to6 THE SLAVONIC REVIEW.

From the Russian of LERMONTOV.

Translated by WV. A. Morison.

"As soon as night her velvet cover Upon Caucasian peaks has spread, And earth its murmuring gives over, Enchanted, now the spell is said; WNhen on the cliff the night-wind lingers, And grass-tufts stir their faded fingers, And in its little lair the lark Flutters with gladness in the dark; As soon as, hidden in a bower Of vine-shoots, to the dewy shower The flowers of night their blooms unfold; As soon as e'er a moon of gold Swims up beyond the nmountain, peeping With half-shy eyes upon thee, sleeping- To thee I'll wing my way aloft, Stay till the east with morning flashes, And on the silk of thy soft lashes Dreams golden-textured gently waft. .

(" The Demoii.")

WHY, 0 WILLOW ?

From the Russian of FEDOR TYUTCHEV.

Translated by W. A. Morisonl.

Why, 0 willow, to the river Leans thy head low, and why Dost thou with long leaves that tremble, And that thirsty lips resemble, Catch the ripples dancing by? Though thy leaflets faint and quiver, Mirrored in the fleeting stream, Yet the current speeds and splashes, In caressing sunshine flashes, And but mocks thy empty dream.
