A City Is Not a Road – Artists for Ringland.

EN Throughout history artists have taken on the role of pioneers. They have defended the new and unfamiliar, and they have often become the face of a changing society. It is because of this basic attitude that we mobilised artists to support the proposal for a new approach to urbanization for what seems to be a local problem – the Antwerp ring road – but is in fact a challenge for many cities in evolution…

All over the world cities are wrestling with the problem of traffic congestion and health issues arising from an antiquated ring road that is rubbing up against the historic centre and choking the city. These old ring roads are holding their city hostage: they cause traffic flow problems and air pollution and are an obstacle to the city’s organic growth. These ‘no man’s land’ ring roads put up mental barriers between the city centre and the outer residential districts and adjoining municipalities.

In Antwerp the citizens-led initiative Ringland has been working on a visionary solution for the congesting ring road. This solution untangles a traffic knot, bolsters a healthy environment and creates a new green urban zone where schools and cultural and social attractions link the outskirts and the city centre and themselves become new focal points.

To support the autonomy of Ringland and its quest for liveable solutions we organise the art auction A City is Not a Road – Artists for Ringland. An advisory board consisting of professionals from the art field made a selection of the participating art works, which contains both upcoming and established artists, national and international.

As godmother and godfather of this auction Tinka Pittoors and Kris Fierens created a special edition for this event in support of Ringland. Kris made a silkscreen edition of 100 and Tinka organised a “Twist – day” on the first of May: together with Ringland volunteers she made a series of small coiling sculptures that can be hung around the driving mirror of a car.

We sincerely thank all participating artists.

Thank you to Tinka Pittoors and Kris Fierens for their generosity and hospitality.

Thank you also to the advisory board: Sofie Dederen (director Frans Masereel Centrum), Wilfried Huet (publisher of GAGARIN), Luc Wauters (Friends of the M HKA), Anne-Marie Poels (editor H ART – magazine for contemporary art), Wim Viaene (culture consultant Rossinant) and Frank Herman (Heritage/museum advisor).

Last but not least we thank Veilinghuis Bernaerts, Sara De Bondt for the design, H ART magazine, and the many volunteers of Ringland, especially Koen Lamberts, Saar Hermans, Tom Devolder, André Smessaert, Gie Reijniers, Frans Teuchies, Sven Augusteyns and Joris Baeten, Veerle Janssens, … for canalizing and framing our enthusiasm.
