Welcome to this latest edition of Aquila

Since the last edition we have kept pretty busy hosting a number of events including Mike McNamaragiving a talk on the rules of racing in May, and then Nikki Boniface and Tom Phipps gave a superbpresentation, over a fundraising dinner, on their Olympic campaign for the right to represent teamGB in the Nacra 17 at Tokyo in 2020.

We held a very successful ‘Push the Boat Out’ open day on 20 May, and also commenced ourSaturday am Cadet training and Saturday pm afternoon adult training. We also have been runningthe Tuesday and Thursday evening beginners and improve training courses.

On the 17th and 18th of June we hosted theEast Sussex Coastal Federation InterclubRegatta, held in beautiful sunshine allweekend. We had decent winds on theSaturday when we had 21 boats on the coursefor a pursuit race. On the Sunday theFederation Cup attracted 51 entries althoughby mid-afternoon the slow dinghy fleetstruggled to finish, tactically playing intoPBSC’s hand and allowing us to retain theFederation Cup for the second year in a row. There were some notable performances fromDavid and Nicola Boniface in the SpitfireCatamaran, and Peter White and AndyPickering in the RS 400, Tim Humphries and Paula Bayntun in the RS200 and Roger Mcall in the 2000.Thank you to Elaine Fowler and Linda Bishop in the race box on one of the hottest days of the yearand all of you who provided safety boat support and helped to run the club generally. This was oneof the best attended Federation events in recent years and the two days of sailing interspersed by aBBQ on our balcony on a balmy Saturday night went down well with members and visitors alike.

The wind dies for the slow fleet

We have been lucky enough to secure the services of Dot as our new caterer and feedback sofar is that her food is proving very popular and well-priced. She will be at the club 10 till 2pm onSaturdays and 9 to 3 pm on Sundays. To make the catering a sustainable offering for the clubplease do come and enjoy Dot’s food and we would be grateful if members could please to helpwith clearing away dishes and plates etc onto the stainless steel trolley by the side of the galleywhen finished eating. Thank you to Tina Holttum, Elaine Fowler, and many others who havemanned the galley whilst we were in between caterers. Also if you enjoyed the delicious cakesfor sale during this period these were baked each week by Jenny Boniface and we are verygrateful to her.

We have run two RYA powerboat courses duringMay with four successful candidates. This is anaccreditation needed to be a safety boat helm atPevensey Bay SC, of which we are always short ofadequate numbers to run our sailing programme. We are very keen to run courses over the summer orin the autumn to accredit further helms. Manythanks to Gordon Bishop for running these coursesand Gordon will be pleased to hear from you if youare keen to attain your Power Boat certificate. Thecourse takes place over typically two Saturdays, witha third held in reserve in the case of bad weather. Please email [email protected] if this is

of interest. The course fee is set at £60 - members only - and a significant discount to commercialrates. The certificate is internationally recognised allowing you to hire powerboats commerciallyat home and abroad.

On this topic, as we are getting into the summer season with many people taking their holidaysI'd be grateful if you would check the club website: www.pbsc.eu/duties/ to see whether youhave any up-and-coming duties that you're not able to make. If this is the case please do [email protected] so that we can make arrangements to swap you for alternative date. Many ofyou will know Ellie Ratusniak who is our duties officer, this is a dynamic and difficult task but I'mdelighted to say that with Ellie’s hard work and effort and constant juggling we have been ableto put out safety boats each week.

Laser Masters 2/3 September

On the second and third of September weare hosting the Autumn Championshipsfor the Laser Masters (Laser sailors over35) which is one of a few races on theirannual circuit. This is an important eventfor us to run well, as it is a good source ofincome allowing us to invest in the club, and demonstrates our credentials forfuture open meetings. Gordon Bishop will

be coordinating the safety boats, Peter Wright will be the Race Officer and both will need supporteither manning the safety and committee boats or on shore helping the sailors with the winches, registration, car parking, in the galley, keeping the clubhouse spick and span etc. Please let meknow if you can help and on which dates by emailing [email protected]

December AGM and next year’s committee

We’ll be saying good bye and thank you to three or four of our long standing committee membersat the end of the year and seeking replacements for 2018. There is no great skill required to jointhe committee, it just needs a few hours a month of dedication and a willingness to roll yoursleeves up. Roles can range from administration to practical and we seek a good mix of people.Committee meetings are held on the first Friday evening of each month at 19.30 and last for acouple of hours. This club is a great community asset but to sustain its future we need to recruitpeople with fresh perspective and energy to help run it. Please email me [email protected] ifyou would like to hear more.

We are well into the season now with plenty of nice weather still to come.Welcome to all our new members. I hope you enjoy your time at Pevensey.Summer Camp is now only a few days away and Sea Week is in August. Bothof which are, for many members, highlights of the season. if you areinterested in either or both of these great weeks please join in and make themost of our great club. Information about these events can be found on thenotice boards and on our facebook page,It is really good to see so many new members sailing at the club and gettinginvolved with club activities on and off the water. Our next taster day is on the 9th of September so if any of you have friendsor family who would like to try out sailing this is an ideal opportunity to bringthem along to see what our club is all about and try sailing out forthemselves. We also offer a deal on membership at the taster day.I hope you all have a great summer and that we will see you all on the waterand enjoying our great club soon,Happy sailing

Project Kraken People living or working on and around the UK's coastline and waterways are being asked to report

suspicious or unusual activity as part of a multi-agency law enforcement campaign.

Project Kraken - a joint initiative now being delivered by the NCA, Border Force and police forces - aims toincrease public reporting and strengthen the general maritime industry's response to the threats.

Reporting channels have been simplified to make it easier for people across the country who live or work nearthe coastline and waterways, or who take part in water-based activities. They can contact either the policethrough the 101 number or Crimestoppers anonymously.

We want you to report any unusual or suspicious behaviour in these and other maritime environments. Nomatter how trivial it may seem; if it looks out of the ordinary, we want to know about it.

Whether you work in the maritime industries, are a keen sailor, or are just walking along the coast, your localknowledge and your experience of the maritime world means you are well placed to spot anything unusual.

By working together we can help to prevent terrorists and organised criminals posing a threat to yourneighbours, your pastimes, your businesses and your livelihoods.

They will exploit any opening they find.

What should you do?

If you see unusual or suspicious activity, report it to your local police on 101, or anonymously toCrimestoppers on 0800 555 111 and quote 'Kraken'.

Record as much information as you can - the smallest detail could be significant. Do not take direct actionagainst any individuals or groups.

Much more information about what to look out for is availableon the above website and is worth consulting. Ed.

Some comments from our newer members

A great day sailing , fantastic weather, lots of practice and confidence building for our RYA 2 on a Tuesdayevening, a big thank you to Keith on the safety boat for giving me lots of encouragement.

LYN BROCKLEHURST

I had a great first session at PBSC this Saturday, the wind was blowing well and, having not sailed for some con siderable years, I managed to keep my newly purchased laser from capsizing!

Whilst being a new member and not having done a great deal of tidal sailing in my youth, I’d like to thanksEllie and Fiona for helping me finish rigging my aged boat and getting on the water.

If my first session with the club is anything to go by, I’m going to enjoy sailing at Pevensey Bay. Also, I’ll belooking forward to partaking in as many racing sessions as I am able to attend!

Looking forward to meeting many of the members over the next few months and introducing my children tothe cadets, as I am sure they’ll enjoy fun times on the water whilst learning to sail.

MIKE RICHES

And lastly:

We are sorry to learn of the passing of Owen Visick, a formerClub Secretary, valued member and Lark sailor in the 1970s.
