BAE Systems Wins Additional M777Howitzer Order From The U.S. ArmedForces

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi -- BAE Systems hasreceived a new order from the U.S. Department ofDefense for 87 additional M777A2 155mm towedhowitzers, valued at $176 million. The order addsto the 589 M777A2 howitzers already on order forthe U.S. armed forces, of which more than 300have been delivered.

The 155mm towed howitzers purchased under thiscontract will be delivered in 2010.

“This order has been achieved as a result ofbenchmark standard teamwork between the U.S. Army,the U.S. Marine Corps, the Light Weight 155mm Office,and the BAE Systems project team, due to our strongdelivery performance and the reliability,“ said Jim Imrie,BAE Systems’ Land Systems Weapons and Vehiclesmanaging director. “The M777A2 is exceeding thecustomer’s expectations in terms of performance, andthis has helped build the case for additional orders. TheM777 is proving to be an exceptional piece of kit,praised by the artillery community for its reliability, easeof use and accuracy.”

The M777 effort is managed by the Light Weight155mm Joint Program office at Picatinny Arsenal, NewJersey. BAE Systems’ facilities at Barrow-in-Furness,UK and Hattiesburg, Mississippi, manufacture, integrateand test the guns. BAE Systems also provides support,training, maintenance and spares for the guns currently inservice all around the world.

The M777 howitzer is the world's first artillery systemto incorporate large-scale use of titanium and aluminumalloys; weighing less than 10,000 lbs (4220 kilograms) itis the world's lightest 155mm howitzer, resulting in afield gun that is half the weight of a conventional 155mmsystem. The light weight enables rapid deployment ofM777 into any theater of operation. The gun is nowbeing deployed using the new M982 Excalibur guidedammunition, developed by Raytheon and BAE Systems,which delivers a maximum range of 40km with anaccuracy of 10 meters.

M777 is currently in service with the U.S. Army andU.S. Marine Corps in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Canadaalso has 12 M777 howitzers in service, with potentialrequirements for an additional 22 howitzers. TheCanadian Royal Horse Artillery has a number of M777soperational in Afghanistan where the gun is known bylocal insurgents as the ‘Desert Dragon’.

BAE Systems Receives $7 MillionContract To Upgrade 51 Bradley TrainingSystems

ORLANDO, Florida -- BAE Systems has beenawarded a US $7 million U.S. Army contract toupgrade 34 previously fielded Bradley AdvancedTraining Systems (BATS) along with the 17 systemscurrently being manufactured.

The contract provides upgrades to the command andcontrol function, integrates the latest Bradley tacticalcode, and incorporates functionality to support the newsoldier’s manual. These upgraded devices will help trainBradley commanders and gunners, and to develop andmaintain crew coordination skills within desert, urbanand woodland terrain environments.

“These advanced training devices give our soldiersunique training for the Bradley Fighting Vehicles inurban operations,” says Mark Russell, director ofTraining Systems for BAE Systems. “Now soldiers cantrain in a safe yet very realistic environment beforemeeting the challenges of today’s battlefield.”

The award brings the total contract value for BradleyTraining Systems from the U.S. Army ProgramExecutive Office of Simulation, Training andInstrumentation to US $34.4 million.

BAE Systems will perform the pre-planned productimprovement work effort for the Bradley AdvancedTraining Systems, software and hardware upgrades at itsOrlando, Florida facility.

BAE Systems in Orlando is a full service virtual, live,and constructive training systems provider for the U.S.military and homeland security personnel. In addition tothe Bradley Training Systems, the group also developstraining for the Future Combat Systems program.

AMFJTRS is an essential element in the Tactical GlobalInformation Grid strategy to provide secure data, voice,and video to the right people, in the right place, at theright time. The initial System Development andDemonstration (SDD) contract value is $766 million.

The Lockheed Martin AMF JTRS team includes BAESystems, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, andRaytheon. CACI Awarded $26.8 Million Task OrderWith U.S. Army C4ISR On-The-MoveProduct Management Office

The Macroswiss Micro SpyRobot will be suppliedwith a soldier worn control system to provide a UGVcapability down to squad level, putting into the hands offighting units the ability to carry out close targetreconnaissance of a target pre assault and allowing thecommander and soldiers to make informed decisions, byproviding a preview of enclosed spaces (particularly inthe urban environment), which will significantly increasetheir Situational Awareness (SA).

REF’S SPYROBOT 6x6 UGVAs well as the AAEF, the U.S Army Rapid Equipping

Force (REF) has also selected Macroswiss for thedevelopment of a groundbreaking UGV called SpyRobot6x6, which is an evolution of the SpyRobot 4WD seen inELROB 2006.

