wotwine? Are supermarkets the 'Tinder' ofwine buying? Judging wine on more thanjust their label.

It is widely joked that Tinder is the ‘hook up’ site of the online dating world; you get to see apicture of your potential amour, a name and their distance from your immediate location followedby a snap decision – hook up or not? This can be startlingly similar to supermarket wine buying. There are a plethora of fine looking bottles in front of you but all you really have to go on is thelook of the label, the name and the price. It is a gut reaction to its appearance that leads you totaking it home for a night of unadulterated pleasure, or at least one hopes it will be unadulteratedpleasure. All too often, as with Tinder, the contents of the bottle doesn’t always add up to itspromising appearance.

Though some other dating sites, and some other forms of purchasing wine can offer moreinformation and more engagement prior to purchase, the majority of us are stuck with the Tinderof wine buying because of the convenience of picking up a bottle on the way home with ourgroceries and of being able to purchase a single bottle. We are here to take that ‘first date’disappointment out of your wine buying and make sure that the bottle you take home ticks all yourboxes. Having kissed all of the frog’s out there for you, here is our line up of handsome princes.

With the temperatures rising it seems only right that we should have a deliciously dry, lipsmacking Riesling from Germany. The Junge Rheingauer Riesling 2013, Rheingau from Lidlis a vibrantly fresh combination of peach and pure lime juice with a spicy, wet stone minerality to itadding depth and complexity. This is classic Rheingau and an absolute beauty. At £10.00 itwould have put a smile on our face, at £7.99 it is an absolute steal! Buy in store only.

Another white that turned our head was the Les Charmelles Pouilly Fume 2013 from Waitrose. This is an absolutely classic Sauvignon Blanc; beautiful concentrated lemon with a cut grassfreshness. The palate is poised and balanced with a rich mineral core, a delicate creaminess andlong fresh finish. We felt you couldn’t go far wrong for this well respected appellation at £15.00and were delighted that it was on the shelf at just £12.99. Click here to buy.

If you fancy stepping out of your comfort zone and going for something totally wacky but utterlyrewarding then we suggest you pick up a bottle of the Bolfan Primus Pinot Gris Orange Wine2012, Croatia from M&S. This is the extreme form of white wine making that is rarely found insupermarkets but very on-trend in London’s hip wine bars. It has a wonderful copper orange huefrom the oxidative handling and extended skin contact, this also gives it incredible flavours ofbitter orange, spice, quince and orange essence oil with a savoury hazelnut edge to it. Thetexture is rich and creamy though the wine is fresh, complex, dry and long. This is a wine loverswine and is fabulous with food. We thought it would be a great deal at £16.00 and thought it wellworth the money at £14.00. Click here to buy.

Our red tipple of choice has to be the stunningly elegant Asda Extra Special Yarra Valley PinotNoir 2013 from Australia. This wine has all the class and beauty one would expect from thispremium region; ripe wild strawberry and a savoury cherry pip note adding complexity to the freshperfumed palate. The vibrant fruit leads on to a lovely spicy, mineral driven finish. This wine is alltoo easy to drink and every sip can be savoured. Wines from Yarra are rarely cheap and as withthis one, great quality, as such we were happy to suggest a price tag of £18.00 and there werewhoops of joy when the price was revealed at £7.98. Yes! £7.98. Click here to buy.

If you are looking to spoil someone and want a really top class wine from a top class region than ithas to be the Antonin Rodet Gevrey-Chambertin 2007 from Burgundy. With a few years underits belt, as the best of us do, it is really coming into its own with a fabulous combination of smoked

game, spice, leather, sage and earthy savoury notes underpinned by charming cherry fruit. Thewine has the wonderful silky texture and long luxurious finish of a mature wine and it is drinkingbeautifully now. We felt it was worth £35.00 but Sainsbury’s delighted us with a price of £27.00. That really is great value for a wine of this calibre. Click here to buy.
