Summary

Artology2010focusedonwaterasathemeofexplorationandtheprogramcontinuedtogrowinsignificantways!Theprogramgrewfrom5to7weeks(4weeksforgrades6‐8and3weeksforgrades4‐5).Participationincreasedfrom41studentsto64students,a56%increase.23%ofthetheparticipantswerereturningstudentsfrompreviousyears.41%ofstudentshadperfectornearperfect(onlymissingoneday)attendance.

Artologyservedstudentswhowere:48%female,52%male,and86%AfricanAmerican.83%ofstudentscamefromfamiliesatorbelowFederalPovertyLevelorfromlow‐incomehouseholds.25%ofstudentswerecopingwithhomelessness,whichremainsconsistentwith2009statistics.BecauseArtologyisofferedfree,manyofthesestudentswouldnotbeabletoattendthisqualityofsummerprogrammingotherwise!

OurPreandPosttestresultsshowthat93%ofstudentsdemonstratedoverallpositivechangewithanaveragepercentpositivechangeof20%.Thehighestandmostsignificantincreaseswereinscienceandartknowledge.

Startingouteachdaywithadrummingcirclecontinuestobeabighitwithstudents.Theysaidthedrummingmadethemfeel…:

• “…Happy.Drumcirclemademefeelalive”.• “…Freebecausewegottomakeourownbeats”• “…Awaken[ed]andreadyfortherestoftheday”

ThisyeartheprogramaddedacommunityserviceprojectthroughcollaborationwiththeTookany,Tacony‐FrankfordWatershedPartnershipInc.Afterlearningaboutwaterissuesandresearchingwaterlovingplants,students(grades6‐8)createdtheirown“watergarden”artinstallationinanabandonedlot.Togetherstudentsandstaffmadeover600plantsculpturesthatwereinstalledfor2weeks.Thedayofinstallationincludedareceptionwithparticipationfromparents,neighbors,andlocalcommunityleaders.Duringthereceptionstudentsrosetotheoccasionandservedas“tourguides”forthevisitors.Theyproudlydiscussedhowtheymadetheinstallationandwhattheylearnedthroughtheprocess.Intheparticipantsurvey,manystudentslistedthisprojectastheirfavoritepartofArtology.

“Studentleader”provestobealastingtraditionatArtology.Thesestudentsareexceptional6‐8gradersthatwereinvitedbacktohelpwiththeyoungergroup(grades4‐5).Thisyear10studentswroteessaysinordertoapplyforthepositionsand4werechosentoreturn.Also,the3JuniorLeaders(HighSchoolstudents)continuedtoshowincreasedmaturityandresponsibility,especiallyChriswhostartedworkingwithArtologyin2008andhasbeenparticipatinginBuildabridgeprogrammingsince2007.Unexpectedly,oneJuniorLeaderwasareturningparticipantfrom2008thatArtologyhadlostcontactwith!

TheculminatingartshowwasanothergreatsuccessatthePhiladelphiaMuseumofArtwithasignificantincreaseinstudentandparentparticipationatthefinalreception.ThereceptionincludedrefreshmentsatSecondBaptistChurchandthenanawardceremonyatthemuseum.Theroomweretheceremonywasheldwaspacked(standingroomonly)withover200people.

Thisyearwecollectedsurveysandconductedinterviews

thatyieldedmanypowerfulresponsesfromstudents,staff,andparents.Forthesecondyearinarow,100%ofsurveyedparentswanttheirchildrentoparticipateagainnextyear.Overallweareencouragedbythesignificantprogressandinspiredtoovercomeanychallenges.OnestudentwrotethatArtologyis“thebestcampintheworld!”