This new UGV consists of 6 of the Macroswissstate-of-the-art patented flapper wheels, with all terraincapabilities and improved payload capacity. It can alsocarry up to 4 times its own weight and it’s totally footsoldier portable.

The Macroswiss SpyRobot 6x6 has been thought as akey aid for detection, recognition and identification oftargets from a distance of several hundreds of meters,using different traditional payloads such as thermo andoptic sensors as well as new generation ones.

BAE Systems Receives $132 Million U.S.Army Production Contract For MediumMine Protected Vehicles

YORK, Pennsylvania -- BAE Systems has received a$132 million production contract from the U.S.Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command for179 Medium Mine Protected Vehicles (MMPV).

In December 2007, BAE Systems was selected as theprime contractor for the MMPV program, worth up to$2.2 billion to produce up to 2,500 vehicles through2015, for Army Engineers and Explosive Ordnance

Disposal teams.Twenty-four of 179 vehicles ordered will include a

remotely controlled interrogator arm. MMPV is amulti-purpose, mine protected, 6x6 wheeled vehiclebased on BAE Systems' next generation RG33 family ofvehicles. The contract brings the total amount awarded todate to $152 million.

“MMPV provides invaluable protection to soldiers inthe field,” said Matt Riddle, vice president of WheeledVehicles Programs for BAE Systems. "As the soleproducer of MMPV, BAE Systems will work closelywith the U.S. Army to ensure these vehicles match therequirements and protect our soldiers in the field.”

Under a strategic public/private partnershipagreement, BAE Systems and the Letterkenny ArmyDepot will perform automotive and final assemblyproduction operations of the vehicles in facilities on andadjacent to the Letterkenny Army Depot facilities inPennsylvania. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in July2008 and continue through April 2009.

U.S. Army engineers will use MMPVs to conductroute and area clearance missions, command and control,mount mine clearing systems, and conduct explosivehazards reconnaissance. MMPVs will also be used byExplosive Ordnance Disposal teams.

BAE Systems has over 2,000 employees inPennsylvania, with facilities in Fayette, Jessup,Mechanicsburg and York.

UK military commanders on the ground are set tobenefit from a new system that will increase theirability to counter attacks from air threats andreduce friendly-fire incidents.

The Land Environment Air Picture Provision(LEAPP) programme - a ВЈ100m contract between theMinistry of Defence and Lockheed Martin UK INSYS -will provide ground forces with a detailed local pictureof activity in the air, allowing them to better coordinateairspace activity, leading to greater combat effectivenessand a reduced risk of 'friendly-fire' incidents.

Minister for Defence Equipment and Support,Baroness Taylor, said:

"LEAPP (Land Environment Air Picture Provision) isa new, world-class system that will give our commanderson the ground a detailed picture of activity in the airshowing the location of allies in relation to opposingforces.

"It will improve commanders' ability to plan and strikeeffectively and help prevent 'friendly-fire' incidents.Battles of the future will benefit significantly from thissystem."

The system consists of ground based sensorsconnected to vehicle or trailer mounted equipment whichcombines the incoming data to produce the air picturethat is then distributed within headquarters. Theequipment can be deployed in different configurations tomeet the requirements of a variety of military tasks.MOD's LEAPP project team leader, Steve Wyatt, said:

"We work closely with the Armed Forces and industryto deliver equipment that will give our troops the edgewhen they need it. This system will provide vitalinformation for the land air defence missile systems ourtroops operate."

The contract which has been awarded to LockheedMartin UK INSYS is expected to sustain up to 100 jobsat the contractor's facilities in Ampthill, Bedfordshireand at other sites in the UK. The LEAPP system isexpected to enter service in 2012.

Montreal -- Ultra Electronics Tactical CommunicationSystems Division (Ultra TCS) announces the award ofcontract modifications valued at more thanUS$30,000,000 through the Canadian CommercialCorporation, for the supply of its AN/GRC-245HCLOS™ radio and TRC190 V1 and V3 kits for theU.S. Army’s WIN-T Program under contact no.DAAB07-98-C-F505.

The AN/GRC-245A HCLOS™ radio is astate-of-the-art Software Defined Radio (SDR) using theSoftware Communications Architecture (SCA) openframework. The HCLOS™ radio is currently shippingwith 16Mb/s capacity but is softwareupgradeable to34Mb/s full-duplex capacity. Ultra-TCS has alreadydelivered thousands of HCLOS™ radio to NorthAmerican and International customers, many of whichare operating in the most demanding battlefieldconditions. BAE Systems Awarded $19.7 MillionContract Modification To Support 57M88A1 Medium Recovery Vehicles

ANNISTON, Alabama –- BAE Systems has beenawarded a US $19.7 million contract modificationfrom U.S. Army’s Anniston Army Depot to support,in partnership with the Depot, the reset to combatready status of 57 Army-configured M88A1 mediumrecovery vehicles.

