NUMBER AND DISTRIBUTION OF INHABITANTS

Population of the State.---:Arizona was organized as a Territory in 1863 .and was admitted to the Union as the forty-eighth State in February, 1912. Its population on April 1, 1930, according to the Fifteenth Census, was 435,573, which represents an increase of 101,411, or 30.3 per cent, as compared with its population on January 1, 1920. The total land area of the State; as shown in Table 3, is 113,810 square miles. The average number of inhabitants per square mile in 1930 was 3.8, as compared with 2.9 in 1920.

Table 1 shows the population of Arizona from 1870, the year in which its area was first separately enumerated, to 1930, together with the increase during each decade.

Counties and minor civil divisions.-In the tables which follow (Tables 2 to 6) the population of Arizona is shown by counties, election precincts, justice precincts, school districts, cities, and towns, with some comparative figures from previous censuses.

Cities of 10,000 or more.-There are two cities in the State which had a population of 10,000 or more in 1930. Table 2 shows for these cities the population at each census for which figures are available, together with the increase or decrease during each decade. Phoenix, the capital and largest city, had a population of 48,118, which represents an increase of 19,065, or 65.6 per cent, over its population in 1920. Tucson, the second city in the State, had 32,506 inhabitants, and its increase during the past decade was 12,214, or 60.2 per cent.

NUMBER AND DISTRIBUTION 93

Minor civil divisions.-The primary divisions ofthe counties of Arizona are election precincts, justice precincts, or school districts. These precincts or districts include the secondary divisions, which are known as cities and towns. Table 4 shows the population of each county by precincts or districts, cities, and towns for the last two censuses. The population of the cities and towns is shown in italics under the population of the precincts or districts in which they are respectively situated. Where an incorporated place occupies two or more precincts or parts of precincts, the total population of the place is given in connection with the presentation for the first precinct. The population of Yuma, which includes five entire precincts, is shown in Roman type, followed by the precinct population in italic type. Mesa and Tempe towns are similarly presented.

Changes in the boundaries of precincts or districts and incorporated places between 1920 and 1930 are indicuted by footnotes on Table 4.

TABLE 4.-POPULATION OF COUNTIES BY MINOR CIVIL DIVISIONS: 1930 AND ~920

[The "precincts" shown in the table are election precincts or justice precincts; for certain counties not organized into precincts \lie figures arc presented by "districts," that is, school districts. Because of numerous changes in boundaries or precincts, no comparative figures for 1910 are given. Counties showing totals for 1920, but no other comparative figures, have been redistricted since 1920. 'I'he Indian reservations, for which figures were shown separately in 1920, have been absorbed by the precincts in which they are located]
