    Board of Directors

We near the end of a year which has been a hallmark of progress for arts and culture providers and supporters in Polk County. Not only did our Tourist Development Council come to a long-awaited recognition that arts and culture play a role in attracting tourism that is worth funding, but our Board of County Commissioners also formally recognized that their official Local Arts Agency has come of age by generously supporting Polk Art Alliances marketing mission. Change happens slowly sometimes, but slow change may also produce deeper insight into the correct path ahead. Such has been the case in 2013, when the arts and culture community found its voice in County politics and, I believe, increased its support in business and governmental circles. We have also shown our persistence and ability to stay a long course, if necessary, towards the fullest recognition that arts and culture organizations merit a place at the table in all matters affecting the economic development of our County. As a community, we now face in 2014 an equal challenge in creating a united marketing vision for Polk arts and culture, bridging the inordinate physical distances between our communities and their often historically separated goals. We need to lift up out of daily concerns for some productive time every month to find or distil Polks sense of place in arts and culture, so that we can push our edges outward. On behalf of the Board, we want PAA to be where that happens.

    message from the

    Executive Director

    Meri Mass

Polk County is looking forward to a very full and festive holiday season for 2013-2014. The holiday season always exemplifies our world class arts, talent, entertainment, events and programs that surround us in every city, enriching the quality of life we experience in Polk County.

The Polk Arts Alliance looks ahead to the New Year to continue working toward our mission and objectives. This includes developing and marketing the image of Polk County as a Cultural Arts Destination as a whole while focusing on the special and unique attributes of each community and what they offer and present in the arts. The Alliances goal is to do this in collaboration with our local municipalities, state and national partners to ultimately bring global awareness of all Polk County offers in the arts, our vast cultural arts sector and put us on the map!

We have a lot of work to do but we have excellent support, new tools for marketing our arts, great momentum and the abundant talent throughout the county, Im looking forward to an exciting 2014!

Call it the Glee phenomenon. For at least a dozen years now, more and more young people have been drawn to the magic of theatrical performance that combines acting, singing and dancing, which means Florida Southern College has started its new musical theater program at just the right time.

While the style has evolved from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Rent, musicals are undergoing a renaissance, FSC Theatre Arts Department Chairman James Beck said.

These kids are up on shows I dont even know, he said. Its a cool thing to be in a show.

FSCs musical theater program was launched at the start of the fall semester with 11 students and a new faculty member, Christi Roll, whose specialty is musical theater. To show off its chops, the department has expanded the number of staged musicals in its performance schedule from one to two, giving Florida Southerns already strong Theatre Arts Department more visibility in the local theater scene.

Roll will provide the musical direction for the first musical in the schedule, Next to Normal, which runs Nov. 14-17 and 21-24 in the Loca Lee Buckner Theatre on the FSC campus. One of the newer-style rock musicals, Next to Normal explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness with provocative lyrics and a thrilling score.

What I like about the score is that it has a nice combination of instruments. And the subject matter is so important. It makes you reflect on your own life, and thats good theater, Roll said.

The departments schedule for the remainder of the year includes the musical The Wedding Singer in February and the classical drama Electra in April.

Roll is an Equity stage actress who has appeared off-Broadway and was a finalist in the BBCs Voice of Musical Theatre International Competition. She taught for five years at Emory and Henry University in Virginia and was attracted to the FSC post because of the opportunity it presented.

I liked being involved in building a new program. It is a bachelor of fine arts degree track but in a smaller college that allows intensive training, coupled with one-on-one attention, she said.

For Beck, the musical theater program is the fulfillment of a longtime goal, and he praised Rolls qualifications to get it off the ground.

Im so excited about her. She has a strong music and singing background, teaching experience and great professional credentials. Shes just as dynamic as can be, he said.

Another goal for Beck is making the program and its theatrical productions more widely known. If FSCs productions do attract bigger audiences, it may be in large measure to musicals.