The contract contains an additional option worth US$4.1 million to support the reset of up to 12 additionalvehicles.

The contract brings the total number of M88A1 resetssupported by BAE Systems since 2005 to 449 vehicles.When added with previous contracts, the total value ofthis effort to the company is US $191.7 million.

“Our partnership with Anniston Army Depot is a greatexample of how public private partnerships can best meetthe equipment needs of the U.S. Army, by leveraging thecapabilities, technologies and experience of both theDepot and BAE Systems” said Andy Hove, vicepresident of Combat Systems Programs for BAESystems.

Under the partnership, BAE Systems will performdisassembly, component overhaul and kitting, andAnniston Army Depot will conduct final assembly andtest of the vehicles.

The M88A1 is a fully tracked armored vehicle with amission to perform battlefield rescue and recoverymissions. It can fulfill this mission on all types of terrainand during all weather conditions.

Work on the contract will be performed at BAESystems’ Anniston, Alabama facility beginningimmediately and will continue through December 2008.

The Anniston facilities include a 450K square footforge facility that is the U.S. industrial base for combatsystems track, producing the majority of the forged trackand suspension components for the U.S. inventory oftracked vehicles. Its 196K square foot Vehicle Upgradeand Overhaul facilities currently perform upgrades,overhauls and repair work on the M113 Family and theM88A1 medium recovery vehicles in partnership withthe Anniston Army Depot.

BAE Systems employs more than 1,000 people inAlabama, with facilities in Anniston, Cordova, Genevaand Huntsville. The Geneva facility manufactures over60,000 body armor components per month, including theOuter Tactical Vest conversion kits. The Huntsvillefacility is a leader in air and missile defense, jointinteroperability, program management, quality assurance

engineering, test and evaluation, cost analysis, andbusiness process reengineering. The Cordova facilitymanufactures the155-mm Advanced Gun Systemmagazine and the Mk 57 Vertical Launching Systemscanisters for the U.S. Navy’s newest class of destroyer,the DDG 1000.

Stewart & Stevenson Tactical VehicleSystems Awarded a Contract for Trucks

Stewart & Stevenson Tactical Vehicle SystemsLimited Partnership, Sealy, Texas, was awarded onApril 3, 2008, a $6,096,214 firm-fixed pricecontract for 38 medium tactical vehicle 5-ton cargotrucks.

Work will be performed in Sealy, Texas, and isexpected to be completed by November 15, 2008.Contract funds will not expire at the end of the currentfiscal year. Two bids were solicited on August 15, 2002,and two bids were received. U.S. ArmyTACOM-Warren, Mich., is the contracting activity.

Patria Weapon Systems Oy has been merged toPatria Vehicles Oy as of 31 March 2008 and thecompany name has been changed to Patria Land &Armament Oy as of the same date. Due to thisarrangement, all Patria’s Land & ArmamentBusiness Unit’s operations are under one legalentity.

Patria Land & Armament Oy’s Business ID is thesame as Patria Vehicles Oy’s, i.e. 0986818-0. Themerger and the change of the company name do notaffect any contracts or other commitments but theirvalidity remains the same without any further action.

First Fuchs Transport Vehicle withImproved Mine and IED ProtectionHanded Over to the Troops

Within the framework of an Immediate OperationalRequirement, 21 Fuchs (fox) TPz armouredtransport vehicles are being equipped withimproved protection against mines and ImprovisedExplosive Devices (IED).

Within the framework of an Immediate OperationalRequirement, 21 Fuchs (fox) TPz armoured transportvehicles are being equipped with improved protectionagainst mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED).

On March 20, the first production vehicle fitted withthe new equipment was presented by Rheinmetall inKassel during a meeting of the steering committee of thefuture users working group. The other 20 vehicles are tobe delivered by June 2008.

The Fuchs was developed in the 1970s, initially as adedicated transport vehicle for the requirements of theGerman Federal Armed Forces. Altogether more than1,000 vehicles were ultimately procured, and a widerange of variants was developed, including NBCreconnaissance, electronic warfare, radio and commandpost, and armoured ambulance.

By continuous technical development of the vehicleand of its logistic support, the Fuchs has remained inservice alongside more recently-developed vehicledevelopments.

A previous upgrade package already improved thevehicle’s ballistic protection, ergonomics and payload ofa batch of 124 TPz Fuchs. The most recent protectiveimprovements have increased the vehicle’s potential forenhanced safety of the crews deployed in Afghanistan.

