1. Burnt Offering: The Art of the Imperfect at The Gallery at NBCCD until Mar 5

The Gallery at NBCCD presents Burnt Offering: The Art of the Imperfect until March 5, 2015. This is an exhibit of works by designer and Fashion Design instructor, Mark Chilton.

Burnt Offering explores the potential for hand craft to challenge conventional notions of clothing through the manipulation of form and fabric with pleating, distressing, dyeing, cutting and waxing; combining formal and textiles experimentation to reconsider conventions in men's clothing. The work is aligned most closely with a Japanese sensibility of Wabi-sabi; the notion that impermanence and imperfection are desirable attributes, to be celebrated rather than overcome. This approach to production attempts to elevate the imprecise human touch, highlighting the individuality of each garment and displacing the dominant reading of clothing as commodity, allowing the artistry of the craft to emerge.

Wed to this productive impulse for imprecision is an interest in reconsidering the forms and conventions of early 20th Century Western menswear - suit jackets, train conductor trousers, aprons, vests, morning coats. The predominant use of traditional heavy cotton canvas, jean and wools - albeit reinterpreted through the manipulation of finishes - reinforces this nod to the past, lending particular focus to the influence of work wear on the collection.

The Gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday 9am to 4:30pm, and by appointment. Back to top.

8. The UNB Deparment of English Colloquium Series presents The Pound Industry Feb 20 On Friday, February 20, 2015 at 3:30pm in Tilley Hall, Room 5 PhD Candidate Svetlana Nedeljkov presents The Pound Industry: Literature is News that Stays News. Ezra Pound devoted his life to writing, translating, and “EZucating” those willing to be initiated to new, modernist techniques and methods. Pound was also a poet of megalomaniacal ideas, believing that he could better the world by educating “the nation.” His fixation with sociopolitical matters, which became inescapably obvious in the broadcasts over Rome Radio in the early 1940s, remains a recurring motif not only in his letters but also in the rest of his work; moreover, it reflects his anti-Semitic, fascist, racial, and economic views. While Pound’s innovative ideas established him as one of the leading modernists and helped shape the movement in the early twentieth century, the controversy behind his sociopolitical views, trial, and subsequent imprisonment has greatly affected the state of scholarship devoted to the poet. This paper explores the “Pound enterprise,” to use Donald Davie’s term, and elucidates the implications that Pound's questionable positions have had for the scholarly evaluation of his work. 12. NB Film Co-op’s Monday Night Film Series presents Gemma Bovery Feb 23

February 23, 2015 - 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Gemma Bovery Anne Fontaine France, 2014 English, French with English subtitles 99 minutes Principal Cast: Gemma Arterton, Fabrice Luchini, Jason Flemyng, Niels Schneider For the source of her latest film, director Anne Fontaine has turned to graphic novelist Posy Simmonds, whose update of Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd provided Stephen Frears with the story for 2010’s Tamara Drewe. This time, Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel of romantic yearning, Madame Bovary, is the basis for another imaginative recasting of a timeless masterpiece. Embracing the melancholy of Flaubert’s book while placing it against the bucolic wonders of the verdant Norman landscape, Gemma Bovery orbits around its young, married protagonist, in this telling an Englishwoman (Gemma Arterton) who moves to a small French village with her husband (Jason Flemyng). Another recent arrival is Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini), a baker who has fled Paris, along with his long-suffering wife, in search of stability and equilibrium. Martin rapidly takes a proprietary interest in the English beauty and falls under the spell of her charm. Gemma’s passionate nature is ill served by her husband, and it’s not long before her eye starts to wander. Fontaine’s film is not just an incisive look at a young woman confronting a series of key choices in her life as she loses her head in a fit of passion: in her clever revision of the Flaubert original, she portrays Joubert as a man completely aware of the narrative of Madame Bovary, and who makes awkward and self-conscious interventions in an attempt to change that story. Luchini is perfect as the wary, lovelorn baker, while Arterton — who also starred as the title character in Frears’ film — fits the role of her namesake to perfection. As both the object and subject of love, she glides into her role with effortless aplomb. This term, 12 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. The film series is open to everyone. Regular admission is $7; Member’s admission is $4. January-April Memberships are $20 (regular), and $12 (Students/Seniors (65 years and up)/NBFC Members). Memberships are available at the door. For further info, contact NB Film Co-op at 455-1632, [email protected], or http://www.nbfilmcoop.com/exhibition/monday-night-film-series. 13. STU Human Rights and Campus Ministry present a Special Showing of To Light a Candle Feb 24 On Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 7pm in Sir James Dunn Hall, St. Thomas University, in Room G-1 STU Human Rights and STU Campus Ministry will host a free special showing of To Light a Candle. Through personal stories and dramatic archive footage, To Light a Candle gives a powerful account of the Baha’i people in Iran, a religious minority that builds solidarity, resilience and pride among its people through its passion for education. With the establishment of the informal Baha’i Institute of Higher Education (BIHE) in 1987, the Baha’i Faith – which has its roots in Iran – has championed equality and non-violence and garnered support from educationalists around the world to further its aim. Forbidden from attending or teaching at universities in Iran after the 1979 Islamic revolution, the students and teachers face enormous obstacles: classes are held at people’s houses in secret, with the threat of arrest part of everyday life. The filmmaker Maziar Bahari was the subject of Rosewater, a film which he produced with Jon Stewart of The Daily Show. Back to top.

14. Qwerty Reads presents Mark Jarman and Ross Leckie at the Wilser’s Room Feb 26 Come to the Wilser's Room in the Capital Complex on Thursday, February 26 to see Mark Jarman and Ross Leckie perform as our featured readers for this month's Qwerty Reads event. Also, comedian Kris Bone will be hosting the evening, providing some laughs between all of the great readings. Doors open at 7pm; we hope to see everyone there! Ross Leckie once had the jobs of “bun boy” and “relish girl” in the restaurant of a fancy New Hampshire hotel. His most recent book is The Critique of Pure Reason, which is like a lost puppy, as people either love it or feel sorry for it. He also edits The Fiddlehead and is a member of the editorial board for Icehouse Poetry, and not to namedrop, but he once had a beer with Seamus Heaney.

15. Rich Aucoin and Elephants Gerald at the Capital Complex Feb 27 The night begins and ends the same way; in between there is nothing but love for Rich Aucoin. But what happens before and after each one of these events—art, the music theory, the travel, the sacrifice, the lonely, the video rendering—goes unseen. Now is the time for it to be heard. On Ephemeral, Rich Aucoin takes his past three years of relentless worldwide touring—pick a town in France, a festival in Europe, heck, even pick a beach party in Madagascar, he’s been there and you were up front—and distills all of the big ideas philosophy majors like him love to ruminate on into 10 sharp dance-pop songs all pointed toward the same goal: to gather the things that keep us afraid and apart, and use them to pull us together. On Friday, February 27 the Capital presents: Rich Aucoin (http://www.richaucoin.ca/) Elephants Gerald (https://soundcloud.com/elephantsgeraldband) Tickets are $11.99 for presale(taxes/fees incl.) first 25 tickets; and $14.99 advance(taxes/fees incl).
