
scale in terms of tyre energy. There is a lot of high-speed content around the lap, starting with the ‘S’ curves - which stand as one of the most historic sequences of corners in the world, similar in style to Eau Rouge.
Each corner builds on the other through here, putting a lot of energy through the tyres. As per 2013, it is for this reason that the hard and medium compounds are nominated for this race.
These compounds have proven to be very predictable this season and, as such, a similar trend in pit stops can be expected.
In 2013, a mixture of two and three stop strategies came into play, with the majority of the front-runners opting for the former.
Overtaking
Conversely to the last race in Singapore,
Suzuka presents a number of good passing opportunities. The most popular locations tend to be the first corner and then under braking into the final chicane.
Although overtaking is possible, it is far from simple - often forcing the drivers to produce some spectacular manoeuvres. Watching two cars run side by side through the opening bend, or lining up a move out of130R and into the final chicane, is highly entertaining to watch.
Safety Cars On the surface, the Suzuka circuit would
not seem to lend itself to a high Safety Car probability. However, only the 2013 Japanese Grand Prix has not featured the Safety Car since the race returned to the circuit in 2009.
As one of the ‘old school’ circuits on the calendar, run-off areas largely consist of grass, gravel and tyre walls. Coupled with the high-speed track layout, this generally means that any accident which does occur will frequently result in the race being neutralised. The tight first corner is another contributing factor, with contact between cars a regular occurrence on the first lap in particular.
