Painter and sculptor rebecca Polyblank lives and works on Bodmin Moor and is inspired by the natural beauty of north Cornwall and its ever changing seasons. Walking the moors daily in different weathers, her experience of colour, temperature, light, flora and fauna are reflected in the detailed pencil and ink studies she makes at her studio, and later the flattened, almost decorative surfaces of her paintings. Particularly appealing are her simplified sculptures of rabbits, owls, deer and other creatures, all of which convey the gravitas of bronze work, but are in fact skilfully and rather intriguingly created from paper mache.www.newcraftsmanstives.com

Animal sculpture and installation artist rebecca Mcdonald held her first solo exhibition at St ives’ new Craftsman gallery just eighteen months ago and since then her unique talent has catapulted her to the top of the discerning collectors’ most wanted list. A multi-disciplined artist with a background in set design, she hand-felts exquisitely rendered creature characters using British fleece wool, taking from three days to several months to complete each piece. Exhibited in custom built, head-turning sets, her works are no less vivid as one-off sculptural objects and are amongst the most original works you will have the good fortune to see.www.newcraftsmanstives.com

INSPIRATIONAl SPACEvICTORIA yOUNG-JAMIESON

The north cornish coastline is special to painter victoria Young-Jamieson. Her family have farmed

around St Mawgan for many years, growing mostly wheat and barley, and she spent her summers as a child exploring Mawgan Porth Beach.

now she exhibits her work – water and ink paintings inspired by Mawgan Porth, Porthcothan, Tregirls, Constantine Bay – at the Create Art gallery at Bedruthan Steps Hotel & Spa.

Her paintings – created by pouring water and oil onto canvas - capture a mood and recreate the movement and texture of the landscape.

“You only have to visit Bedruthan Steps once to realise it’s a special place, but when you study it every day, you realise that it is far more than just a place. The high cliffs, rugged coastline and extreme tides create an ever-changing landscape.

“it’s the best spot for watching sunsets with fish and chips, and it never looks the same.

“in the winter, you can watch the angry white swell as it crashes on the rocks. in summer, the sea is like a mill pond - turquoise like somewhere in the Mediterranean.

“Bedruthan Steps is a constant source of inspiration to me.”

Essex Tyler

ARTIST’S FoCuS

of the four elements – earth, air, fire and water – it is the incomparable force of water that plays a pivotal role in Essex Tyler’s work. His identity as a surfer, sailor and fisherman bleeds effortlessly into his art, bringing together big liquid skies, the irascible Atlantic ocean and the copper stained cliffs of West Cornwall. “Painting is like surfing. You do not get anywhere before you have mastered the basics – spot the best waves, paddle out using the rip currents, take off at the point of maximum

energy, bottom turn, tube ride, exit with style”it is the ethos of this relationship with the ocean that blends so notably in Essexs’ work. initially establishing himself as a potter, with raku pots veined with cobalt, Essex possess’ a depth of knowledge of the clays and metals that stain his paintings, and it is this knowledge that makes his canvases so powerful. using oils, acrylics, beeswax and marble dust, colours, tones and textures are repeated over and over to work as building

blocks, so that improvisation becomes possible. With every piece, paint is pushed and pulled around the canvas, some are erratic, crashing cascades of colour and texture, others are smooth, eloquent brush strokes – reflections of the ever-changing tide of the dominating sea. Based in Mousehole, Essex continues to convert his identity to the earth and sea into his art, his work can be viewed online and in the Tyler gallery.

lamorna’s Art History

AT A glanCe

over the last century, Lamorna Cove has been home to novelists, potters, and some of Britain’s most well-known artists in British Modernism.

Previously known for its mining ecnomoy, Lamorna initially became popular as an artistic hotpost with the already prestigious newlyn Art Colony around the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. An atmospheric coastline consisting of a sheltered cove, flanked by grand cliffs at the end of a fairytale-like wooded valley, it was no surprise Lamorna quickly became a focus for art, filled with memorable and influential figures that would thrive from

this dramatic setting for years to come, with one of its most famous admirers and residents being Samuel John ‘Lamorna’ Birch.

Born in 1869, ‘Lamorna’ Birch began his life in Ergemont, Cheshire and first visited west Cornwall during the 1880s as a young man.

during this first visit he instantly fell in love, visiting the Penzance district frequently from 1889, settling in St Buryan in 1897 and eventually in Lamorna in 1902.

it was during this period of his life, Lamorna Birch, created some of his most distinguished and important works of art.

To begin with, Lamorna Birch

Hidden away amongst miles of distinctive coastline and overlooking a cerulean sea resides a small gem of Cornish art culture. Here we take a look at the long and illustrious impression Lamorna Cove has had on artists throughout the ages, and the people that were inspired by this stunning landscape.

was part of the newlyn Art Colony, but his attraction to the cove encouraged him to start his own colony based directly in Lamorna, where it quickly gained a reputation, acquiring notable members such as Harold and Laura Knight, Alfred Munnings, Frank gascoigne Heath and Stanley gardiner.

Such was Samuel John’s love for the cove, he adopted the soubriquet ‘Lamorna’, an idea suggested to him by none other than Stanhope Forbes, a founding father of the newlyn Art Colony. This was also done to distinguish himself from Lionel Birch, another well-known artist around the time.

Birch was a largely self-taught

artist, apart from a brief period in 1895 when he studied at the ‘Atelier Colarossi’ in Paris. in 1926, Birch was elected as an Associate of the royal Academy and was made a full royal Academician eight years later in 1934, showing over two hundred paintings there.

He died in his home at Lamorna on 7th January 1955, his long and illustrious career lives on in over 200 works of art, most of which are exhibited at the royal Academy and in galleries across Britain such as Penlee House and derby Art gallery.

“Lamorna quickly became an artistic haven, filled with memorable and influential figures ”
