PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

PAGE 2 VOLUME 42, ISSUE 8 TIDAL WAVES

April is traditionally recognized as Records and Information Management (RIM) month by many organizations throughout the United States and worldwide. In order to promoted RIM month, organizations arrange a

number of activities to raise awareness of the importance of managing rec-

ords and information.

At Jefferson Lab, a fact and trivia question is published in our weekly newsletter, "Weekly Briefs," with one correct answer each week randomly selected to win a Starbucks gift card. In addition, a Records and Information Management session is scheduled to keep

lab staff apprised of records-related updates and new laws and regulations.

If your organization promotes RIM during April, what do you do? I would love to hear

from you, and share your comments about activities with our membership!

Happy RIM month!

PATRICK J. CUNNINGHAM, FAI is Senior Director, Information Govern- ance, for Motorola Solutions, Inc. His team’s responsibilities include infor- mation security policies, information risk assessments, IT SOx audits, global records management, IT data privacy, and litigation and investiga- tion support. Quincy, IL and a Master of Arts degree in Public History from Loyola University of Chicago. Pat received designation as a Fellow of ARMA International in 2009.

GENE FISHEL currently serves as Senior Assistant Attorney General and Chief of the Com- puter Crime Section in Virginia Attorney General Mark Her- ring’s Office. In this capacity he directs prosecutions of comput- er fraud, identity theft, and child exploitation cases in state courts across Virginia, and serves as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in both the Eastern and Western Dis- tricts of Virginia where he pros-

ecutes computer crime cases in federal court. He received his JD from Wake Forest University and his BA, magna cum laude, from James Madison University.

JENNIFER C. MCCLAIN is the

partment at Newport News nical Skills Development De- Shipbuilding (NNS). She is responsible for the development and execution of technical training for the salaried work- force. Her responsibilities also include overseeing the Educa- tion Assistance Program for Huntington Ingalls. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, a Master’s De- gree in Human Resource Devel-

opment from The George Washington University, and is also a graduate of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce leadership program.

Training Manager of the Tech-

From Records Management to Information Governance: This session will present a case study of the evolution of Motorola’s Records Management function to an integrated Information Governance program. This session will describe the advantages and disadvantages of such an arrangement and further describe the opportunities for extension of rec- ords management principles into newly relevant processes, including electronic discovery, data privacy, and information security.

Objectives: 1) Understand the structure of an information risk management program 2) Identify opportunities to expand and extend RIM functionality into information risk manage- ment 3) Obtain insight into the security professional’s mind- set and priorities. Speaker: Patrick Cunningham, FAI

“To Infinity... and Beyond!” The Challenge of Technolo- gy in the Information Management Arena (Keynote): Technology plays a vital role in the control of information and records in all phases of their lifecycle. As we enter the Third Millennium, the “Information Age”, technology is preva- lent in our daily lives.

The premise of this presentation is that a records and infor- mation manager must have an understanding of the role of technology in the organization and the utility of technology in the lifecycle of information.

The presentation will be a call to action -- a call to under- stand and learn where technology will lead in the coming years. The role of the records and information manager is changing, perhaps radically, and the records and information manager must break through the “cardboard ceiling” and stretch his or her abilities to understand and adequately utilize technology, or face being left behind. Speaker: Patrick Cunningham, FAI

Mirror: Mirror An interactive session focusing on commitment. Based on the Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles, its aim is to improve team commitment by clarifying for each team member the standards to be upheld in order to re- main a valued member of the team. Are you holding your- self accountable? Speaker: Jennifer McClain

Enterprise and Personal Cybersecurity Update This talk will cover trends in computer security issues and state law enforcement of those issues. It will address pertinent Virginia laws, to include database breach notifi- cation, computer trespass, and the Virginia Computer Crimes Act, and enforcement of those laws. It will also provide some tips for individuals to prevent becoming victim to perpetrators of these computer crimes. Speaker: Gene Fishel

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED RECORDS MANAGERS AND THE CRM

CREDENTIAL

The Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM), an international certifying body of and for professional records managers, began the process of issuing the CRM designation in 1975. The organization and the credential continues to be a valuable part of the Records and Information Management (RIM) community; an expanding interdisciplinary, global and diverse constituen-cy. The ICRM serves as the official certifying body for both ARMA International and the Nuclear Information and Records Management Association (NIRMA).

The CRM credential provides a strong foundation of core skills and competencies for the RIM professional. It covers everything from general management principles, all aspects of record-keeping from creation, management, control, storage and disposition, through in-depth areas of recordkeeping technologies. In addition, CRM Candidates are required to put together the subject matter knowledge they gain through preparation for the exams, by writing two business case studies that demonstrate their ability to apply and convey their knowledge to upper man-agement, clients and other constituents.

Staffed from 9am to 4:30pm EST