Further planned improvements under developmentinclude enhanced protection (jammer) and firepower(new weapon station).

Corps tactical radio communications withmultiband, multimission JTRS-approved Falcon III®handheld and vehicular radio systems.

The Marine Corps is acquiring the radios through thepreviously announced $2.7 billion Consolidated InterimSingle Channel Handheld Radio (CISCHR) IndefiniteDelivery, Indefinite Quantity contract awarded to Harrisby the Joint Program Executive Office for the JointTactical Radio System.

Under this contract, Harris will provide the Marineswith its multiband, multimission Falcon IIIAN/PRC-152(C), the most widely deployedJTRS-approved handheld radio, with more than 35,000fielded worldwide. In addition to SINCGARS capability,the AN/PRC-152(C) offers ultra-high frequency (UHF)ground-to-ground line-of-sight communications,close-air support, tactical satellite communications andprogrammable encryption. The Marines also areacquiring Falcon III AN/VRC-110 high-performancemultiband vehicular radio systems.

"The U.S. Marine Corps has recognized the clearbenefits of investing in Falcon III JTRS-approved,multiband software-defined radios," said George Helm,vice president and general manager, U.S. GovernmentProducts, Harris RF Communications. MINNEAPOLIS -- Alliant Techsystems, the largestsupplier of ammunition to the United Statesmilitary, has received an additional $415.6 millionin military small-caliber ammunition orders andmodernization funding for the Lake City ArmyAmmunition plant.

The contracts were awarded by the U.S. ArmySustainment Command, Rock Island, Ill.

In fiscal year 2008 ATK delivered 1.4 billion roundsof military small caliber ammunition, and expects todeliver roughly the same amount in FY09. ATK operatesthe U.S. Army's Lake City ammunition plant inIndependence, Mo., where it produces a mix of 5.56mm,7.62mm, .50-caliber and 20mm cartridges. Working inpartnership with the Army, ATK has expanded themanufacturing capacity at the facility to 1.6 billionrounds and has continued to modernize the WWII-eraplant.

Offering increased mobility, protection and agility,Jackal's 5.9 litre engine is capable of maintainingoff-road speeds of up to 80km/h and can reach a topspeed of 130km/h. The vehicle's extended range andability to operate across a variety of terrain in extremeenvironments give it a huge advantage over its WMIKpredecessor.

Major Tom Wood, part of the team that produced thevehicle, said:

Although incorporating a fully-integrated protectionsystem and reinforced armour plating, Jackal's maindefences are its mobility and agility. This makes Jackalperfectly suited to the operational terrain of southernAfghanistan, where speed and manoeuvrability areessential.

A number of the 200 vehicles procured will form partof the training fleet allowing troops to gain experiencedriving and maintaining the vehicles before they deployon operations. Army driver Warrant Officer Nick Hartleyhas completed the training:

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notifiedCongress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to theUnited Kingdom of 157 Mine Resistant AmbushProtected (MRAP) vehicles as well as associatedequipment and services.

The total value, if all options are exercised, could beas high as $125 million.

The Government of the United Kingdom has requesteda possible sale of 157 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected(MRAP) Category I 4X4 Cougar vehicles, tools and testequipment, maintenance support, contractor technicaland logistics personnel services, support equipment,spare and repair parts, and other related elements oflogistics support. The estimated cost is $125 million.

The United Kingdom is a major political andeconomic power in NATO and a key democratic partnerof the U.S. in ensuring peace and stability in this regionand around the world.

The United Kingdom requests these capabilities toprovide for the safety of its deployed troops in support ofGlobal War on Terror (GWOT) operations. This programwill ensure the United Kingdom can effectively operatein hazardous areas in a safe, survivable vehicle, andenhance the United Kingdom’s interoperability with U.S.forces.

The United Kingdom is a staunch supporter of theU.S. in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the GWOT. The

United Kingdom’s troops are deployed in support ofIRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM, whereU.S. assets currently provide this proposed capability. Byacquiring this capability, the United Kingdom will beable to provide the same level of protection for its ownforces as that provided the United States forces.

The proposed sale of this equipment and support willnot affect the basic military balance in the region. TheUnited Kingdom will have no difficulty absorbing thesevehicles into its Armed Forces.

The principal contractor will be Force ProtectionIndustries, Inc., of Ladson, South Carolina.

There are no known offset agreements proposed inconnection with this potential sale.

The proposed sale requires the continued support ofseven Field Service Representatives (FSRs), currentlyproviding in theater maintenance support for the existingMastiff vehicles. An additional eight FSRs will be addedunder UK-P-LTR, and the United Kingdom hasrequested one additional FSR under this proposed sale tosupport the additional vehicles until 31 July 2009.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defensereadiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law; itdoes not mean that the sale has been concluded.

