PREFACE

For seven days in the golden months of autumn, the works of inter-national artists from different parts of the globe will hopefully bring inspiration to thousands of guests during the Artquake Istanbul 2014 – Uskudar Biennale, set at the Beylerbeyi Palace, an Ottoman edifice whose history embodies the glory of a great empire.

The event presents contemporary artworks, chosen from an array of techniques in various media and form, ranging from paintings to sculptures to digital art, which radiate in a prism of creativity. The selection comes from emerging and established artists of various nationalities and cultural backgrounds whose common credo is ‘to create and inspire’.

As visitors come to the Beylerbeyi Palace, the works will be exposed to thousands of viewers from different walks of life coming from different parts of the globe. Indeed, the biennale is a significant platform where the artists showcase their talents and techniques to a very wide audience. Hopefully the collection will bring inspiration not only to local residents but to the rest of the world as well and breed a culture for peace, for ‘an inspired society will never create war’. This event may well be a ‘Harbinger of Peace’

Istanbul, the city that cradled three great empires, Roman, Byzantin-ian and Ottoman, and whose magnificent history dates back to the 7th century BC is the host of this much awaited art event. Uskudar, anciently known as Iscoutari, where the Beylerbeyi Palace was erect-ed is located by the banks of the Bosphorous and one of the oldest districts of Istanbul. It is here where great poets, writers and artists congregated, a distinct characteristic of the district, which was car-ried up to the present times. It is therefore a very apt location for the Artquake Istanbul 2014-Uskudar Biennale.
