1.2 Session Objectives

The objectives for the session today include the identification of features specifically designed to help researchers retrieve focused results when searching across many collections;

discovery of easy ways to limit searches to one or more discipline-specific ProQuest collections available at an institution, or search for content within a defined subject area;

and, where to find search fields, operators, and abbreviations that may be employed for building more complex searches.

1.3 Basic Search – Upper Main Screen

Notes:

Before running a search, you may limit or focus your search by selecting to return only Full-text or Peer reviewed content.

Following that, the main menu bar provides options to search across All indexed source types, or you may specify from among the most commonly searched source types.

Under the More link, you may access and select to limit your search to all remaining available source types not listed on the main menu.

1.4 Basic Search – Lower Main Screen

Notes:

The lower portion of the main Basic Search screen provides access to common search tips such as limiting searches to a subject term or author name.

Help tutorial access and documentation are also linked.

The lower left portion of the screen provides an access link that allows specifying a subject area before searching.

1.5 Selecting a Collection for Searching

Notes:

Before running a search, it may be beneficial to isolate your search to content that is most appropriate for your subject matter. Begin by going to the top left menu of the Basic Search screen and clicking the link titled Databases.

The resulting page will list all of your institution’s ProQuest platform database collections. By default, all of your databases will be selected for searching.

Also by default, you will see detailed information for each database collection. To remove details from view, choose Brief view. Detailed information will include a title link that will open a dedicated Basic Search for the selected collection. A View title list link is provided to download the latest title list for any database collection.

Green information links provide additional detail about each database collection. Sometimes the name of a database collection is less helpful for narrowing a search than having a specific subject area on which to focus. In the upper right, clicking View by subject will change the list of your institution’s content to instead display a list of subjects.

Once the screen is reloaded, you will be able to choose your desired subject or subjects, and you will be able to click directly on a subject area to focus searches on that subject.

If selecting more than one option, once you have made your selections, click the Use selected databases button on the upper right to return to your newly customized Basic Search screen.

1.6 Search Tips

Notes:

Even when using Basic Search, the most frequently used search field functions are available for use.

On the main search screen, clicking Search Tips will provide access to an index of searchable topics that help explain your options in building a search, such as common field code abbreviations, operators, or wildcards.

1.7 Basic Search Example

Notes:

A Basic Search may be simply a few words typed out, or may use various search tools. Here is a sample Basic Search:

In this search, “renewable energy sources” is placed in quotation marks. This will require all returned results to contain this exact phrase.

Published by Articulate® Storyline www.articulate.com

The second part of the search will be run first, because it is in parentheses. Inside the parentheses is a proximity search between the word “hydro” and the words “diesel generator.” The word “hydro” is truncated with an asterisk to include various possible endings to the root term. The words “diesel generator” are also set apart as a phrase using quotations and ”generator” is truncated with an asterisk.

The proximity equation connecting them requires that they be found within fifteen words of each other in any returned result.

Finally, the first and second parts of the search are connected with a Boolean operator, “AND”, requiring both the first and second parts of the search to also be in all returned results.

1.8 Summary

Notes:

In summary, this session has identified the essential functions provided in the Basic Search that may be used to quickly and easily run effective searches;

Illustrated the ability to make selections by ProQuest discipline-specific collections or alternately by subject;

and discovered where to locate, understand, and employ search tools such as operators, field codes, and abbreviations for more precise searching.