WASHINGTON -- Defense Department employeesgot a glimpse of the automobile of the future at adisplay of robot-driven vehicles in the Pentagon’scenter courtyard.

The small four-door sedan, compact station wagon andfour sport utility vehicles in the exhibit can navigatethemselves without human drivers through a combinationof servo-devices and radar- and laser-enabled sensors,said Anthony J. Tether, director of the DefenseAdvanced Research Projects Agency.

DARPA, now 50 years old, is a Defense Departmentagency that develops new technology for military use.

“Imagine if we had convoys being driven by robots,”Tether said. Military use of autonomous vehicles wouldnullify the human impact of roadside bombs used byterrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan, he explained.

The vehicles on display at the Pentagon had vied forhonors during a DARPA-sponsored competition calledUrban Challenge that was held Nov. 3 on a closed courseat the former George Air Force Base, in Victorville,Calif. A modified 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe entered byCarnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh won first place,earning a $2 million cash award for its Tartan Racingdesign team.

A computer brain that “rides” in the back of theGeneral Motors-donated Tahoe takes the place of humanthinking to drive the truck, said “Red” Whittaker, leaderof the Tartan Racing team.

The much-modified, gasoline-powered truckincorporates a mix of radar- and laser-operated sensors to“see” where it is going, Whittaker said. Its multiplesensors collect data “and then the computer blends thoseinto a complete model of what is going on,” heexplained.

“This robot with computers is very good at seeingwhat’s occurring now and what it projects will happen inthe future,” Whittaker said.

The current leading markets for robot-operatedvehicles include farming and surface-mining operations,Whittaker noted. Yet, the automotive market could be the“blockbuster” of all potential markets for autonomousvehicles, he said. The U.S. government has long studiedthe feasibility and potential benefits of so-called“automated highways” featuring vehicles that drivethemselves, he noted.

Future use of such highways would likely reduceautomobile accidents and provide more efficient trafficmanagement, Whittaker predicted.

“The automotive industry believes in the vision ofdriving automation,” Whittaker pointed out. “And, that’sa big change from how things were a year ago.”

The company developed and readied the system inresponse to the emerging threat of disruption tooperations of GPS navigation systems. The new satellitenavigational immune receiver keeps GPS navigationoperable in the presence of radio frequency jamming.

PARSIPPANY, N.J.-- DRS Technologies, Inc.announced today that it received a $10.1 millionorder to build more than 140 additional M989A1Heavy Expanded Mobility Ammunition Trailers

(HEMATs).

The order was part of a previously awardedfixed-price, five-year Indefinite Delivery/IndefiniteQuantity (IDIQ) contract from the U.S. Army'sTank-Automotive and Armaments Command in Warren,Michigan. Work for this contract is being performed bythe company's DRS Sustainment Systems unit in WestPlains, Missouri.

The HEMATs are part of the U.S. Army's future forcetransformation and modularization into combat brigadesrather than divisions. The trailer has a heavy industrialpayload capacity to transport numerous and extremelyheavy Multiple Launch Rocket System pods, palletizedor non-palletized conventional ammunition and fuelbladders. The trailers can be operated on paved, unpavedor cross-country roads.

The DGA delivers first PVP to FrenchArmy

The French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) hasdelivered to the French Army the first 30 smallprotected vehicles (PVP). These deliveries are theresult of an initial order for 314 vehicles passed in2004.

The current conditions require external commitmentsto improve the protection of warfighters. Launched in2001, the program PVP responds to this need forall-terrain vehicles, protected air transportable andcarrying a crew of 3 to 4 men. The vehicle is available intwo versions, the "Placing" to equip the units and supportand the "Command" to the cells of command of theinfantry.

The procurement contract was notified in September2004 and provides for the supply of 933 PVP for anamount of 150 million euros. Panhard General Defense isthe project manager in charge of industrial developmentand production of vehicles on the 2 industrial sites inMarolles-Hurepoix (93) and Saint-Germain-Laval (42).

Air transportable in C130 and C160 or usinghelicopter slings, the PVP is a 4x4 vehicle topped with ashielded cell that ensures the protection of personnel,equipment and motor transport. It is equipped with aholder for the 7.62 mm machine gun. The diesel brandIVECO of 4-cylinder in-line (2.8 liters engine capacity)develops an output of 160 hp. The transmission isprovided by a gearbox 4 speed automatic.

