Arts Open Welcomearts open is an event designed to promote regional visual arts in historic castlemaine

and the surrounding district. offering a rare opportunity to visit studios and galleries within

the shire and experience a behind the scenes, personal look at artists in their natural

habitat, discuss their artwork and techniques, and purchase directly from the artist.

beginning as a boom town after gold was discovered in 1851, castlemaine and the

Mount alexander shire now boasts a vibrant community with an eclectic mix of people

and a broad range of historical, culinary, artistic and social opportunities for visitors.

With the generous support of cantwell property, latrobe university, castlemaine art

gallery, bendigo art gallery and castlemaine brewing this event showcases over 100 local

artists, galleries, walks, talks and workshops in what has become a very successful

biennial event. Welcome and enjoy!

Train: castlemaine is an easy 90 minute journey from Melbourne’s southern cross station

along the bendigo line departing every hour from 6am to 10.30pm. castlemaine railway

station is centrally located making walking around town a great option.

Driving: castlemaine is approx 120km north west of Melbourne driving via the tullamarine

freeway following the signs to bendigo and the calder freeway. the turnoff to the old

calder highway at Malmsbury will take you via taradale, elphinstone and harcourt.

Walking: Walking maps and heaps of local information are available from the Visitor

information centre in the castlemaine Market building, Mostyn street, castlemaine.

Other towns in the shire include Maldon, chewton, harcourt, guildford and newstead.

While you can easily walk around castlemaine and visit a large number of studios and

venues, the outlying areas really require a car or a strong pair of cycling legs!

My work makes reference to language and the graphic nature of symbolism and the

making of marks. Most recently i have returned to incorporating geometric forms, bright

a deep concern for the environment, given the realities of climate change, informs my work.

My work is mainly based around the land. shapes, rocks and forms in the landscape, the

sky, mist and the light on the horizon line are some of my main influences. My interest lies

in the hidden beliefs and meanings that many cultures have regarding rocks, mountains

and mounds.

the caspa collective is made up of an unquantifiable number of artists of all shapes and

sizes working together and separately towards an as yet undefined common goal that can

loosely be described as existing somewhere between the paramaters of universal peace

and harmony and total world domination.

We have a rabbit warren of studios inhabited by a colourful mix of artists representing a

broad cross section of genres, from puppeteers to projection artists, plus everything in

between. We even have our own gallery to show off the results of our prodigious work

We have been full time artists for over 23 years. We work in wire, tin. copper and steel. our art

work has always reflected where we are in our lives.

We work with almost all recycled metals, this has always been important to us. We use the

ethereal and playful imagery of wildlife and flora – an exploration in the world of my own

Richard Baxter

My work typically explores the esoteric concept of consciousness and self.

in quantum physics, the world we observe only comes into existence with the observer.

Much of my imagery is set within vast fields of emptiness, plains or horizons producing a

My work has been influenced by memories of a childhood spent frequenting the docks in

a Welsh coal port, surrounded by the debris of an obsolete industrial landscape. thus

began a lifelong fascination with things mechanical and when i began making sculptures

in the early seventies these early memories influenced me, both formally and emotionally.
