Dear Reader
Welcome to 9th & 10th edition of the ‘KVK News’ of South
Tripura. This year we received the Outstanding KVK
Award by ICAR Research Complex of NEH Region and
also 2nd Best Exhibition Award for showcasing of KVK
activities in the Mega Diwali Mela of Tripura.
In Tripura, lots of traditional plant varieties are being cultivated and to
recognize and protect these traditional varieties, awareness and training
programme were conducted. In result, farmer has submitted 83 plant
varieties of 20 crops for registration to PPV&FR Authority through our
KVK. Further, lot of diversity is found in Jackfruit types of Tripura and
to understand the extent of genetic diversity a study was conducted for
selection of suitable genotypes for value addition purposes.
Tribal families are mostly dependant on the upland/rainfed farming and
facing problems to sustain themselves solely on the income from crop
husbandry. Hence, KVK had undertaken programmes on Pig farming,
Mushroom farming, Nutritional Kitchen gardening, etc. as
complementary livelihood activities under Tribal Sub Plan with the
support of ICAR RC for NEH Region and CARI (Port Blair).
The traditional cultivation practices of horticultural crops results in low
productivity, high incidence of pests/ diseases and extending harvesting
season which result in meager return. KVK started cultivation of hybrid
vegetable crops (Arka series) by integrating IPM, INM and micro-
irrigation technologies. Small fruit orchard of farmers also undertaken
with such technologies with the support of IIHR, Banglore.
Technologies of cost effective low carbon in rice based cropping system,
zero tillage mustard, wheat and lentil in Rice fallow, Amur Carp in
Carp Polyculture, Perennial grass with legume fodder, RTC green
jackfruit , etc are being assessed under On-Farm Trials. The improved
variety of rice, black gram, lentil, mustard, cowpea and okra has been
demonstrated in about 157 hectare area by 490 farmers under FLD.
Other demonstrations were Integrated Fish Farming, Goatary, Poultry
and energy saving devices like fruit harvester, coconut dehusker.
During, 2013-14, training on 64 courses were conducted covering 2772
farmers & farm women, 690 rural youth and 208 extension personnel.
Altogether 636 extension activities were organized covering about 4395
farmers and rural youth.
In spite of infrastructure constraints like non-existence of
administrative building, farmer’s hostel, staff quarters, laboratory etc.
KVK is significantly contributing through technical backstopping by
conducting number of given programmes.

PPrrootteeccttiioonn ooff PPllaanntt vvaarriieettyy aanndd FFaarrmmeerr’’ss RRiigghhtt Plant breeding and conservation of
biodiversity have been carried out for centuries
by farmers and traditional tribal communities
of Tripura without reaping any commercial or
personnel benefit. Access to improved
varieties, landraces and intellectual property
through traditional knowledge is thus freely
available to all without expecting any
commercial returns. Farmers in Tripura often
maintain a variety of valuable indigenous
germplasm at their personal cost. We therefore
obligation to recognize and protect these
traditional varieties and contribution made by
rural families.
India‟s Protection of Plant Varieties and
Farmers' Rights Act enacted in 2001 is the
legislation which provide rights to farmers to
save, use, exchange and sell farm-saved seed.
With this background, KVK has organized
Farmer‟s Workshop on “Protection of Plant
Varieties and Farmers Rights Act, 2001” in
collaboration with PPV&FR Authority (Min. of
Agriculture, Govt. of India) and ICAR RC for
NEH Region during Sept 2013 and March 2014.
This is to sensitize the farming community for
registration of their local crop varieties.
Officials from ICAR, Forest Department, JICA
Project, KVK, Farmers‟ Club, Tribal
organization, Farmers, etc. participated in this
programme. During Sept 2013, Dr. A.C.
Sharma, Dy Registrar, PPV&FR (Guwahati)
advised farmers of South Tripura to protect
their traditional varieties by sending their
application through KVK and other designated
organization. More than 200 farmers and farm
women from Bagma, Mirza, Dudhpuskarini,
Sataria, Chandrapur, Garjee, Laxamicherra,
Sabroom, Ramraibari, Sonaichari, SBC Nagar
and Sukantanagar village participated in this
programme.
After the programme, farmers and farmer‟s
group of South Tripura and Gomati district
submitted 83 applications for registration of 20
crops through KVK, South Tripura. These crop
varieties are of Rice, Maize, Millets, Mustard,
Sesame, Field Pea, Lentil. Blackgram, Arhar,
Jute, Cotton, Brinjal, Beans, Bhendi, Tomato,
Potato, Sugarcane, Turmeric, Ginger and
Orchid. Seed samples has also been sent to
designated office through PPV&FR Authority.