The protection, very good for a vehicle in thiscategory, is not at the expense of the equipment of thisvehicle equipped with air conditioning, tyre fitted with a

Turkish defense industry conquers Asia

Thirty-seven defense companies from Turkey willparticipate in the 11th Defence Services AsiaExhibition and Conference (DSA 2008), whichbegan yesterday in Kuala Lumpur, where more than600 companies from 50 countries are expected toparticipate.

This year Turkish companies are expected to be thecenter of attention in Kuala Lumpur. FNSS SavunmaSistemleri (Defense Systems), one of the main Turkishcompanies at the event, has already signed armoredvehicle contracts with Malaysia during DSA 2008 at thePutra World Trade Centre.

According to the contract, FNSS will provideMalaysia with 48 Adnan armored combat vehicles, worth$72 million in total. FNSS had previously sold 211Adnan infantry fighting vehicles to Malaysia for $300million, and 65 of these vehicles will be assembled inMalaysia.

Adnans are equipped with firing ports, which allowinfantrymen to fire their weapons from within thevehicle. They also possess passive night visionequipment produced by Turkish defense contractorAselsan.

Abu Dhabi, UAE -- The Land Forces of the UnitedArab Emirates (UAE) signed a multi-million eurocontract with BAL Bauer Industries Ltd. for theprocurement of large-scale mine clearancemachines “MineWolf”.

The purchase follows extensive trials of the MineWolfin harsh desert conditions in the Gulf region in 2006, andincludes special modifications for lifting mine fragmentsburied in sandy terrain to the surface.

BAL Bauer Industries Ltd., who acts as GeneralContractor for this contract, and MineWolf Systems wereselected based on their superior technology, extensiveregional experience and military know-how. The systemswere delivered at the beginning of 2008 six month aftercontract signing and the training of the UAE personnel isbeing carried out at the present time.

It is the first army in the Middle East to procure theMineWolf.

The MineWolf is a tracked mine clearance machineimplementing an interchangeable tiller or flail system. Ithas been proven effective against anti-personnel (AP)and heavy anti-tank (AT) mines in many mine-affectedcountries including Sudan, Jordan, Bosnia-Herzegovinaand Croatia (humanitarian projects). The system iscapable of clearing up to 30,000 square metres per day.

Synthetic Demonstration DevelopsUnmanned Vehicle Command Capability

New Malden, UK -- BAE Systems has shown, for thefirst time, how multiple unmanned air and landvehicles can work under the command of a numberof battlefield commanders to deliver vitalreconnaissance and surveillance information tofront-line troops.

The demonstration showed how two unmannedground vehicles (UGVs) and two unmanned air vehicles(UAVs) can pass information between themselves andtheir command centres, while allowing control of thevehicles to be passed between different commandsystems in real time.

Andy Wright, Capability Augmentation Manager forBAE Systems, said that in battlefield situations, beingable to seamlessly pass control of unmanned vehiclesbetween different stations was vitally important. “In thiskind of operation, it’s critical that the payload – in thiscase, vital surveillance and reconnaissance information –and that the tasking of an unmanned asset is transferredquickly and effectively between commanders on thebattlefield.”

SEALY, Texas -- BAE Systems has been awarded a$6 million contract from the U.S. Army for a ForeignMilitary Sale of Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles(FMTV) destined for Jordan. This is the third orderfor Jordan in the last four years, bringing the totalvalue to over $16 million.

"BAE Systems is building the case throughout theregion that the FMTV delivers high-performancecapability backed up with outstanding reliability andlogistics support. Repeat customers help send thatmessage," said David Landecker, sales director, MiddleEast, for BAE Systems’ Medium/Heavy Vehicles.

Work on the contract will be performed in Sealy,Texas, and managed by the U.S. Army Tank-automotiveand Armaments Command (TACOM). The work isexpected to be complete by October 2008.

The FMTV is available in 18 variants with payloadsranging from 2 to 16.5 metric tons. The FMTV featurescargo hauling to include weapon systems, soldiertransport, vehicle recovery, and more. The FMTV canalso be equipped with armor to protect crew and up to asquad of soldiers in certain variants.

Lockheed Martin Completes Initial EMITesting to Enhance JLTV Design, ReduceRisk

OWEGO, NY -- Lockheed Martin has completedinitial electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing ofthe next-generation vehicle it is building for theU.S. Army’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV)competition. The tests are helping team engineersreduce risk and ensure JLTV program success byadvancing the team’s vehicle design in the earlystages of development.

“As a systems integrator, we routinely perform EMItesting early in the design process to find sources ofelectromagnetic radiation that could interfere with other

on-board electronic systems or enable enemy forces todetect the vehicle on the modern battlefield,” said LouisDeSantis, vice president and general manager of GroundVehicle Systems at Lockheed Martin Systems Integration– Owego. “Correcting any issues now through structuralredesign and relocation or shielding of key subsystems isfar less costly and time consuming than making the sameimprovements later, and will help speed development ofthis vital transport system to the war fighter.”

