Councillor Martin MullaneyBirmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture
welcome from...
Welcome to ArtsFest, the UK’s biggest free arts festival, bringing people together to enjoy our city’s vibrant and diverse culture.
Birmingham has a long tradition of supporting the arts in all its forms – dance, literature, music, performance and the visual arts. ArtsFest gives you the chance to explore the best of Birmingham’s flourishing arts scene alongside the best of the region too.
During the weekend we will showcase our world-class, established companies like Birmingham Royal Ballet, Birmingham Opera Company, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Sampad, alongside new and emerging talent. Headlining ‘The Best of Birmingham with Kerrang! Radio and Q Radio’ is The Guillemots, and new for this year we also have FlowerFest at City Centre Gardens.
You have the opportunity to enjoy trusted favourites and hopefully try something for the first time. To encourage you to branch out and
experiment we are delighted to once again offer discounted tickets at the Ticket Booth in Symphony Hall over the ArtsFest weekend.
There are always plenty of activities and events going on in the city. To keep up-to-date, subscribe to Birmingham Bulletin at www.birmingham.gov.uk/bulletin You can also check out facebook.com/birminghamculture or follow brumculture on twitter.
Finally, I’d like to thank all of the artists, arts organisations and volunteers for giving their time and support to ArtsFest. Without this commitment we could not put on such a fantastically varied festival.
I hope you have a wonderful time at this year’s ArtsFest weekend, here in Birmingham.

12:00pm Electric CinemaIan Emes Retrospective: ‘Visual Mastermind behind The Dark Side of the Moon’ (12)This year, we are extremely honoured to be presenting a retrospective of Oscar-nominated, BAFTA-winning director/animator, Ian Emes. Emes’s career took off when pink Floyd saw the animation he’d made to their track, ‘One of These Days’. They loved it, and consequently commissioned Emes to make a number of other films for them, including the iconic clocks sequence from ‘Time’. Emes went on to produce music videos for a number of hugely popular musicians and bands, including Duran Duran, Wings, and Mike Oldfield. In 1984 he won a BAFTA and was nominated for an Oscar for his short, goodie Two Shoes. For full synopses, please visit www.artsfest.org.ukplease note that we’ll also be screening Ian Emes’s short The Chain and his cult classic feature, The Yob from 7:15pm at The Crescent Theatre this evening. Come early to get a seat as it may be very busy! After the screening, Ian Emes will partake in a Q&A with Ros Sinclair, Lecturer in Visual Communication at the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, as part of ArtsFest’s In Conversation strand (see page 7).
