Can Art Help Medicine?George Khut at TEDxSydney
Our vision: !
for UNSW Art & Design to become a leading research centre for media artists and designers engaging in health research and innovation.
Our vision: !
To research, develop and evaluate new approaches to healthcare using digital art, design and technology
Our vision: !
UNSW Art & Design Masters Research in Health and Medicine !
Support artists and designers to undertake research in health and medicine: research methods, user research, field work, evaluation and iterative design processes.
Our vision: !
UNSW Art & Design Masters Research in Health and Medicine !
Supported through partnerships with hospital research centres, health care service providers and health tech businesses.
design-driven innovation: changing the rules of innovation by radically innovating what things mean !

the role of cultural interpreters… !
!
interpreters are: !
forward looking researchers developing unique visions about how meanings could evolve in the life-context we want to investigate

!
How does our experience of objects, artefacts and services in health and medicine influence our attitude to wellness and self-care? !Consider the implications for patient compliance with medication and rehabilitation processes.
Our vision: !
A program to support artists and designers to undertake practice-based and clinical research in health and medicine.
Problem #1: !
Research in health takes time. Research ethics applications and approval (6-8 months…), recruitment, analysis etc. !
Masters Research (2 years) PhD (3-4 years)
Proposal: !
Develop pre-defined research projects for prospective candidates to select from: !
negotiate flexible research designs, obtain ethics approvals prior to candidates commencing research.
Problem #2: !
Art & design research is often considered risky or ‘soft’ compared to regular (medical) research. !
Withdrawal of health partners and lack of buy-in can jeopardise research for art & design candidates
Proposal: !
Develop institutional investment in medium-to-longterm partnerships. !
reinforce the value of art & design research through ongoing public programs (arts in health), peer-reviewed publications and incorporation of Art & Design research - in medical humanities curriculum.
Problem #3: !
Evidence-based research is essential if we are to argue for the value of art & design approaches in health and medicine
But most practicing artists and designers lack appropriate training in medical and health research methodologies
Proposal: !
a) cross faculty enrolments for art & design candidates - in biostatistics / psychological research and evaluation methods
b) pair art & design researchers with appropriately trained medical researchers / research candidates
!
What we could offer for the Health Tech community !• User research: candidates receive training and supervision,
and do user research for partner organisations !
• Experimental studios for visualising and discussing future scenarios of use
• Opportunities for work-based research into applications for art, design in health and medicine (part-time/fulltime?)
• ARC Linkage Grants !
For research candidates !• 2-year intensive cross-disciplinary research program !
• Possibilities for ‘real world’ clinical research !
• Streamlined ethics approval process
• Publish and participate in international research conferences
• Graduate with an innovative portfolio and experience in undertaking interdisciplinary, clinical research in health and medicine !!
Thanks!!!