EMI testing was performed on the JLTV Team’sCombat Tactical Vehicle Payload Category B infantrycarrier inside an anechoic chamber at Lockheed MartinSystems Integration in Owego NY. Insulated fromoutside radio signal interference, the chamber enablestest engineers to precisely measure the emission levelsradiating from specific equipment. Systems testedincluded radio antennas, displays, engine andtransmission controllers and electrical components.Additional tests conducted on an outdoor rangecharacterized the interactions of the vehicle’s antennas,which will determine the optimum design of thecommunications suite.

The tests were performed by Lockheed Martin’sOwego-based EMI Laboratory team, which recentlygained accreditation from the National VoluntaryLaboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP). Run by theU.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute ofStandards and Technology, the NVALP verifies thattesting and calibration laboratories meet national andinternational quality and procedural requirements.

This summer, the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corpsare expected to award 27-month technology developmentcontracts to at least two industry teams. Prototype JLTVvehicles developed for the demonstration will undergo ahost of trials to military standards, including EMI testing.The services could order as many as 50,000 vehicles foroperation beginning in the mid 2010s.

In addition to its infantry carrier, Lockheed Martinalso has built a second JLTV prototype — the UtilityVehicle Light Payload Category C — designed to carrypersonnel, general cargo and ammunition. The CategoryB vehicle already has undergone more than 5,000 milesof on and off-road testing, and both vehicles willcomplete 25,000 test miles by the end of this year.

As a lightweight tactical vehicle, the JLTV programwill provide the services with a family of expeditionaryvehicles capable of on and off-road mobility, protectionfrom roadside bombs and the ability to haul a variety ofuseful payloads. As a system, the sensors andcommunications suite aboard the JLTV will tap into themilitary’s global communications network, enablingforces to coordinate operations by sharingup-to-the-minute battlefield information.

The first award, valued at $45 million, funds 2,832Loader’s Armor Gun Shields. The second award, valuedat $12 million funds Loader’s Thermal Weapon Sightsand Counter-Sniper Anti-Materiel Mounts.

Lessons learned during combat operations in Iraq ledthe Army’s project manager for the Heavy BrigadeCombat Team and General Dynamics to create TUSK.The add-on kit for M1A1- and M1A2-series tanksenhances crew survivability in urban environments andconsists of added armor protection, a mine safety seat,Abrams reactive armor tiles and a tank infantry phone.

The combination of an added gun shield and thermalweapon sight allows the tank’s loader to engage targetsfrom behind a transparent shield during limited visibilityor at night. The counter-sniper anti-materiel mountenables the gunner to precisely engage with a .50 calibermachine gun while remaining under armor protection.

General Dynamics employees will perform the workprimarily in Lima, Ohio. Work on the loader’s armor gunshields is expected to be completed by Aug. 31, 2011,and work on the loader’s thermal weapon sights andcounter-sniper anti-materiel mount is expected to becompleted by Feb. 28, 2009.

MERRIMACK, New Hampshire -- BAE Systems will

lead a team of scientists that will develop miniaturerobots to improve military situational awareness.The company signed a $38 million agreement withthe U.S. Army Research Laboratory to lead analliance of researchers and scientists from theArmy, academia and industry.

The Micro Autonomous Systems and Technology(MAST) Collaborative Technology Alliance willresearch and develop advanced robotic equipment for usein urban environments and complex terrain, such asmountains and caves. The alliance will create anautonomous, multifunctional collection of miniatureintelligence-gathering robots that can operate in placestoo inaccessible or dangerous for humans.

“Robotic platforms extend the warfighter's senses andreach, providing operational capabilities that wouldotherwise be costly, impossible, or deadly to achieve,”said Dr. Joseph Mait, MAST cooperative agreementmanager for the Army Research Laboratory. “The MASTalliance is a highly collaborative effort, with each partnerfrom government, academia, and industry playing asignificant role.”

MAST will advance fundamental science andtechnology for future robotic systems in several keyareas, including small-scale aeromechanics andambulation; propulsion; sensing, processing andcommunications; navigation and control; microdevicesand integration; platform packaging; and systemsarchitectures.

“The technologies that will be developed under MASTrepresent capabilities and techniques that will influencenearly all of the products that BAE Systems will developand produce in the future,” said Steve Scalera, MASTprogram manager for BAE Systems in Merrimack, NewHampshire. “We and our alliance partners havecommitted our brightest minds to make the MASTprogram a success.”

