1.1 ProQuest Platform Advanced Search

Welcome to the second learning module for the ProQuest platform. This learning module is titled “ProQuest Platform Advanced Search” and will focus on using the primary tools used for success in Advanced Search. Prior to taking this module, you should have completed the ProQuest Platform Basic Search module.

1.2 Session Objectives

Notes:

The objectives for this session include identifying essential easy access search fields and search field limiters; illustrating that the Advanced Search is flexible and customized to match the needs of distinct ProQuest database collections; and recognizing the ability to create highly complex searches using Command Line and available thesauri.

1.3 Advanced Search Main Screen


Notes:

The ProQuest platform Advanced Search provides a wide variety of easily identified and expanded searchable fields and indexes designed to enable focused and complex searches. Links across the top provide access to Command Line, Thesaurus, Field Codes, which are recognized abbreviations for search fields, and Search Tips.

You may add multiple search fields by clicking Add a row.

Each search field is separated by a choice of Boolean operators, AND, OR, or NOT. You may use these both between search terms in a search field as well as between each search field.

Other limiters are provided, such as Full-Text and Peer Reviewed, and Publication date ranges may be pre-selected before running any search. The lower portion of the screen will provide additional ways to limit searches, such as Source type, Document type, or Language of the content.

To the right of each search field is an expansion menu. When you click this menu, you will see a variety of ways to limit a search. These may include eliminating searching within the full-text of documents, or searching only within an abstract. You will also find searchable index options, such as MAINSUBJECT, Author, or Publication. When you select these, a searchable index is provided, customized to the index being searched.

In this index you may search desired terms, or browse alphabetically. Then you may select subjects, choose the Boolean operator to use in adding them to your search, then Add to search.

1.4 Collection-Specific Search Options

Notes:

Advanced Search in ProQuest may offer different search options when you access from within a single database collection, rather than across multiple database collections. Using the Databases menu option discussed in the Basic Search module, you may choose to search Advanced Search for a single collection, for example the ABI/Inform Collection. On the Advanced Search screen, a new set of searchable limiters is available, including North American Industry Classification codes, and ProQuest Classification codes for business.


The expansion menu in ABI/Inform Collection also offers new choices, including Company type, Fortune rank, or Ticker Symbol. These unique search options will vary with different database collections. For instance, many ProQuest medical database collections will provide searchable MeSH subject headings from the National Library of Medicine, and, in addition to ProQuest’s main searchable Thesaurus, distinct database collections may offer discipline-specific thesauri for searching.

1.5 Command Line Search


Notes:

At the top of the main Advanced Search page, there is a link to access the Command Line search. Command Line Search provides an open view for creating more complex content searches. You may manually create any search you need and view the details in the window, or use the Operators and Search fields tools at the top of the page.

Operators include Boolean, proximity, or quantity comparison symbols.

There are many search field abbreviations from which to select. Once a field or operator have been selected, clicking Add to form will add what is shown in each selection box to the search field window.

Once you have added to your form, you may then fill in your search terms. Quick access to a list of all field codes, Thesaurus terms or other indexed fields, including Command line help, are provided on the upper right. Once your search is built, click Search.

1.6 Thesaurus

Notes:

At the top of the Advanced Search page is a link to Thesaurus. ProQuest provides a main searchable and browseable thesaurus across most ProQuest database collections. However, there are also multiple recognized controlled vocabulary thesauri across many disciplines. Where it serves database collections effectively, the ProQuest platform will provide appropriate additional thesauri from which to search.

This module has identified and illustrated easily accessed search fields, including searchable indexed fields, used in creating focused searches; provided explanations and an example of how the ProQuest Advanced Search may be customized for discipline-specific collections; and described the functions and use of the Command Line search along with available thesauri.
