With the holiday season quickly approaching, marked by festive tunes and carefully knitted sweaters, it might be challenging to feelprepared for what lies ahead.

As we compiled this year’s Holiday Issue, we’re reminded that while eggnog and presents are great, it’s the spirit of giving thatmakes this season fun.

Getting caught up in the holiday festivities, The Boca Raton Garden Club hosted its annual “Holiday House” fundraiser, as seen throughsubmitted images on page 10. Featured on page 11, Congregation B’nai Israel’s Kantor Family Center for Justice and the EbenezerMissionary Baptist Church in Boca Raton came together to host the 31st annual “Feed the Hungry” event.

Continuing with the holiday spirit, Quantum House hosted the “Sugar Plum Dreams” holiday brunch inspired by Tchaikovsky’s “TheNutcracker” on page 12. And both The Lord’s Place and the City of West Palm Beach celebrated Thanksgiving with the community, captured through submitted photos on page 13.

Profiling Palm Beach-based philanthropists on page 24, we get a peek into the values of these selfless individuals and what inspiresthem to give back.

And you can join in on the spirit of giving by attending local holiday events presented in our calendar and featured stories. Anotherway to give back while shopping this season is to pick up toys for underprivileged children in Palm Beach; page 21 features a listing oflocal toy drives.

And for those of you who are making that donation list (and checking it twice), our main story on pages 32-33 features Sun SentinelChildren’s Fund charities in need of a few essentials so you can give back while giving this holiday season.

Because of your selfless acts, we’re reminded daily that all we want for the holidays is for everyone to feel the love and joy thatmakes this time of year so special (also, carb-free cookies wouldn’t hurt).

When this issue went to press, we were freshly full of gratitude, appreciating what’s really important in life. This is why we’d like totake a moment to thank you - our readers - for being loyal followers and for giving so much back to the community we call home. Oneof the best parts of our job here at Society Scene is the daily reminder of our community’s generosity; and at the end of the day, there’snothing else that could top our list.

Medical Director: Robert D. Willix, Jr. MD

Leslie, You gave me hope when no one else did! I remember walkinginto your clinic, bent over and screaming with pain, because theepidural injection I had received from my physician had only given metemporary relief. I tried so many different pain medications with noresults. In 2013 my spine was fused at 6 different levels which onlymade my pain worse. I ended up in the ER many times and the onlything that would help we was an IV of Dilaudid. But it got to a point, were the ER did not want to see me anymore, and physicians told methey could not help either. You were my last resort. Now after yourlaser treatments, I am able to walk without excruciating pain and Icannot believe the difference this has made in my life.

Thank you so much! Maureen L. Boca Raton

This season,All I want...

I fell in love with the Delray Beach Public Library when the new Library was constructed in 2006. Iwas involved in the grand opening activities and was in absolute awe of the services and programsthis new facility provides to our community - specifically our children.

The greatest gift one can give is opportunity. If you can provide people with the resources tobetter themselves and help them achieve their goals, you open doors that otherwise may not beavailable to them.

When I think of the holidays I think of all of the special creations that don’t appear any other timeof the year. The exquisite decorations, culinary delights and the special times spent with family andfriends, especially those you don’t see on a regular basis.

I set the holiday mood with music, décor and a giving heart.

My favorite thing about the holiday season in South Florida is all of the gorgeous decorations.Coming from the northeast, I feel South Floridians make an extra effort to make it look likeChristmas! Then add the ocean to the equation and it’s perfection!

This holiday season, all I want is peace and calmness. That sounds like a “pageant” answer butit’s true. There’s been so much negativity this year on a multitude of topics, it would be amazing ifeveryone could turn their attention to the blessings we’ve been given and focus on the positive.

The cause I care most about is educating children. It warms my heart because children areour future. Providing them with free resources unlocks a whole new world of books, computers, robotics, science and even a recording studio! This opens new horizons to which otherwise theywould have no exposure or learning opportunity.

CANE

I fell in love with the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium when I was inmiddle school and was able to sleep with the fish (no pun intended).

The greatest gift one can give is opportunity.

When I think of the holidays I think of friends and family.

I set the holiday mood with bad ‘80s music and a glass of red wine.

My favorite thing about the holiday season in South Florida is that I can feelmy fingers and toes when I go outside.

This holiday season, all I want is good health and happiness for all.

The cause I care most about is education. It warms my heart because itopens the doors to so many possibilities.

GOOD

I fell in love with The Dan Marino Foundation after attending graduation for the students intheir STEPS program. It was one of the most emotional and inspiring moments of my life.

The greatest gift one can give is your time and attention.

When I think of the holidays I think of growing up in Wisconsin in front of the fire withmy parents and sister Jean.

I set the holiday mood with Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Clause is Coming to Town.”

My favorite thing about the holiday season in South Florida is our totally outrageousfake Christmas tree that doesn’t die right away and I can keep lit up for 2 months!

This holiday season, all I want is for 3C’s retail customers to blow out their salesnumbers!

The cause I care most about is inspiring the young people in our community, startingwith my two favorites, Emily and Annie Duffy. It warms my heart because what elsereally matters besides our children?

DUFFY

John Duffy

SILVERS

I fell in love with the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts organization when Iattended my first live performance there. It is a magical venue.

The greatest gift one can give is to listen without judging and love unconditionally.

When I think of the holidays I think of family.

I set the holiday mood by hosting small dinner parties. Being surrounded by familyand friends during the holidays is always festive and fun.

My favorite thing about the holiday season in South Florida is the way our entirecommunity comes alive with activities, concerts and attractions. It is as if we wait allsummer for the holidays to be here.

This holiday season, all I want is for everyone to enjoy a holiday season filled withgood health and peace.

The cause I care most about is Women of Tomorrow. It warms my heart becauseI have the opportunity to mentor high school girls to have the self-confidence toachieve their full potential through education.

Dearest wishes for a happy holiday season…With holiday wishes come wish lists

We’re making the lists and we’re checking them twice. The Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund (SSCF), a McCormick Foundation Fund, isworking with the community to ensure that this season will be nice. Through the annual Holiday Giving campaign, SSCF supportsorganizations that work with the growing number of children and families in Broward and Palm Beach counties who are struggling to

make ends meet, provide a safe and loving home, or are unable to support their children’s education. To fulfill its holiday wish, the campaign hopesto raise at least $250,000 which will be matched by 50% by the McCormick Foundation. For more information and to donate, call 1-800-519-2480or visit www.sunsentinelchildrensfund.org/donate.

The Holiday Campaign is sponsored by longtime supporters JM Family Enterprises Inc., Children’s Services Council of Broward County, PublixSupermarkets and the Dennis and Lois Doyle Family Foundation. By the end of this year, thanks to the generosity of Sun Sentinel readers andsponsors, more than $500,000 will be awarded to nonprofit agencies providing a lifeline of support for those in need.

The following Palm Beach County nonprofits have received funding from SSCF but a few remaining items would round out their holiday wish lists.