Id love to see us become better known. We have loyal followers in our audiences, but were a well-kept secret, he said.

Forty three seasons. Four hundred productions. The community of theatre in Winter Haven.

Now its Season 44. Theatre Winter Haven, Floridas most honored community-based theatre, presents a slate of plays designed to evoke the imagination, the soul and the spirit.

The stage is a place to both forget today but remember tomorrow.

That seems truth for the opening production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Timeless and traditional, milkman and father Tevye tries holding to his customs and traditions in a world spinning out of control. Without them, he says, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof .

From Zero Mostel to Leonard Nimoy, the role of Tevye in American productions has been played by Herschel Bernardi, Theodore Bikel, Harvey Fierstein, Alfred Molina and Paul Lipson (who holds the distinction of appearing as Tevye more than 2,000 times!). The production has been seen by over 50 million people since its opening in 1964. No pointy-eared Vulcan here, just a humble Jewish dairyman pining for peace and stability.

In December, THE MIRACLE WORKER continues the journey of soul and spirit as Helen Keller, a young woman locked into a world of silence and darkness, learns to comprehend that world through the unshakable faith of her also young teacher. A story not based on a true story but is one.

The play garnered several Tony Awards, including Best Play. Adapted for the screen and nominated for five Academy Awards, Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke won Oscars for their portrayals of teacher Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller. (The film version is one of the few to garner a 100% critical response from the rating website Rotten Tomatoes). Today THE MIRACLE WORKER is performed annually in Ivy Green, Alabama, the birthplace of Helen Keller.

Allowing our journey through faith and tradition a pause, Theatre Winter Haven provides the audience bountiful laughter in the production of DONT DRESS FOR DINNER. When a romantic rendezvous with his mistress becomes a frenetic case of mistaken identities and outrageous infidelities, lead character Bernard provides us with more twists than a corkscrew. Illicit bliss and ingenious cover-ups conspire to create an evening of hilarious laughter that wont inspire anyone--it will just cause the soul to smile a lot.

It is rare for a Broadway comedy to be nominated, but DONT DRESS FOR DINNER succeeded in gathering two Tony nominations plus a duo of Outer Critics Circle Awards. It ran for six years in London and remains an unabashed delight for American audiences. After all, theres nothing quite like spending a whole evening laughing. Even Tevye would agree.

The worlds most popular and critically acclaimed musical takes the stage in February/March of 2014. LES MISERABLES, seen by over 60 million, performed in 42 countries, translated into 27 languages

and recently transformed into a movie winning three Oscars and the Golden Globe Award for Best Film. A story of redemption and salvation and based on the 1985 stage musical, itself based on the 1862 Victor Hugo novel.

Has there ever been as successful a musical as Les Miz first panned by the critics? Not likely. According to Wikipedia The Sunday Telegraph described the show as a lurid Victorian melodrama produced with Victorian lavishness and The Observer dubbed the show a witless and synthetic entertainment, while literary scholars condemned the project for converting classic literature into a musical.

As it follows the story of Jean Valjean, a former convict who broke parole but became a respected member of his community, the production pits his attempts at salvation against the obsessive quest of Inspector Javert to return Valjean to justice. In August of this year British radio listeners voted it the greatest musical of all time. Many others around the world would also give it the top spot. In America, Les Miz won eight Tony Awards and five Drama Desks. Sixty million people just wont pay for witless and synthetic.

Back to America-and the American woman--we end the regular season in April with the crowd- pleasing THE DIXIE SWIM CLUB. The play unfolds the story of five southern women who became good friends while members of their swim team. The friendship endured thanks to the annual girls weekend get-together at the beach each August for the past 33 years.

Enduring friendships, endearing characters and an entertaining play--the trifecta of success. We bring the audience a warm-hearted piece that has seen over 200 productions in America. Doesnt matter that you may not be from Dixie, as long as youre human and still have a pulse this play will remind you of how much we depend on each other. Spirit and soul on the varsity squad.

