Gaud special section 9. Antoni Gaud i Cornet (25 June 1852 10 June 1926) was a Spanish Catalan architect from Reus, who was the figurehead of Catalan Modernism. Gaud's works reflect his highly individual and distinctive style and are largely concentrated in Barcelona, notably his magnum opus, the Sagrada Famlia. GAUD 10. SAGRADA FAMILIA The Sagrada Familia is the world wide symbol of Barcelona. The monumental church ElTemple Expiatori de la Sagrada Famlia (Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Family) is Gaudi's most famous work and the finest example of his visionary genius. Gaudi became obsessed with the church to the point that not only did he focus all of his creative energies into it, but he set up residence in his on-site study as well. On June 7, 1926, Gaudi was hit by a street car while crossing the GranVa at Barcelona.Three days later not having regained consciousness, Gaudi died at the age of 74. Work continued on the church, however, until it was interrupted in 1936 when the crypt and Gaudi's study holding his notes and designs were burnt by Spanish CivilWar shelling. The project was resumed in 1952 using drawings and scale models as a base although the continuation of the work gave rise to much debate. From 1954 to 1976, the facade and the four towers of the Passion (Western side) were completed. 11. CASA BATLL Casa Batll is a building restored by Antoni Gaud and Josep Maria Jujol. Built in the year 1877 and remodeled in the years 19051907, Casa Batllo is located at Passeig de Grcia 43, (passeig means promenade or avenue in Catalan), part of the Illa de la Discrdia in the Eixample district of Barcelona, Catalonia. The local name for the building is Casa dels ossos (House of Bones), and indeed it does have a visceral, skeletal organic quality. It was originally designed for middle-class family and situated in a prosperous district of Barcelona. The Casa Batll is really remarkable like most of the works designed by Gaudi, only identifiable as Modernism or Art Nouveau in the broadest sense. The ground floor, in particular, is rather astonishing with tracery, irregular oval windows and flowing sculpted stone work. It seems that the goal of the designer was to avoid straight lines completely. Much of the faade is decorated with a mosaic made of broken ceramic tiles (trencads) that starts in shades of golden orange moving into greenish blues. The roof is arched and similar to the back of a dragon or dinosaur. A common theory about the building is that the rounded feature to the left of centre, terminating at the top in a turret and cross, represents the sword of Saint George (patron saint of Catalonia), which has been plunged into the back of the dragon. 12. PARC GELL The park was originally part of a commercially unsuccessful housing site, the idea of Count Eusebi Gell, after whom the park was named. It was inspired by the English garden city movement; hence the original English name Park (in catalan the name is "Parc Gell").The site was a rocky hill with little vegetation and few trees, called Muntanya Pelada (Bare Mountain). It already included a large country house called Larrard House or Muntaner de Dalt House, and was next to a neighborhood of upper class houses called La Salut (The Health). The intention was to exploit the fresh air (well away from smoky factories) and beautiful views from the site, with sixty triangular lots being provided for luxury houses. Count Eusebi Gell added to the prestige of the development by moving in 1906 to live in Larrard House. Ultimately, only two houses were built, neither designed by Gaud. One was intended to be a show house, but on being completed in 1904 was put up for sale, and as no buyers came forward, Gaud, at Gell's suggestion, bought it with his savings and moved in with his family and his father in 1906. This house, where Gaud lived from 1906 to 1926, was built by Francesc Berenguer in 1904. It contains original works by Gaud and several of his collaborators. It is now the Gaudi House Museum (Casa Museu Gaud) since 1963. In 1969 it was declared a historical artistic monument of national interest.