Lot of diversity is found in Jackfruit types of
Tripura in terms of fruit size, shape, colour of
bulbs, taste, aroma and processing qualities.
These variations need to be identified to put them
to indented purpose and also to conserve and use
them for production of planting materials and
orchard development. Morphological
characteristics play a very important role in
classification or analysing genetic variability in
any species. These will help in correlating with
molecular markers and correct identification of
Jackfruit types, so that a clear picture can be
obtained with respect to various qualitative and
quantitative traits of Jackfruit types.
A Study was carried out to understand the extent
of genetic diversity in Jackfruit, and to select
superior types of Jackfruit in Tripura State of
India under the DBT project being implemented
by KVK. The germplasm of Jackfruit was
evaluated and selections were made on the basis
of characteristics of fruit, pulp, seed, leaf, yield,
and Total Soluble Solid content.
.
Variation among the selected types included
medium to tall tree size (5-30 m),
greenish/yellowish/reddish yellow fruit
colour, fruits weighting 1.5-10.5 kg, 15-250
fruits/plant, fruit shape (round to long),
creamy white to coppery red flake colour,
number of flakes (5-207/fruit), flake length (3- 7
cm) and TSS of 6-25° Brix. Variation was also
observed in tree growth habit (erect to
spreading type) and fruit bearing habit
(regular/twice a year) bearing among
genotypes. The genotypes were selected and
may be used for vegetable, dessert and high
juice content for processing purposes.

PPiigg FFaarrmmiinngg uunnddeerr TTrriibbaall SSuubb--PPllaann About 40% tribal population resides in the South
Tripura district and traditionally involved in pig
rearing. Farmers are mostly rear desi pig breeds
like Doom and Mali for fattening purpose only.
However, cross breeds of pig farming is found
more profitable. As per study of ICAR RC for
NEH Region, the crossbred & pure breed of pigs
(Tamworth x Duroc, Duroc x Mali, Yorkshire and
Ghungroo crossbred, etc.) have shown a good
potential as their body weight has been recorded
as 70-80 kg, puberty attainment at 6-8 months,
breed twice in 16-18 months, etc.
In the tribal village of Rupaichari and Satchand
block, KVK is demonstrating improved breeds of
pig with housing, feed and health management
to 40 farmers under the TSP programme of ICAR
Research Complex for NEH Region (Tripura
Centre). Training and extension activities were
organised in the identified village (Chalita
Bankul & Maira) for capacity building of farmers.
Financial support (TSP) was provided to all
40 tribal farmers for construction of low cost
pig house. One pair of piglet of crossbred and
pure breed (Tamworth x Duroc, Duroc x Mali,
Yorkshire and Ghungroo) was also provided
along with feed to each farmer. Veterinary
assistance as well as other technical support is
being provided at regular interval by the
KVK.

The results of scientific pig farming with
different pig breeds indicates that pure breed
of Yorkshire and crossbred of Ghungroo and
“Duroc x Mali” performed well as compared
to “Tamworth x Duroc” and local breed.
Thus, scientific pig farming of suitable
crossbred of pig can generate adequate profit
to tribal farmers within 8-9 months due to rise
in productivity and the enhanced quality and
quantity of pork meat. This is a kind of
complementary livelihood activities of tribal
farmers of South Tripura district.

Smt. Priti Roga of East Chandrapur village set
an example in earning quite high profit from
mushroom enterprise. She prepared fifty cubes
and produced about 60 Kgs of fresh mushroom
in 3-4 harvesting. The newly started enterprise
could earn the novice about more than ten
thousands rupees only in five months. After
witnessing the success of Smt. Roga, more than
fifteen farm women of the same locality
grouped into a women association (Mahila
Samiti) to immediately start mushroom
cultivation. Presently, they are earning a net
income up to Rs. 7500/- from a small
mushroom production unit of 50 cubes only in