Season 44 at Theatre Winter Haven, now in progress, promises to delight and evoke. With a pledge to deliver a duet of entertainment and enrichment--a tradition that is nowhere near as shaky as any fiddler on the roof but as sturdy as any rock in Gibraltar.

Theatre Winter Haven was chosen this year to represent the United States of America at the European One-Act Play festival with their production of GOLDAS BALCONY.

THE SOUL AND THE SPIRIT OF THEATRE

    THE MIRACLE WORKERDecember 5 - 22, 2013

One of the most inspiring dramas of our time. The true story of a young Helen Keller locked in a frightening world of silence and darkness. Through the unshakable faith of her young teacher, Annie Sullivan, Helen acquires the ability to comprehend the world around her. The story was immortalized onstage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke.

    Stephen Knapp:New LightDecember 14, 2013 - March 8, 2014

In December, Polk Museum of Art will be showing an exhibition of 14 lightpaintings by Massachusetts artist Stephen Knapp. Stephen Knapp: New Light will be on view December 14 through March 8.

Knapps lightpaintings are created by using shards of fused glass, installed perpendicular to the walls surface, to reflect beams of light into abstract compositions. These unique works deepen the traditional relationship between the painter and light. They also expand the concept of light sculpture and light art while continuing the traditions of op art and abstract painting. His sculptural canvases appear to be painted but are all created with light and glass. Lightpaintings are the intersection of painting, sculpture and technology by exploring color, light and space.

Knapp has more than 30 years of experience creating installation art and exploring the possibilities of light. His work can be found in museum, public, corporate and private collections.

The exhibition will be celebrated at a reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, December 13. A lecture about the artwork will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a reception featuring light hors doeuvres and a cash bar. The event is free for members and $10 for guests.

Paintings of the Space AgeThrough December 7, 2013

Polk Museum of Art is proud to welcome an exhibition of large-scale paintings depicting space exploration from the Smithsonians National Air and Space Museum. The exhibition Paintings of the Space Age will be on view through December 7.

Although the National Air and Space Museum is known internationally for its impressive collection of objects and crafts pertaining to Americas history in aviation and space exploration, it is less known for having a collection of artworks. With help from the Smithsonians Affiliations Program, the Polk Museum of Art will exhibit a sampling of paintings produced in the 1960s after James Webb, administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, suggested that artists be enlisted to document the historic effort to send the first human beings to the moon. NASA dispatched some of the nations foremost artists to NASA facilities with an invitation to paint whatever interested them.

This is the second major project undertaken by the Polk Museum of Art as a Smithsonian Affiliate. The Polk Museum of Art became a Smithsonian Affiliate in August 2010. The Smithsonian Affiliations program offers museums, nonprofit cultural institutions and educational organizations across the country the opportunity to have access to Smithsonian collections, programs and expertise.

Rising 205 feet over central Floridas rolling hills of citrus is one of the great achievements of Americas golden age of architecture Edward W. Boks art deco, neo-Gothic Singing Tower, which houses one of the worlds finest carillons and serves as the iconic focal point of Bok Tower Gardens. No other setting like it exists anywhere in the world, and no other book explores the story of this extraordinary public monument likeBOK TOWER GARDENS: Americas Taj Mahalby Kenneth Treister and David Price.

According to David Price, co-author and president of Bok Tower Gardens, Boks story is one of appreciation and giving back to the country that afforded him so much over his lifetime. Bok wanted to create a place of beauty as a gift to the American people, and the culmination of his lifes work was the dedication of the gardens and tower in 1929, Price said. Its part of American history, a story that deserves to be told.

