02 Academic Multiple function Structure for Davis Park

The site sits in west Providence. The owner intended to build a temporary installation in the park for the neibourhoods and the students nearby. Totally twelve groups attended the competition with the material restriction to the 12”x3”x1” plywood and ropes. And this work has been selected for the final installation.

I was in charge of the construction of this project, in-cluding the rope knots for the connection of the differ-ent plywood parts, the material, and strength strategy.

The design concept of the theater attempts to express the co-exisitence of the exterior, interior space and virtual space, which simulate what are seen from a kaleidoscope.

Fes is the cultural and religious center of Morocco. Featured by narrow streets, rugs, copper pots, donkeys, the smell of leather, and the citizens who work in dark basements, the city exhibits a great glory of charm.

The recovery of the hidden beauty of the plaza, which has been cov-ered by the dust of history for hundreds of years, is the goal of this project. The river nowadays has been used as drain sewer. My main objective is the reappearence of the river view. With the redesign of the bridge, roads and some of buildings, there would be a new view for people to appreciate the river.

The generation of site as well as the concept of the building are both based on a scene from the film North by Northwest by Sir Alfred Hitchcock.

The scene that Cary waiting for “Clapton” in the field of nowhere moved me the most. Cary’s hope, anxiety, disappointment silently convey a true feeling of the uncertainty of life and future. People and cars run into the sight, get closer, and then leave forever. And sometimes, something unexpected would chase you away from your own view and past.