The Alliance has a planned duration of five years withan option to extend for an additional five years. PARSIPPANY, N.J.-- DRS Technologies, Inc.announced today that it has received an initialorder of $36.4 million on a five-year contract with aprojected minimum value of approximately $101million to produce critical subassemblies for theLong Range Advanced Scout Surveillance System(LRAS3) program.

The contract was awarded to DRS by the NetworkCentric Systems business of the Raytheon Company,McKinney, Texas, the prime contractor and finalintegrator for the LRAS3 program.

The work will be performed by DRS' Sensors &Targeting Systems unit - Optronics Division inMelbourne, Florida. Manufacturing is expected to beginimmediately.

LRAS3 is a multi-sensor infrared system enablingreal-time detection, recognition, identification andgeo-location of distant targets. Army scouts on Strykerand HMMWV platforms use this technology to conduct24-hour reconnaissance and surveillance, whileremaining outside enemy acquisition and fire ranges - avital improvement over previous generations of LRAS.

Under the contract, DRS will provide such keyLRAS3 subassemblies as Forward Looking Infrared(FLIR) systems and Integrated Optical Benches (IOBs).

Stryker is a family of eight-wheeled combatvehicles that includes 10 variants. Stryker vehicles havebeen deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom since2003. The contract being modified was initially awardedDecember 2006.

Future Looks Bright for Non-Line ofSight

The Non-Line of Sight Launch System hascompleted the first of multiple summer tests atWhite Sands Missile Range, N.M., meeting allmission requirements and proving NLOS-LS is aweapon of choice for the Army of tomorrow.

The Future Combat System Technical Field Test,conducted in February and March, was the initiation of asummer of demanding developmental and operationaltests for the Future Combat System command andcontrol network, as well as a host of FCS relatedprograms, to include Redstone Arsenal's NLOS-LS. Theefforts of the project office paid off, as NLOS-LS reapedpraise from users and evaluators alike during the test.

NLOS-LS consists of a highly deployable,platform-independent weapon system that providesnetworked, extended range, precision strike capability forcombat commanders. The NLOS-LS is capable ofunattended/unmanned operations under all weatherconditions. Armed with 15 Precision Attack Missiles, theNLOS-LS is capable of engaging a host of varied targetson the modern and future battlefield.

The two-week TFT consists of developmental testsconducted with production representative prototypes andoperated by Army Experimental Task Force Soldiers in afield environment. Under the operational control of theFCS program, the NLOS-LS participated in the TFTevent working in conjunction with Unmanned GroundSystems and FCS Network Components, as well asCurrent Force equipment. Using a "crawl, walk, run"strategy, the TFT is in the crawl phase for the FCSprogram's aggressive test schedule. Successfulcompletion of the TFT provides the entrance criteria formore complicated and demanding Force DevelopmentTest and Limited User Tests this summer.

capability of NLOS-LS to work with the current forcethrough effective employment of the system, as well asintegration into the current force's network architecture.Specifically, NLOS-LS needed to show compatibilityand interoperability with the Army's Advanced FieldArtillery Tactical Data System.

Participating in two separate operational vignettes,NLOS-LS successfully received fire missions andengaged targets from FCS and current force platforms.All exercises were conducted with actual platforms in thefield using live communication networks. NLOS-LS'successful execution of this test allows it to participate inthe upcoming Training and Doctrine Command's ForceDevelopmental Test and Evaluation event later thisspring.

The NLOS-LS is one of the Future Combat Systemprogram's 16 core systems. FCS is the Army's leadingmodernization program to develop manned andunmanned systems linked by a common network andequipped with leading-edge technology.

The NLOS-LS Project Office, led by Col. DougDever, is located at Redstone with the ProgramExecutive Office for Missiles and Space. The NLOS-LSwas developed by the NetFires Limited LiabilityCompany, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin andRaytheon.

Sagem Defense Securite records neworder for SITEL information systems, tobe deployed by the French army

French defense procurement agency DGA hasofficially placed an order with Sagem DefenseSecurite (SAFRAN Group) for an additional batch of500 SITEL information systems, to be deployed bythe French army.

Part of an overall program for the French army todeploy 4,500 systems, this latest batch brings the numberof systems ordered to date to nearly 1,000.

The SITEL system, designed for several differentvehicle types, comprises a terminal with a touch screenand digital map, and an interface for tactical radio andnavigation systems.

SITEL provides connectivity between basic units andcombat vehicles and is interoperable with the army’sother information systems, especially the one used in theFELIN* integrated equipment suite (soldiermodernization program). It allows both combat andsupport units to stock and share information on tacticalsituations, along with mission planning and specificservices for different weapon systems.

SITEL is already deployed by the 2nd Armoredbrigade and the 6th Light armored brigade.