Built in 1929 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993, Bok Tower Gardens is an architectural and landscape masterpiece. Publisher, philanthropist, and naturalist Edward Bok commissioned two esteemed designerslandscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. and architect Milton B. Medaryto create a sanctuary that would preserve the areas natural beauty and become a haven for birds and wildlife. The result is a meandering, historic landscape garden in a contemplative and informal woodland setting offering a series of romantic recesses and tranquil resting spots, picturesque vistas and breathtaking views of Boks 60-bell, marble and coquina Singing Tower carillon.

Millions of visitors from all over the world have traveled to Bok Tower Gardens over the years to experience Boks vision first hand. Now co-authors Treister and Price, in conjunction with former Harvard University president Derek Bok, former Florida governor and senator Bob Graham, and architectural photographer Dan Forer bring this story to life inBOK TOWER GARDENS: Americas Taj Mahal, the first book of its kind about this unique destination.

One of the highlights of the Imperial Symphony Orchestras season is their annual holiday concert, this year titled Winter Wonderland. This annual event has always drawn large audiences due to the orchestras tradition of presenting a fun-filled evening of seasonal tunes, surprises, and of course great fun. This year is no exception as the concert has a variety of music that is sure to appeal to all members of the family.

The evenings special guests are the Lakeland Choral Society under the direction of Dr. Larry Sledge. This outstanding community chorus has shared the stage with the ISO many times in past years and the ISO is extremely excited to have them back with the symphony doing what they do best, making a joyful noise through singing. The Choral Society will sing two main selections during the evening. The first one has been a favorite with our audiences over the years Composer Ken Darbys musical setting of the classic Christmas poem Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clark Moore. This timeless piece is even more breathtaking when performed by 150 instruments and voices. The second selection is a medley of well known carols by contemporary composer Randol Bass titled A Feast of Carols. This music is a fresh approach to the carols that have endured for years and years.

The symphony opens the evening with A Christmas Fantasy for Orchestra scored masterfully by arranger Dan Goeller. I like to think of this fast paced music as the three wise men meet Jack Sparrow. The ISO performs another Dan Goeller gem titled Appalachian Carol, a lush, film-score styled arrangement, that begins and ends with an ethereal tin whistle solo and culminates in a soaring, epic setting of this piece of Americana.

Along with all of this great music, the Orchestra will perform highlights from Polar Express, a dynamic Hanukkah medley and other selections, designed to put you, the listener, in the most jovial holiday spirit ever.

The Imperial Symphony Orchestras Winter Wonderland takes place in the Youkey Theatre at the Lakeland Center on December 10 and begins at 7:30pm. Please plan to attend this gala event presented by your Imperial Symphony Orchestra.

Vincent Sansone is the Director of the Ceramics and Sculpture

Department at the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Florida. He

has over three decades of experience as a professional arts educator

national crafts exhibits. For more information about Sansone and

    his work, visit www.sansoneart.com

Any visitor should be ready for a hare-raising ride when a piece of public

art includes a sign that says: Welcome to Lakeland, Florida. Where dreams

come true. So be careful what you dream! This much-anticipated piece,

commissioned by the creative arts organization, Platform Art, and executed

by Vincent Sansone of the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, completes

the second phase of Platforms Orange Street Bridge Project. Sansones

piece builds upon the work created for the north side of the bridge in 2011,

by Beatte Marston of St. Petersburg. While Marstons piece includes

more realistic images reflective of Lakelands landscape and its history

of agriculture, Sansones piece is whimsical, witty, and a little bit wild.

Described by Sansone as an 86-foot long cartoon strip, the high-re

stoneware tile mosaic reects the artists creativity, irreverent sense of humor,

and love of puns. Anthropomorphized rabbits are featured prominently,

consistent with the artists self-described Bunnidom phase. Bunnies appear

in a famous painting by Edouard Manet, as the operators of a cleaning

service (dust bunnies) and as pilots keeping the skies above Lakeland

safe (hare planes). As a nod to the agricultural history of Lakeland, Sansone

has included images of citrus, including blood oranges, which become

    vampires during the harvest.

Platforms Orange Street Bridge tile installation is one of a number of public

art pieces distributed throughout Lakelands central business district, and

serves as a catalyst for future projects linking regional artists to community

redevelopment. Lakeland has increasingly become a destination for

residents and visitors alike to enjoy the visual and performing arts,

through venues like Platform Art, The Lakeland Center, Polk Theatre, and

the Polk Museum of Art, to commercial establishments like 1026 SoFlo and

continues to grow, so we invite you to come and explore Lakeland, where

dreams come true.Platform cultivates appreciation for all facets of the arts, and

Vincent Sansone is the Director of the Ceramics and Sculpture

Department at the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Florida. He

has over three decades of experience as a professional arts educator

and potter, and is well known as a top award winner at regional and

national crafts exhibits.

Lakeland has increasingly become a destination for

residents and visitors alike to enjoy the visual and performing arts,

through venues like Platform Art, The Lakeland Center, Polk Theatre, and

the Polk Museum of Art, to commercial establishments like 1026 SoFlo and

the Donna Watson Galleries. Our collection of public art and cultural venues

continues to grow, so we invite you to come and explore Lakeland, where

dreams come true.Platform cultivates appreciation for all facets of the arts, and

the Artful Bowl event serves as a link for the community to these

important cultural projects. Randy Glotfelty, Lakeland artist and

proprietor of Jen-Ken Kilns, made delicately crafted bowls for

each of the events participants. Artful Bowl 2013 celebrates

the 3D ceramic tile installation on the south side of the Orange

Street Bridge. For more information on Platform Art visit

Beautiful music is made every day within the classrooms of Polk State Music just stroll down the hall of the Winter Haven Fine Arts building some time, and youll hear it for yourself.

But every once in a while, something extra special happens here. Maybe its chemistry. Maybe its magic. Whatever it is, every now and then, a small group of students is drawn to one another, and they create completely of their own volition a whole new performance ensemble.

The most recent example of this is The Force of Attraction, a female quartet that formed about a year ago and has since performed for a wide variety of audiences, serving as the Music departments go-to community ambassadors.

These sort of ensembles just happen, its spontaneous art, said Polk State Music Professor Michelle Manzi, who oversees The Force of Attraction, a versatile group she describes as Il Divo meets En Vogue.

Its completely student-driven. It wouldnt be as good if the department forced it. These are students who are really self-motivated and share a common passion.

Now Representing Polk State Music:The Force of AttractionFrom News.polk.edu

The Force of Attraction includes vocalists Holly Helm, Chanqueria Grimes, Nilka Lopez, and Amelia Marler, who say they recognized in each other a shared yearning for more music in their lives. They didnt want to just go to class and leave music behind when it was over. They didnt want to just learn the songs they had to for a grade.

They wanted to sing. All the time.

We knew we would take it seriously and that we all cared about music, said Lopez, 20, a Lakeland resident who will graduate with her Associate in Arts in May and plans on continuing her education to study music composition.

We also knew that by performing together as a small group, we would learn music faster and get to do different kinds of music.

So far, Lopez has been spot-on in her expectations.

The Force spends hours together practicing outside of class, constantly expanding their repertoire. They sing everything from 60s doo-wop favorites to current hits by chart-toppers Katy Perry and Sara Bareillis.

In the past year, the quartet has followed a busy performance schedule Manzi jokingly refers to herself as its bookie that has included engagements for the United Way, Womens Resource Center, the Polk State College Foundation, political groups and churches, just to name a few.

The Force of Attraction includes, from left,Amelia Marler, Holly Helm, Nilka Lopez, and Chanqueria Grimes.

  • Art-i-facts A Publication of the Polk Arts Alliance 27

The quartet takes on each performance engagement for no money in return, and many times at their own personal sacrifice, Manzi said be it hours they could be working or with their families and friends.

But in exchange for the time they give to represent Polk State and its Music Department, they receive invaluable performance experience, opportunities they wouldnt necessarily get if they were starting their music careers at a bigger institution.

Everything comes out of their own intrinsic desire to hone their craft and create opportunities for themselves, Manzi said. Theyre getting real-life experiences. Every time they perform, they become a little more professional.

Helm said theres nothing like being part of an ensemble to stretch yourself as an individual.

Theres a bit of friendly competition, said Helm, 22, who graduated from Polk with her Associate in Arts degree earlier this year and plans on earning a bachelors degree from the Colleges still-in-development Elementary Education program.

You want to be better as a whole unit, so you practice more on your own. You get better as an individual and then you advance the whole group.

Polk State Music Professor John Anderson has seen multiple groups like The Force emerge during his eight years with the College. There truly is something a little magical about students finding each other and dedicating themselves to an ensemble when they certainly dont have to.

Its inspiring, as an educator, to see that spark happen. Its the love of music in its purest form, he said. These are students who simply love to sing, or love to play. They collaborate, they jam, they grow and they represent our program proudly in the community. We cant predict which students are going to mesh or what ensembles we may have a month, a year, down the road. But when it happens, its serendipitous, beautiful and fun.

The Force of Attraction hopes to eventually embark on a statewide tour. Their upcoming performances include Polk State Music concerts on March 1 at 7 p.m., March 2 at 2:30 p.m., May 3 at 7 p.m., and May 4 at 2:30 p.m. at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Theatre, 999 Ave. H N.E. All shows are $5 for the general public.

In addition to Polk State Music, Polk State Fine Arts includes Polk State Theatre and Polk State Visual Arts, all of which enjoy outstanding statewide reputations.

    Celebrating TraditionsNovember 29-January 5

Christmas at Bok Tower Gardens is always a favorite time for guests of all ages, and this year is no exception. Upon entering the Gardens, youll be greeted by our annual poinsettia display in the fountain courtyard and 12-foot Christmas tree full of nature-inspired decorations in the Visitor Center. Seasonal carillon music can be heard ringing out as you journey through the Gardens on your way to the Holiday Home Tour at Pinewood Estate, where a wonderland of decorations adorns the historic home.

Now in its 19th year, the Holiday Home Tour is decorated differently each Christmas, and this years Celebrating Traditions theme guided the design process. Room designers have selected dcor ranging from old, authentic ornaments to historic themes about the homes original owners, to various holiday traditions celebrated by their own families. Every room will spark new, creative ideas you can use in your own homes holiday design.

You can also enjoy the sounds of the season with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Singing Tower carillon as they perform together Dec. 7 during a special holiday edition of one of Central Floridas favorite outdoor concerts. Families and friends are encouraged to prepare themed picnics and experience a magical December evening as the sun sets atop Iron Mountain.

Visit boktowergardens.org/calendar for a complete list of events and activities celebrating Christmas at Bok Tower Gardens November 29 - January 5.

Southeastern UniversitysAnnual Christmas ConcertOne of the best performing arts events in Polk County each year, Southeastern Universitys annual Christmas Concert has become a must-attend for locals around the holidays. Combining the talent of students from the College of Communications, Languages, and the Arts with local professional talent, as well as the expertise of the SEU Music Departments Faculty, this years concert promises to be one to remember!

The program features choral and jazz music, orchestral numbers, solo works, and some interaction with the crowd in the singing of classic Christmas Carols. This year, new and exciting arrangements will be performed which have also been programmed by the Boston Pops, the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This year promises to be particularly enjoyable as the Music Department, and its faculty, continues to grow and reach new levels of excellence.

SEU Welcomes New Faculty MembersAssisting our students in preparation for the concert, and new to the ranks of the music faculty at Southeastern University this year, are Dr. Mark Belfast, Assistant Professor of Music, and Mr. Brian Blume, Instructor of Percussion.
